Assume such a rumour is true... Folks, it's always been the job of the military -- any military -- to brainwash its troops. They train their personell to kill people, hundreds of them, and not feel guilty about it. They train them to continue doing it and to hate the enemy more than anything else in existence.
And we're up in arms about them censoring a few websites? Come on folks... give them cigs, beer, and porn. That's it. They exist to "preserve democracy (increase oil reserves), not to practice it".
There is absolutely no possibility that this was C++ or C code. VERY few compilers (actually, all i can think of is windows... which reminds me why it's so slow) actually do what you said, but every single Java VM does exactly this. And, let's not forget, C/C++ isn't "cool" for enterprise level apps like a cell phone company would have... it's totally bad Java programming.
Everyone complains about C++ programs "crashing" if you're doing silly things with memory. Why would we want to know about our problems when we can have them buried for us by just defaulting the String to "null" instead?
Poor bastard... but let's face it... he's a bit of a tool:D
Karma, blah blah... I just can't let this go. A lot of people have been saying the same thing, but seriously, is Hemos below the average intelligence level of the average, "below average intelligence level" person?
Hemos... Millions of people will see this, and already tens of thousands of people see you as a small, dim-witted monkey that just recovered from a botched lobotomy. Your first drafts are awful beyond description... At least I hope this was a first draft.
Let's all just assume that he's completely baked at the current moment. That's much preferable.
I don't care about eggthics or anything like that... i just don't want them to use any sweatshop eggs. Cage-free, Farm-fresh, baby! That's why i have my little Jerry!
I am but a poor and humble programmer. I don't have billions of dollars with which to combat the billions of dollars that are spent learning how to manipulate me. Blocking ads whenever I can is the most powerful thing I can do.
Ads take up my bandwidth and my browser real-estate.
Some of them are just plain offensive.
Some of them don't lay out properly in Firefox, thus ruining the experience of visiting the particular web site.
I don't view them to be any different from TV, billboard, magazing, newspaper, or any other ads.
I don't buy any magazines other than the C/C++ User's Journal, and even that is starting to suck. All of your "popular" magazines are so crammed full of ads, it's just disgusting. One magazine my wife brought home was geared so heavily towards advertising that they put the Table of Contents on several pages, and the first one didn't start until page 20! You had to flip through all the ads to get to the Table of Contents, and then flip through more to continue reading it... and without the Table of Contents, trying to find what you were looking for was impossible given the number of pages that were just plain ads to begin with!
I watch my TV shows by downloading them off the net, commercial free.
I block all Web Ads.
I download music and movies instead of buying them (although more and more movies are simply advertisements with a bit of story around them), mainly because it's the laziest civil disobedience I can muster. Why is it illegal to download music and movies but it is perfectly legal to stage a systematic, heavily researched, concentrated attack on my brain, manipulating me, making me stupider and poorer with no way to get around it? I would have to stop watching TV, Movies, reading papers, opening my eyes while walking along the street, listening to the radio, talking to friends or anyone else that speaks english, etc... you can't get away from it. How on earth is that legal?
The above post appears to be a simple rant. And that's what it is.
From the article:
"It is a good practice to write comments at the same time (or earlier than) you write your code."
MSDN on Using Comments Effectively
Odd that i would want to disagree with MSDN (cough) but I actually find it better to do a massive comment on a file or set of files a day or two after they've reached a milestone. This forces you to go through and ensure you understand it. It also makes it so that you're commenting from "outside" the programmer's headspace a little bit. As well... it let's you see those sections where one would normally write/* Oh Fuck */.
Microsoft is a multi-billion dollar coroporation. That corporation must increase profits at the cost of everything else (known as externalizing cost). That means that it must increase profits regardless of who gets hurt, what governments topple, or even if it means the end of the world. The documentary, "The Corporation" made a great case for this and "proved" that The Corporation (any Corporation) is a psychopath, as a result of treating it as a person (which the law does).
Some points:
The Corporation here knows that the bulk of piracy occurs in the third world.
The third world is the same world being raped by Corporations (Microsoft is not free of guilt here).
Due to the last point, the third world can barely afford computers, let alone paying craploads of money for every piece of MS software they "need". (And don't tell me that they don't need those pieces of software. The bombardment of media and the desire to have what they don't have tells them they need it. They, much like you and I, are completely powerless here.)
Assuming that this works perfectly (which we know it won't) and there is no other way to get Windows but to purchase it, these people will not purchase it.
Since they can't purchase it, MS does not make any extra money from this venture (ignoring non-third world folks, which comprise the minimum of piracy).
Quality of life in the third world, in this regard, now goes down. Even if they do purchase it, quality of life still goes down because they have to give up some other necessity to purchase it.
The Corporation here has hurt the user-base, yet again, for no real gain. This is where they could be charitable and recognize that the multi-billion dollar company can eat the "loss" (of which, we know, there is no serious value).
I swear to god that if we don't start taking Corporations down and make them accountable to human decency (and a Corporation, being a psychopath, doesn't care about its negative impact on the world), then things will keep getting sadder and sadder until we're all in the third world, save the Bill Gates' and Steve Ballmer's.
I've said this before... when companies mandate unpaid overtime (and i know there are a lot of you out there that are affected by this in one way or another), what do companies expect?
Companies show time and time again that what they care about is "who's at the office?". Not "How smart do they work?" or "How much do they get done?" but simply whether the parking lot is full after 5pm.
Goofing off during those mandatory "overtime" hours is not only a healthy "fuck you" to the establishment but also the only way to slow the burnout rate.
Ah, but what's the burnout of one more "resource" (a wonderful term that is about as slimy as "It's not personal, it's just business") when compared with a better bottom line?
While i agree that all of the silliness about bringing back old shows and making them new just sucks the bone... i have to disagree on this one. The new BSG is totally something new and innovative. The HUGE following it has would tend to agree, i think.
Yes, she's smart, and yes we can argue the merits of her certification till the end of time. My concern is that her rolemodel and hero appears to be one of the greediest and shallowest SOB's alive. Unfortunately, the entire world (it now seems) treats greed as a thing to be admired, rather than as the disease it truly is.
I am both happy for this little girl in her accomplishment and intelligence, and pity her, the path she is choosing at such a young age.
It saddens me that the media and the "western dream" is so pervasive as to cut this little girl down and to narrow her view on the world at such a young age. I hope she sees there is more out there than to be a female Bill Gates someday.
My favourite T-shirt in my collection says, "Of course I don't look busy. I did it right the first time.".
But you're totally right. I've written tons of scripts and cron jobs in the last 5 years, yet i still work 9.5 hours a day on average. Where's my raise?:)
Not to mention the recent trend (last 5 years or so) of mandatory overtime... If everyone works the equivalent of 1.5 people then employment doesn't need to go up. Profits are starting to match effort level, and that effort level will just equal burnout eventually. When that happens, employment will go back up or profits will start to go down.
"I graduated from the best university in the world! Now I'll put that prestigious degree to good use by reading slashdot all day..."
It's good to know that the best universities aren't always turning out the best grads:)

He didn't register '\0'. He registered "null". 4 characters -- all of them in the nice, normal ascii spectrum.
Everyone complains about C++ programs "crashing" if you're doing silly things with memory. Why would we want to know about our problems when we can have them buried for us by just defaulting the String to "null" instead?
Poor bastard... but let's face it... he's a bit of a tool :D
I mean, last time i looked on my favourite torrent site, it was already there.
Karma, blah blah... I just can't let this go. A lot of people have been saying the same thing, but seriously, is Hemos below the average intelligence level of the average, "below average intelligence level" person?

I think vendors just need to make things reasonably secure. :)

That thing that went whizing by your head a while back... that was "the point". Try not to miss it next time :)
Sorry, but my tinfoil hat is itching me...
Does anyone else think that the Performance Tweaking code is simply
if (g_iPerformanceTweakingRequested == 0)sleep 1;
I should do this in my code... every 6 months I can put out a perfomrance "tweak".

Ugh.
I'm betting that this procedure involved a fair amount more violence than it does today...
