There is an unbelievable amount of data there to be searched, and Google has some experience in that area. Since Google lets its employees work on anything they want to in 20% of their time, and Google is known for having very talented employees, this has the potential to become a very useful tool quite rapidly. Since it is such a new area, they could also offer extra tools, or a commercial API in order to make their money back rather quickly, while still offering a much better ROI then anything else thats out there. This is coming from someone who dabbled with research in the field a little 4 years ago in college. Things have changed since then, but less than you might expect.

I suspect I might be a bit late for most people to see this, but has anyone thought about the possible effects of this on discrimination. Fat people tend to be socially stigmatized. If a virus is a likely cause for this, then wouldn't this provide a logical reason for discrimination. For instance, if you thought kissing someone who is fat might get you fat (or fatter), would you risk it? Would you at least have second thoughts?

Not quite the same, but the small robotics company I use to work for used McMaster-Carr for a lot of the mechanical parts, as well as some of the electronics. As they say on the website, 98% of the items ordered are shipped from stock, and the majority of them are delivered (just outside of Philadelphia) within 1 day. If the orders are placed early, they may be delivered on the same day. I am fairly sure this is with basic ground shipping only. Too bad more companies aren't that efficient.
