UPDATE
Since osOpinion's publishing of this piece, the Open Group has updated their web site to include Apple into its list of vendors that support the single Unix specification. This appears likely as a direct result to osOpinion's publishing of the report.
Good thought but incorrect. Apple was not listed as a Single UNIX® Specification vendor until after the Open Group was notified that Apple was calling MacOS X UNIX® not A/UX (which I have used on a SE/30).
The Single UNIX Specification is supported by the X/Open UNIX brand, which in turn is supported by a verification program. The X/Open brand provides the guarantee that products adhere to the relevant X/Open specification. Systems that provide the Single UNIX Specification interfaces can be X/Open UNIX branded as proof to the marketplace. The Single UNIX Specification is the programmer's reference to the portability environment provided on X/Open UNIX branded systems.
Apple is listed as a Single UNIX® Specification vendor therefor allowed to use the trademark of UNIX®. Might not be the cold, inhuman UNIX® you are used to but the Open Group allows Apple to call its lickable OS, UNIX® by being a vendor of a Single UNIX® Spec.
some of the other nice details that come w/ owning a Mac (iMovie, Office on *nix, etc)
According the Open Group (owner of the UNIX trademark), MacOS X is UNIX and not a Unix-like operating system (like Linux and BSDi). MacOS X follows the Single UNIX® Specification as set by the Open Group allowing Apple and its users to call MacOS X UNIX and not *nix. So feel free to call MacOS X for what it is, pure, certified UNIX -- just a real fruity version of it.
Oh yea, I LOVE my iPod. The best MP3 ever made for the UNIX platform.
Just take an ad out in the Sydney Morning Herald stating that every Hotel in the city will be serving free Tooheys. Or you could just have ABC run reruns of Neighbors only in Sydney -- that should scare everyone out of the city.
Mr. Love, do you think that RMS's airing of perceived dirty laundry in the Open Source movement publicly instead of resolving issues in private a positive for the cause? Or do you think that the Corporate Suits see this as another reason to stick with Microsoft because the Open Source movement behaves childishly when dealing with internal conflicts.
Mozilla is nice on MacOS X but it does not take advantage of the Quartz type smoothing like OmniWeb or Chimera. However, if you install Unsanity's haxie program called Silk, it will allow Mozilla (or IE) to use the Quartz text smoothing along with your other Carbon apps. Well worth the download and it doesn't appear to slow down the system -- which I expected. With Quartz text smoothing, MacOS X becomes the most visually appealing, web browsing platform -- which it should be.
By doing this, you are interfering with the Federal Government's Midnight Basketball program started by Bill Clinton and Al Gore.
Seriously, I would like to see kids get off their collective asses and do some physical activity outside of gang banging and skin slapping. LAN parties promote the opposite of physical activity. Now with so many kids suffering from adult diseases due to obesity and societal cost of obesity outpacing smoking, I think forced physical exercise would be better than fraggin' their classmates.
What about the MacOS 9 and MacOS X version of Internet Explorer? Generally when the press says there is an IE security issue, it doesn't effect us but I could not gleam that info from the short! Yahoo! article!
Microsoft is so good at screwing up its own OS, thank God they seem to do a good job with Mac apps (though 90% of our security problems are due to M$).This will be moot for Mac Users anyway with Chimera looking better every day (nightly build).
The communist Chinese do not have the Panama Canal nor are they bidding for Global Crossing.
So you are saying that the Communist Chinese do not have a habit of working through shell companies to obtain strategic resources? Hutchison Whampoa is the perfect example of government control since the return of Hong Kong. The only company in a communist country is the government itself. It ultimately controls the operations of the corporations as many of the board members happen to be a member of the party as well.
The major difference between Enron and Global Crossing is that the highly leveraged position of Global Crossing is well known.
That should make the shareholders of Global Crossing feel much better now that you cleared that up. Its the #3 vs #4 biggest bankruptcy in the US. I think the fourth largest bankruptcy in the US is a big deal, even the K-Mart bankruptcy got more press and it was "minor" in comparison.
When I worked for Fifth Generation Systems (Fastback, Direct Access & Suitcase), the person in charge of producing manuals used to do this on purpose to "F" with management because they never read the manuals or even knew what the products really did. I guess this is why the company was sold to Symantec for a bargain basement price.
Thanks for the info! I wonder which the Navy finds more important, a spy sub or a carrier? I am glad both got a ship named after them. I just thought you had to be dead before the Government named something after you.
Now, I wonder what piece of military hardware that Clinton will get named after him...
Jimmy Carter is one of the reasons our nuclear subs are such powerful foes. He made the main contribution to the nautilus class engine, the gimbled reactor. Which allows the sub's nuclear pile to maintain control even when inverted.
Previously, the ships had to keep within a tight tilt angle (20 degrees or so) or else the cooling water drained from the pile and the reactor could overheat.
Thanks for that insight. I have always respected Jimmy Carter as a human being and knew the guy was super smart. His work after office shine more on him than his 4 years running the country. It was just sad to see him being used by Castro a month ago for propaganda purposes. I think he is looking back at that trip and kicking himself for making the statement that Castro was not producing chemical/bio weapons then was prevented from visiting the factory in question by Castro after Carter had made the statement.
The problem with the Presidency is that the smartest people seem to be the people worse suited to the job. I think Douglas Adams made allusions to this in HHGTG.
since Clinton did the opposite of this... I suppose your fine with him!
Absolutely! Without Clinton, the Republicans would have never gained control over the House and Senate for the first time 50 years in 1994 -- which brought about the first balanced budget in decades. Too bad that we have lost that when the Democrats took over the Senate. As we all know, Congress holds the purse strings of the Federal Government.
Hey, Reagan's got a bunch of millitary hardware named after him, and all he had to do was triple the US national debt..
I thought it was Congress that has the power to spend money in the Government not the Executive Branch. As I remember, it was a Democratic Congress during Regan's term (except for the Senate for the first two years of his term). When the nation went into a balanced budget after 1994, there was a Republican congress in power during Clinton's second term. Interesting enough, now that the Democrats are back in power over the Senate, we stopped having a balanced budget. Maybe we should make it a law that we have Democrat Presidents and a Republican Congress to keep debt down and budgets balanced.
U.S. Navy will spend '$1 billion to retrofit its premier spy submarine, the USS Jimmy Carter' to get access to deep-sea fiber routes.
Oh jeez, I had to read the article to make sure this wasn't some sort of Simpsons joke. I know, I know, Jimmy was a Nuke Engineer on a Sub before he drove the country into double digit inflation and created the misery index while wearing a sweater. But I was shocked that he already had a military ship named after him. Anyone know what the rules are for that? Is it a military thing or a Congressional?
I thought this was interesting:
They also assert that the U.S. government is bailing out Global Crossing to prevent its undersea routes falling into foreign hands.
The Global Crossing bankruptcy is as large as Enron but the Press hasn't hyped it as much. There have been many conspiracy theories as to why. This might be the real reason and not because the DNC Nation Chairman turned $100,000 into $18 million. The press might be protecting National Security because the Government has told them to shut up over the bankruptcy. Rumor was that the communist Chinese were itching to get their hands on it just like the Panama Canal. Anyone remember how communist Chinese got that? (Well at least both entry points).
That is exactly what it should do. Instead of making rules to change Microsoft behaviour it should use the market, which is the essence of a free enterprise solution. Just as I can chose Linux over MS for reasons other than purchase price or support costs, the government can chose not to use a product becuase it will achieve societal ends. That is why Micsoft os more fearful of this than anything else. It would really work.
Do you understand Capitalism? If the Government uses its purchasing power in an artificial manner, it is behaving in the same way as a Socialist/Communist government entity dictating a command economy. If the Government starts making purchasing decisions based on some artifical "societal ends" then the Government can start dictating behavior based on its economic power. That is not the purpose of a Constitutional Republic...that is the purpose of a controlled economy. 180 degrees opposite of the desires of our Founding Fathers.
You don't seem to like free enterprise solutions to problems and would rather have the government dictate solutions as laws and subsidies.
What? What are you thinking? I am requesting that a leftist, socialist be ignored because he wants the Government to avoid a free enterprise solution and artificially pick another product to hurt a specific manufacturer. That is not a free market solution. That is a socialist solution. The last thing that goes through Nader's head is anything that deals with a free market.
Your line of thinking scares me. You want Government to start making social agendas out of software using taxpayer dollars and call it capitalism. Doesn't make sense. The US Government's last job is making social agendas -- look it up in the Constitution.
Honestly, I've seen a number of posts that went against the status quo get modded up.
You must have good eyes because I rarely see it. The problem is that most of the moderation I have seen on valid posts are using moderation as a form of attack and demeaning to the poster. I have seen numerous times when profanity, attack and general nastiness being modded up when favorite whipping boys are the target (i.e., Microsoft).
Moderation has been poor (IMHO) on Slashdot ever since they updated Slashcode. Its either software or the users -- or both.
Nader is suggesting that the power of free enterprise and the marketplace should be used instead of government edicts. It just so happens that the biggest customer of software in the United States is the U.S. federal government and Ralph Nader, as a shareholder (taxpayer), is suggesting that an organization that he has voting rights in should apply the market place to control a rogue outfit. What could be closer to free enterprise than that.
No, Ralph is not suggesting that the power of free enterprise and marketplace should be used instead of government edicts. He is saying the complete OPPOSITE. He is requesting that the US Government use its purchasing power to manipulate the marketplace by using artificial reasoning for selecting a product. The marketplace is doing the complete opposite of what Nader is requesting. If Nader really wanted what you suggested, he would shut up and not force his will upon the OMB decision making process. Its a bit different for Ralph Nader to tell the government to do something compared to you and I. He has power, we don't. The OMB couldn't give a damn about my opinion on what OS they should use even though I would kick Nader's ass up and down the street in OS and general computer knowledge as would most Slashdot readers.
This is just another attempt to slam Microsoft for not falling to the will of the far left politicos in this country as so many companies have.
I know the feeling. If I ever post something that goes against Anti-MS crowd, Nader or environmentalist scientists like Sting and Bono, the -1 Flamebait/Troll mods get thrown left and right at the post. That's the problem with Slashdot, if you disagree with "Status Quo" it described as Flamebait/Troll. So much for intellectual integrity.
Its their trademark and they license who they want to...
Got to read the entire article! :P

This is a really old debate...
Should have been:
The best MP3 player ever made for the UNIX platform
Haven't had my coffee yet...

Props to Newtown -- my favorite suburb.

Ya, right! Get rid of the 'P' from 'XP' and you got a real desktop system...

Yes, Direct Access was that "cool" DOS menu system. It could be written in Perl today in about 2 hours. :)

Cool. I hope they paint on the side of the boat Reagan's famous line, "We are bombing in 10 minutes!" That should get people's attention in port. :)
