problem is, nothing better will work if people agree to any drm, no matter how lax. if enough people decided they won't buy drmed music, the artists would seek outlets that aren't dictated by an outdated model. drm isn't about meeting the needs of the consumer or the creator. it's about meeting the needs of all the middlemen. drm helps keep the current monopoly in place, and the current monopoly keeps the consumer and the creator as far apart as possible.
actually, unless you think everyone leases their car, your analogy just proved the author's point. you can buy a car, sell it to someone else, even let your friends borrow it. but that song you "bought" is locked down with drm.
i've been thinking about this a lot lately. back when i managed about 70 computers, i put people first. now that i manage about 260, i put computers first. it has a lot to do with what resources you have. it's easier to manage computers than it is to manage people's needs/wants/preferences.
why are they singling out samsung? there are quite a few models made by quite a few manfacturers that are unlockable via codes. are they trying to scare the industry into making sure that such work-arounds are not going to be in future hardware like blu-ray and hd-dvd?
we are considering a laptop requirement at the school i work at. our student population is over 90% female (social work) and many have trouble lugging around a laptop along with books, water, cell phone, etc. this is aggravated by the fact that most students don't have much to spend and try to get the fastest machine they can afford. this usually means something heavy too. another consideration is the fact that even if they all have wireless and you have solid wifi coverage, they will need power. if they will be in class, you will want power at every seat, which will cost a lot to do. you will also need to figure out a decent printing solution. what happens when the student forgets their laptop, or it's broken? i think the trend towards laptops will increase, but you can't do away with labs just yet. i am advocating recommending laptops, and as more students use laptops, we reduce the number of computers in the lab.
the bible doesn't exactly show god as being tolerant of homosexuality either. and are you trying to say only muslims are gay bashers? you think the christian right are big supports of gays adopting? the torah allows charging of interest (usury) on non jews, but not jews. face it, most religions are full of hate and discrimination, not just islam.
umm, yeah, it is the same god. christianity tweaked judiasm and added another messenger, and islam did the same to christianity. you may not like islam, but there is no need to distance it from other religions with lies.
actually, it is the same god. if the "christian god" really was three distinct beings, it wouldn't be monotheism anymore. the trinity is not saying three distinct beings, but three faces or forms of the one god. any other intepretation borders on polytheism and idolitry
they got the episode pulled. it won't be aired again or even put on the dvds. granted this isn't violent, but it is intolerance. if you want examples of violence, look no further than abortion clinics and the crusades. it's interesting that inflammatory cartoons are a free speech thing (which i support) but you can go to jail in austria for denying the holocaust happened (stupid thing to think, but not jail worthy). those in power can have the rules changed, those who are not tend to react violently.
your right about the upmixing part, but totally wrong about how pro logic works. upmixing is like what those tvs with "virtual surround" do. with pro logic, the other tracks are matrix-encoded into the two (since video tapes only had two channels). it was a neat way to fold multiple channels into two, and since hi-fi vcrs had relatively high quality audio, it worked quite well. here's more info on how pro-logic did this.

how many other mp3 players support aac? how many phones with music playing capabilities support mp3? aac is by no means an apple only format, but very few others seem to be using it.
"It seems to me that US forces already tries to avoid collateral damage"
the entire war was collateral damage. collateral damage doesn't have to be limited to the scope of bombs and bullets. prison abuses and torture of innocent civilians are collateral damage too.
propaganda is like make up. sometimes it's just flattering lighting, sometimes it a whole makeover including surgery. why not just news that includes the whole truth? if people don't believe what you say, then telling more lies isn't going to earn their trust. of course if you wanted to tell the whole truth, you'de have to stop doing things that you have to lie about. can't do that now.
you're forgetting the tv tuner. otherwise you lose all the pvr functions. that is what makes a "media center" different from a computer that can play media.
you can critize the drm without buying into it.
"it's much more difficult to make a data format unuseable" that hasn't stopped the **AA from trying..

in the process either losing more quality by reconverting and/or losing all the track data and art. thanx.

and what would jobs have marketed without woz?

better analogy is to put a sign up on your window telling google not to look in.
i wouldn't lock it down that hard, but letting high school kids do whatever they want is never a good idea.

it sure does work. how do you think the state of israel was created? btw, i doubt anyone blew themselves up to ban screen names.

after hacking cliff's datacenter, it is now mine. plus he pays my electricity bills on it. not sure why i need two print servers at home though.
considering the gp said he sold his, i would assume he owned one at some point.

err.. i'll take the price money over a better google. if you win, you can donate it to the devs.
