the possibility of death is not how you define addiction. in that case driving and mountain climbing are addictions. you are addicted to something if you do it despite very negative consequences (like losing your job or spouse), and that doesn't have to mean the possibility of death. nor do addictions have to be passed on genetically. think of those smokers who still do it after getting a tracheotomy. i am sorry to hear what addiction has done to your life, but it not mean you now have the right to determine what an addiction is.
i manage my lab machines with ghost server. handles changing computer names and all that built in. it will even detach/attach from a domain for you. it's got a bunch of other options like scripting and stuff i haven't play with. i don't even have all the hardware identical. i've got dell optiplex gx50s, gx240s, and gx280s all using the same image with different video cards, ethernet cards, etc. one is even wireless. it's pretty simple if you know what your doing when you build the image. i simply execute a task, and all 140 of the machines r done in 20 minutes (multicast). i can even schedule it to happen off hours. i don't about kickstart, but ghost server is pretty good. but moral of the story is, you gotta know what your doing no matter what you use. microsoft stuff makes too easy to not know and end up with a crappy setup.
i wonder if jobs would have mandated that the laptops have TPM in order to install the free OSX (do any AMD chipsets have TPM?). this would raise the price of the laptops. if he would have created a version that ran on the laptop without TPM, it would be on bittorrent in no time, and installed on my dell soon thereafter.
i know you're joking, but this is probably why he is hesitant to become a lab rat. once they have made all the money they can off an aids cure, some ceo at a drug company will ask the same question.
i am probably in the minority, but not having UMS is a dealbreaker for me. i like being able to plug my player into any computer running any recent OS and not have to install software/drivers to copy music band and forth (having a standard mini-usb port is also a must). screw p2p, i've got sneakernet! i've been managing my mp3 collection since '97, i don't need the assistance of some software that takes over. i miss out on some nice playlisting features, but i retain control over my music. i also don't become dependant and married to any software. gapless is also important, but not a dealbreaker (most current popular music doesn't need this but i do need my dark side of the moon intact). again, this is probably too much work for novices. but it's nice to know there are players out there for different preferences and priorities. choice..
i have an iriver h140 and use the rockbox firmware. i rip my cds using EAC and encode with LAME 3.96.1. gapless playback is flawless. i think rockbox also supports gapless in other formats also. it also supports a few other players, though i don't have much experience with them. they r also working on an ipod port of the project for the nano and 5th gen.

what way of life are you refering to? if a consumer product can alter your "way of life", perhaps you didn't have much of a life to begin with. now the mods who modded you up can mod me down.
if i buy it, i should be able to give/sell it when i no longer want it. this reminds me of when garth brooks said he was going to boycott record stores that sell used cds. talk about greedy.
i'm assuming you are refering to the slimline maxtors. we haven't had too many problems, but i know that the campus IT group had a lots. they worked it out with dell so that dell actually proactively sent them replacement hard drives. it was a lot of work to swap it out on several hundred of computers, but they get money back for work they perform from dell because of some premier access thing ( i think it's now called warrany parts direct). have you had problems with gx280s also?
wow, i got an email yesterday from the campus IT group asking if we've been having problems with optiplex gx270s. and today in a meeting with our dell reps, they explained the problem in further detail. we've had only two of the machines suffer from it (so far) out of 15. from what they told me, it affected a relatively small number of motherboards, but their tracking isn't granular enough to be able to tell preemptively by checking the serial #. he didn't have time today, but offered to show me the exact capacitor in question later, so i can look out for the bulging/rusting look. i'll try to take a pic and post it up soon. basically it was some thermal issue and would cause the machine to randomly shut down. the gx270s (2/15) and gx280(7/150ish) motherboards have been flaky thus far, and it's pretty annoying. the optiplex line is supposed to be more reliable. i understand that they have little control of this, and it doesn't help that the gx280s were pre-orders (they were the first out with pci-express slots). but we still have about 50 gx240s from years ago that still perform like champs, the only parts we have had to change is the battery on the mobo on some. the dimension line used get the latest tech, while the optiplex was "tried and true". i guess being behind the times is a hard sell, even at the cost of a some reliability.
i can already install windows and linux on pc. how does this code further that? and "might someday?"? i think it's pretty obvious it won't install on non-apple hardware day one.
i don't understand this type of blind faith in any company. if it were a non-profit company that doesn't have share-holders or something, i could see your point. otherwise it's just fanaticism. and having more fanatics isn't really something to brag about. buddism has a lot fewer fanatics than islam, christianity, and judiasm despite having a large number of followers. does that make it a crappy religion? there have been mac fanatics since before OSX, when there was little reason to be one. the main reason still remains, the underdog "we're pursecuted"/ elitist "we're superior" mentality. it's a computer, get over it. just because you prefer one car over another doesn't mean everyone who buys the other car is lame. different stroke for different folks. now that's thinking different.
i read the heading as BART getting WiFi. i guess the term wireless is starting to become vague.
"Addiction is a compulsion to repeat a behavior regardless of its consequences"
it's the first line from here:

end spout..

site is shutdown, and then /.ed. nice. and if that's not bad enough, it will be /. again in a few days for good measure.

i was wondering where our sign went. we will be stopping by to pick it up, alex.
you must really hate FM if you don't want to even have the choice.
that applies to the majority of hard drive based mp3 players, including the ipod.

calling them bad is a bit judgemental. dumb perhaps. http://www.gopapparel.com/ProductCart/pc/viewPrd.a sp?idcategory=6&idproduct=7
we can't even order them with less than 3 years warranty here at columbia (through our premier site). plug u'r serial # below and check. i'm guess your still covered. http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx /support/my_systems_info/en/details?c=us&cs=19&l=e n&s=dhs&~ck=mn
