I wouild agree with the exception that mp3s are probably more of a compliment than a supplement to CDs. Sounds grammar-nazi/ish, but there's a point to this change of words. I think it is important that everything be as accessible as possible, in as many ways as possible. And certainly no one can argue that CDs don't have their advatanges in certain situations, as well as MP3s. What the industry needs to do is draft up a standard that provides for the maximum amount of flexibility, versatility, extensibility and all that other fun stuff, managed by a NPO like W3C. The DRM crap definitely has to be doused. The quicker corporations embrace freedom of information, the quicker everyone will flourish.
patriotism/nationalism was harnessed by world leaders to insight WWI and WWII. They actually wrote about nationalism's power like it was simply another tool at their disposal.
nationalism and patriotism are FUCKED UP we're all human, if anything be proud of HUMANITY not some stupid arbitrary political/cultural borders.
I was thinking the other day, I really wish more women did interesting stuff, more interesting hobbies...
Skateboarding, BMX, DJing -- all of these are completely dominated by men. There are hardly ANY females doing these things. As for skateboarding and BMX I guess athletic/extreme/grunge is associated with male, so maybe it's social. But DJing? I always thought music was pretty neutral.
Body modification. There's hardly any female tatoo artists/piercers. Every time I hit up a studio, it's always guys running the show. OCCASSIONALLY there's a female artist. Very rare though.
Programming/web design/hacking/playing video games. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I actually consider these things to be COOL. They're cultural byproducts of the new generation that are chic. Finding girls that play the truly dope games of the past couple decades is awesome. I know this one woman who actually plays/played Xenogears, Street Fighter, Rez, Mario, Counter-Strike, Shining Force -- a generally cultured sense of good video games, and that is very much a turn on. It is very much something that leverages me respecting the things she says, her opinions.
Fencing/kendo - I have only seen two females doing kendo, ~2% of all players I've seen.
I think women need to stop buying into all of this social bullshit that they should be weak little creatures. They need to get some sense and make a concerted effort to do interesting things. Quite frankly I'm SICK of a dating pool full of women who have no interesting/similar hobbies, or expect to be coddled. I'd like to have interesting discussions about the current state of the world that show considerable insight and thought from beforehand.
Women, yes I know you are out there. I do know it. And I'm trying to find you but DAMN it is hard to find needles in the haystack, you know? To those women, keep on keepin' on and influence your fellow females. I commend ya for it.
Our populace was too stupid to vote Bush out of office the second time, and you think they'll rise up in revolution? You're delusional, what a load of horseshit.
Yeah I don't know what's up with his GW befriending at the moment.
What I've seen of him hasn't really been from his marketing dept., but interviews with him on a few different programs including The Daily Show, where he seemed like a different breed of politician.
Honestly, I don't know who to vote for anymore. It's SO confusing to sort through all of the political candidates and their voting records. I mean, look at this page for McCain's voting record: http://www.vote-smart.org/voting_category.php?can_ id=S0061103
How can I really wade through all of that info for every guy out there? Got any suggestions on how to find the ones out there who represent me as a constituent accurately? (Assuming they exist....)
I understand what you're saying, but I believe I owe it to the awesome people before myself who fought (in many senses of the word) for the freedom we have now, to keep the ball rolling.
Your methodology seems a bit selfish. It's definitely not on you to lead the revolution, but don't become a hermit./all that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing/ We need people like you to help take back this world and make it a better place. How much time and effort you spend on the cause is up to you, but I suggest it be greater than zero;)
Wow... looking at the 12 warning signs of fascism really puts a lot of disconnected fears of mine into a perspective. I'm scared:/
*crosses fingers for McCain in 2008* Oh goddddd how we need someone who will lead us in a return to logic, critical thought and questioning, true democratic process (not this divisive "with us or against us" mentality of the current political climate), etc.
His qualities totally shadow his Republican status in my mind. He's proven to appeal to rational thought MUCH more than other politicians I've seen, Democrat OR Republican.
Many people don't seem to realize that many if not most of these politicians have previously had a career in law, as a judge or lawyer, whatever. Now, lawyers tend to be... pretty particular over the particulars of inked law. Who here REALLY believes that the politicians voting on this bill aren't fully aware of the concept of loopholes and such in laws, and are consequently ignorant of the potential (and from what history tells us, likely) abuse this law will draw?
Seems to me that rather than proving himself to be a dickhead, he's expressing serious concerns over the Democrats' abilities. He's postulating that given the Democrats' current voting track record, they have shown to be very similar to the current Republican regime. If I'm not mistaken, the overwhelming majority of Democrats voted for the war in Iraq (I believe only 1 in the Senate voted against? not sure about this).
Seems like his concern is valid. Now I'm curious which logical proposition leads directly from his expressed concern to his lack of rational thought? I have to call into question your own rational process on this one.
I see the word "fascist" being thrown around a lot these days. I was under the impression that the term referred to Mussoulini's regeime in Italy during WWII, and oftentimes the Nazi regeime as well. I checked Wikipedia and it seems to confirm this.
Wouldn't a more appropriate term be "authoritarian"? It seems like the word "fascist" is just being slung to garner attention and give their words a more biting sound.
So my question to the people using this term so frequently is, do you actually know what it means? What does it mean to you? And why do you use it instead of "authoritarian" or other similar words?
Let me guess: American, right? Only an American can be this bad at science.
Obviously, peoples of all other nationalities than American do not contain one person of lesser scientific skill than this man. Please leave your ignorant and malicious generalities elsewhere.
"When she's old enough (15-16) she'll get an Inet capable computer, her own password protected chatserver for her and her classmates and friends - we'll set it up together and she'll learn some basics about setting up a Jabber Server (so will I:-) )"
You seem very well intentioned I'm sure you'll do a fine job in general of raising your daughter, but you seem a little bit naive about some of this stuff. I can only guess your point in waiting until 15-16 to give her an Internet capable computer is to shelter her from the crazy random stuff on the net, but the times are a-changin. My mom didn't raise me so much as I raised myself on the 'net, and I've seen some SICK and twisted crap out there. And so have all of my friends. But we're no worse for it, I'd argue more mature probably. I've also seen a lot of enlightening stuff out there, and if I hadn't had Internet access until 16 y/o I wouldn't have been as wordly and concious of the world around me as I am now.
My cousins are the opposite. Their parents sound very similar to you in parenting methodology. They can only access the internet for a very short time during the day. No TV. Games for 1/2 hour restricted to certain days of the week. These kids are smart, but they're freakin' naive b/c of it. And I can tell that the real world is gonna hit them real hard when they get out of the house. As much as I love them, they're just....... so freakin' naive about how the real "unfiltered" world actually works, because they were raised with that restrictive parental filter.
Not that I'm putting down what you're trying to do, just wanted to send you my 2 cents back, something to think about a bit.
That's kind of like saying you wouldn't want to produce movies today, since most of Hollywood doesn't make 'em like they used to.
Are you aware of independant films? Perhaps you should look more into indie games.

I'm glad to see that there are some open-minded meat-eaters out there. I agree that many self-righteous individuals who eat meat failt o understand that even beyond all of their moral bickering, the true point remains: producing meat is not economically viable without large government subsidies put into place and a firmly entrenched place in our cultures. It is simply cheaper to grow plants per unit of nutritional values they contain.
Now if only the public would wake up and realize the dangers of putting a gamut of chemicals into our foods that have not been tested by evolution, and may cause serious long-term ramifications. That, and genetically modified foods. I realize the benefits that added chemicals and genetically modified foods can provide, but the simple fact remains that long-term effects cannot yet positively be determined as of yet. The current conditions of our food may put us largely at risk, and in fact could be major contributing factors to current trends of certain diseases rising in occurence throughout the populace.
And yet it has : / It truly saddens me that "patriots" in our country nod their heads as the government our founding fathers envisioned is being superceded by the current administration that apparently believes the Constitution can justifiably be ignored... all in the name of security.
Benjamin Franklin must be rolling in his grave right now!

I have never laughed so hard at a series of threads on /. in my entire life...!!
new to me.

Smoking? How about a real drug like H. In the last few years of your life, why not?
Why is porno not free speech?
There is a very real cultural difference in the development of RPGs between Japanese and American game development companies, console or not.
Dreamcast attainable for $12, pirated games burned directly to CD-R, no need for modchip.

That's why you judge the animal's character before adopting it...
A random animal from the pound that seems very nice has just as much chance of maming your child as a purebreed that seems very nice.
NASA rep: "If you want to take away our space pens to replace them with pencils, you'll have to pry them from our cold, dead, hands!"
Maaaaaaan, that dude is like... totally stoned!
Yo pass it already man, you been talkin with it in your hand for like 5 minutes now, god DAMN!
Ironically, the Four Horseman have not only visited in the past 50 years, they live here. And they hold some of the most powerful seats in government.
Go figure, eh?
