  1. Re:Hypocrites on Gates Mocks MIT's $100 Laptop · · Score: 1
I am part of slashdot and did not make fun of this.

This is a good initiative. Even if it fails in the long run, at least they tried.

If Gates idea of helping children is to provide them with Windows licences... Good for him, but unless he wants to give a Dell with windows installed to all children in Africa and develloping nations he should probably tone down his comments.

Will this project acheive its goals? Probably not. But lets not get into details here. These people want to help and there is no measure on that!

  2. stating the obvious on eBay Wants Voice Phone Free In Five Years · · Score: 1
The is great news and confirms what everyone allready new. Five years from now most phonecalls will be free. With or without help from the nice folks at Ebay.

"In the end, the price that anyone can provide for voice transmission on the 'Net will trend toward zero,"

    Lets analyse this:

-Broadband will be free? Highly doubt that.

-As in the service your gateway provider delivers to get calls outside the network, with people actually being able to understand what the other party is saying? Doubt that will be free either.

In the end, when everything is free or approaching 0, who will Joey Average call when things do not work as advertized. There will be no support staff, since they are alledgedly enjoying a 'free' trip to planet Utopia.

  3. Re:Grumpy Old Man on Tech Geezers vs. Young Bloods · · Score: 2

Actually that is not only the case with hardware. Without wanting to start a flame war of mine is better than yours, but the number of people that know how to run eg. sendmail is getting smaller (in younger age-groups practically no one does). So there you have it, the defacto mailserver that shaped email as we know it is becoming voodoo knowledge. Only old geezers like me (age 30) know how to run it. If this is good or bad, I'll leave that open. But there you have it...

Or even better: I would hope that these devices would support IAX, so the users do not need to be network engineers to use their phone in places that employ wierd types of NAT.

  5. I just wonder if they will crack open my skull on Flash Memory with Copy Protection · · Score: 1

With all this tinkering with devices to prohibit making extra copies, I just wonder: I can hear music in perfect fidelity in my mind (after hearing a song a couple of times). I am probably making illegal copies this way. Will the recording artists or government come to splice open my skull and remove the feature from my brain? I have never worn a tinfoil hat, but any instructions on how to make one would be welcome.

By the same logic, I think that all burger restaurants should be controlled by the UK and France. It's not beacuse the US gets the advantages of the UK and French recipes that these food chains should be controlled from the US. They (UK/French) made it first. They should keep it! Sorry. Disclaimer: I am nor Brittish nor French.

  7. Re:Can I Install Asterisk On It? on Linux-Based Phone Lasts 200 Hours on Standby · · Score: 1

Actually you do need the cell phone carrier. When I'm at home/at the company I work with I'd use wifi/voip. When no Wifi is available I'd have the cell phone carrier as an alternative. Makes perfect sense to me. Motorola is making a sort of VOIP-phone, but doubt it will work with anything else but Avaya. If we just scream loud enough...

  8. Re:Can I Install Asterisk On It? on Linux-Based Phone Lasts 200 Hours on Standby · · Score: 1

More interesting would be if it supported WiFi/WiMax and had a SIP client. I'll be impressed when cell phones start supporting VOIP. Why is this taking so long...

  9. Isn't OSS, ie. source documented by default on Microsoft Wants Sit-Down With OSS Advocates · · Score: 1

This is funny, given that OSS and thus documentation about the standards used is publicly available. Want to reach out, make your sources public. If you can talk the talk, you should walk the walk... Three cheers for MS.
