You missed the point. It is not against the law for a company to allow a user to modify their equipment. Beyond safety regulations, the US Government cannot force a company to prevent users from modifying their equipment for other purposes. The more people support companies that allow for this, the more the market will follow.
Why would you want to buy a product from a company that has policies that make you so upset? Are you a masochist? If "International Widget Machines" says you can't hack their product for Linux with a group of your buddies online because it violates their IP, don't buy their fsckin' product! No one is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to buy it. Just say, "No!", with your pocketbook. Support companies that do allow for this activity. If this is such a huge problem, there are going to be companies out there that will cater to your desire to rip apart their products so you can port Linux/BSD/etc on them. If there is truly a market out there for this, some smart guy/gal will cash in on it.
Where are the Mac OS X drivers? I have an Radeon AIW that works great with Mac OS 9 but is just a graphics cards w/ extra chips when booted Mac OS X. ATI is supposed to be one of Apple's good buddies but refuses to support Mac OS X 100%. That's why my money is starting to go to NVIDIA.
This is an outrage! The movement of the magnetic North Pole is no doubt caused by the evil, big business policies of the US Republican Party. Their anti-magnetic stabilization agenda fueled by big time donations from "Special Interest Groups" is another reason that Congress should pass the Campaign Finance Reform bill currently pending. If we are not going to step up to the plate to protect the stability of the Earth's magnetic field, who will? President Bush? Please. We all know he hates the Earth and wants it destroyed today!!!
Join Greenpeace and save the Earth's fragile magnetic stability!!!
I run an e-mail system/network for a medium sized business. I won't discuss our policy but even users that follow the policy to the letter, they are still open to viruses, trojans, internet worms and SPAM from e-mail that I haven't developed filters protect against. If you don't know about it how can you protect? (for the most part -- I spend an hour a day tracking this garbage). I have had women in the 50s receive pornographic e-mail SPAM that I know they wouldn't have signed up to receive and got past a RBL. You do your best to filter without creating false positives but data must travel back and forth for business to flow.
These e-mail filters from outside companies might make it harder to be sued for sexual harrasment because you are showing an active pursuit of purity but it does not prevent the porno from making its way into your system 100%. You can protect the inside of your company so it doesn't go out but its hard to protect it from those people outside of your network that want to pass on the "funny, dirty picture" with one of their friends that happens to be your employees.
Web filtering is a lot easier to do and doesn't require and expensive commercial package. Squid + SquidGuard have been a perfect match for my purposes.
My solution when C-level management calls for these sort of filters is by giving them what they ask for -- all the way. After a few days, they will always want them relaxed. I always find it funny its never the grunts that are the ones abusing e-mail, its always the suits!:)
Amen! No one is ever responsible for anything at the cable company. Since most of the time, they are the only game in town, they can draw employees from the bottom of the food chain and unleash them on paying customers.
(b) cable companies limiting the content and services you can reach over their IP infrastructure
This will never happen or if it does, it won't last long. The greatest way to lose a customer is to limit their choices with your product. The second my cable company says I can't visit xyz.com over their IP network, I get a new provider and tell my friends about it. Since, I don't think my response will be unique, I doubt that sort of policy will last for the cable company.
However, I don't think this will cause a rapid rollout of IP over cable just a raising of the rates charged to customers.
Cable is a dead tech anyways ready to be thrown on the trash heap with ISDN. I am sure the future of communications for the home user will be wireless. Just look at the telephone. There are now more cell phones than POTS phones in the US.
I am personally happy that the "tech savvy-gap" is widening. It allows me to continue enjoying an easy career making good money as I am sure most Slashdotters would claim as well. I also live in the northeast so that is an additional benefit as well. Another benefit I can think of is Microsoft. I use MacOS X but hope everyone else uses Microsoft. I can't really hate Bill Gates with the same passion a lot of you guys do, his bumbling company's substandard software has paid for my lifestyle many times over. For that, I am forever grateful.
On a side note, this is the first story from Katz that I actually believe he has some insight into. The technically ignorant.
Yea, but think if it were made today! They wouldn't weigh a pound and you could stuff one of thsoe 5 gig HDs used in the iPods. Storage on the Palms is too small for me. I hate memory sticks -- to expensive.
I still want the mythical "iWalk" to go along with my iPod. The problem with these Palm OS based PDAs like the new SONY is that they are nothing more than a Ford Pinto "tricked out". Its still the same Palm Pilot I bought back in 1998 just with a new coat of paint, a new Jensen stereo and some chrome. My 6 year old Newton 2100 is still a better PDA.
Jobs please bring back the Newton! I want a PDA with the iPod HD!
I don't know about you, but I think its kind of creepy that a compiler can compile itself. How they heck did the "first compiler" come into creation if there was nothing to compile it with the first place? Roswell Aliens?
I don't want to hear one more complaint from you guys about not getting laid. You are taking a perfectly cool thing, a guitar, and nerding it up to the maximum. Shame on you!
Can't I say that I do not license turnitin.com to use my work as a test bed for their commercial service. Also how do I know that my copyrighted works are being used without fee in their service? Shouldn't I be able to charge turnitin.com for using my "document" as a reference?
Somebody is losing out on compensation here. Someone call the RIAA, MPAA or something like that...
I use MacOS X. I love Apple. I would even take a bullet for Steve. Woz that is. But if you want me to sign up for subscription service can you stop with these lame Apple stories? iWarez was bad, this is unbearable.
If you don't do better, I won't subscribe and tweak my Squid+SquidGuard config to ignore big ads Slashdot on my OS X box.
So there! Plus I haven't gotten a wedding invitation, yet!
I already have a system that blocks about 95% of the ads on the Internet on my system using Squid with SquidGuard on my MacOS X box. Not really to screw webmasters but to protect my privacy from DoubleClick, ExitForCash, HitBox and the rest. Smart webmasters should display ads locally than having them served by these piracy killing companies. Don't let the ad companies dictate to you how to run your site. If enough webmasters stand up, the ad companies have to follow or you can be smart and start your own ad company -- its a free economy you know.
If Squid+SquidGuard works here, I will send you the work around, CmdrTaco, as a wedding gift...
It's called MacOS X. No matter how many distros I have installed and tested (RedHat, Debian, Redmond and Mandrake), I would rather have my mom use MacOS X than Linux as her desktop. The Linux desktop just doesn't look "polished", they look like what they are, cobbled together apps forced to get along. There is something to be said for one company building the whole system versus a ragtag group of dedicated programmers from all over the world.
Mom will get MacOS X, my server will get Linux or if I am really nice, BSD.
I am an atheist but now I want to believe in a God for the sole purpose of praying to him/her to smite the executives of DoubleClick. Suggestions appreciated.
Well, if they'll sell me a $100 version for my x86 machine, I'll be happy to give it a try.
Why should they? Porche doesn't sell their engine for a Ford Focus why should Apple sell their OS for your x86 machine? With $4 billion in the bank, Apple is doing just fine selling their own OS for their own computers. If you want cheap and slapped together, x86 is perfect.

I blew it, Its a Rage128 AIW not a Radeon AIW. I got confused. I have both cards but the Radeon is in a Winblows box.
Wake up ATI and smell the Aqua!
Sorry about that...

Where do get replacement trackpads for i386 notebooks? I have never seen them at CompUSA...
Thanks for trolling, now move along...
