My Best Buy is horrible. Every time I want something I go there, walk around, then go home and buy what I want on Newegg because it's twice as expensive at Best Buy. I'm not sure about everything, but here's some examples:
2 Gb of memory: Best Buy - Cheapest is $39 (note "Regular price: $144), Newegg - Cheapest is $16.
Not a fair fight you say? How about if we compare to Newegg's Kingston and PNY brands (the only kind my local Best Buy carries): Cheapest Kingston is $18. The only PNY is $20.
Best Buy's prices aren't even close. If this isn't enough for you, how about how Newegg will sell you 4 Gb of "Corsair Dominator" memory for $15 less than Best Buy will sell you 2 Gb? And don't even get me started on their video cards..
I doubt DRM was a big deal in this. My roommate has a Zune and the two biggest reasons he hates it are the Zune software (the only way to transfer music to your Zune), and the lock-up issue.
I'm just posting to second Moodle. It's not really part of the computer lab, but having something online like Moodle (and actually teaching the teachers how to use it) would have been incredibly helpful during junior high and high school. In my current college classes, with the few teachers who know how to use Blackboard (seriously, don't use Blackboard, Moodle is way better), it makes things a lot easier, like having the syllabus online, having a full course schedule always available, and having homework assignments available (who hasn't lost an assignment before?).
On another note, getting laptops for every classroom is a huge waste of money. My English classroom in Junior High had its own laptops, and we used them maybe twice. Tablets would be interesting, but it would take far too much effort for little if any return if you got them.
From my experience, Gnome has always had significantly less features than KDE, but every time I try KDE there's a bug in something important that makes it completely unusable. I think I'm probably in the same boat as Linus here: I really don't like Gnome, but KDE is so bad you don't have a choice.
When you market something as "capable of running Windows Vista", you don't generally mean "it'll start up eventually and if you're really patient you can use programs for it". "Capable of running Windows Vista" means, in a normal person's mind, that it runs Vista similarly to how it's shown in the ad (with Aero, not super slow,etc.).
I'd consider anything that doesn't compile to machine code to be a scripting language. I was under the impression that Java could do this. I've never actually used it though.
I can't remember the last time I got spam in my Gmail account. I vaguely remember it happening, but not recently enough that I remember it. If you're getting 2 spams a day you should seriously reconsider your email provider.
I have a customized CD for Windows XP now, but I used to just install it then turn the Firewall and annoying warnings off. It takes about 2 seconds, and it's definitely worth it for the ability to get updates (and the improved wireless tool).
More importantly, you can make your own Ubuntu that comes with any browser you want (so long as it will run). The point of this lawsuit is that OEMs have to install IE because there's no way to remove it.
Get the version that comes with IE? It seems to me that an IE-free version of Windows would be more for OEMs (and people who feel like remixing their own CDs), not for everyone.
You're close, but you get a better score if you say that you've never done anything bad in your life, and anyone who steals anything, even once, should be burned alive.
I actually took a test like this for Best Buy, and the manager said that the store policy made it so he couldn't hire me, but I could come back in a month and retake it. WTF? Because my personality will change next month, or because they realize it's pointless too?
Hah you clearly have never used a Verizon phone.
Not only can you not customize anything (except using the 3 themes it comes with), but you can't install ANY application without paying $5-15 (keep in mind these are all clones of games from the 80's with their characters replaced with people from movies), and you can't use the GPS without paying $9/mo for their crappy GPS service which doesn't integrate with other programs. Oh and did I mention that if you want to add your own programs you have to pay a couple thousand dollars?
How did they get hired in the first place? How was their performance not brought up in reviews leading to a firing for cause?
I'm not sure about how it is at Microsoft, but at the company I used to work for, every time someone got fired the company was sued, so they just kept their incompetant people on until they started losing enough money that they could "lay them off".
Yes. The point of FOSS is that one person can do it and no one else needs to do it again unless they want to make it better. This guy is looking for a solution, and the solution already exists. He would be wasting his time if he did it himself.
I dunno about all you barbarians, but I had a Saturnalia party, and trust me, wearing togas and drinking wine is way better than the boredom going on today..
I thought Newegg only did free 3-5 day shipping. It's nice, but not quite next day.

I guess you could say it's a form of DRM, but the problem is device support. The Zune software is the only program that can figure out what a Zune is.

Isn't Windows 7 coming out earlier than originally planned? I think that's pretty as non-vaporware as you can get.
I was under the impression that they are 'scripting languages' because they don't compile.

Yeah seriously. Windows not being slow is obviously flamebait.
Does it matter? If it really doesn't use power in standby, then you don't really need to turn it off..

I think Microsoft would have less people complaining about speed if they required fresh installs for upgrades.

This isn't even someone profiting from it for their entire life. It's about someone profiting from it 95 years after they die.
Sending everyone an email saying "Hey guys this is my new email. -Your Name Here" is difficult?
Could be because it's so similar to Chrome and Safari?
