In the days of solar power and renewable resources are we really wasting THIS much energy just to make fake money? How much lazier can we get as a species? Get off your dead butts and actually EARN a living. Quit sitting around and letting everyone else do the work for you, ditch this crypto mining and use that electricity for other things that actually produce something worthwhile for society. I mean imagine how many stupid people we could sterilize with that....
I have had high speed internet since almost 1999 and I can personally say that every place that I have it and have my computer or hand held device attached to it I will not go to bed before 2 AM. But when I don't have access to that and have to read a book, or actually do chores I find myself getting ready for bed by 11 or so.
Also there is of course the simple fact that we almost always wake up and reach for the phone or computer before we even go for the coffee anymore. Kinda sad.
The frequent reloads in the attempt to be first post on a story. Ahhh the good old days. Just glad to see that we had the respect to not do this on such a unfortunate turn of events.
OMG I almost forgot about the slashdot effect. LOL, that is something that should be made into a T-shirt in memory of Roblimo. Who else is with me. As well I reach out to the new owners the PLEASE honor the memory as noted below and resurrect the being known to all us old users. In spirit both here and after, we honor you Rob
: weeps : Please watch over the open source community and help us grow and strengthen spiritually the way you did in the living world Roblime. Many pleasant memories and positive energy is going out to the family and friends.
By talking on your cell phone while driving down the freeway and cutting me off. The next driver that does this I swear I'm gonna go buy a fucking beater car and clip the rear end of their $40,000 SUV and make them go careening into the semi on my other side that they are squishing me into in my little hatchback.
Yes, you too can have a digital camera in your hand that can take pictures of the inside of your ear, while talking to your mistress on the way home from your business trip:)
WHY DO YOU NEED A FUCKING DIGITAL CAMERA IN YOUR GOD DAMN CELL PHONE?!?!?! Why do you need to have anything other than a cell phone, I don't want to be available everywhere. And I especially don't want a cell phone that has a digital camera in it. What happens when the camera portion of it breaks? now you have a regular cell phone again, or the cell phone breaks, now you have a high priced dinky little piece of shit digital camera.
Come on, there is a time when things get ridiculously lame and complicated.:sigh: I'm sure this rant will fall on deaf ears though

Start now, get shit in place so that we can make sure that ICAAN/napster/selling all our credit data/any of our data to anybody won't happen anymore.
I'm sick and fucking tired of hearing how every bit of data about my life can be sold to some fucking company who can then spam me in any way they see fit (snail mail/e-mail/WHATS NEXT???)
So, instead lets get our shit together and get some laws out there that pertain to this so the companies can't get their grubby little hands on any more of our lives. Keep coorporations out of our homes, out of our credit/phone/TV watching data!!! Hell, keep the fucking coorporations out of my head since they are heading there anyways.
I hate to say it, but in many cases these security firms notify the manufacturer (if the firms are legit) and allows the manufacturer a reasonable amount of time to fix the bug. Then after a reasonable amount of time (and no visible response from said company) the firm will release the exploit to the real world simply to get the company to fix the hole faster. Nothing is faster than bad press to get a company in gear fixing bugs and not calling them upgrades.
..... I am their IT management... that is what sucks. I got thrust into this job when the prior IT dude went AWOL and split. I had sysadmin experience on my resume before and was on good terms with the programming team so they pretty much said that I was their goto guy.
Being all new to this "company treats you right" thing I graciously accepted, thusly graciously accepting the shaft. They stuck me with low pay and told me it was because I wasn't experienced enough. Yelled at me every chance they got when I messed something up, even if I fixed it in record time when I was notified about it. Have all around made me feel like a 21 year old worthless piece of crap who doesn't know anything.
I appreciate your comment here. I am looking into finding an attorney with whom I can talk to about this subject. My plan as it stood on Friday was to simply make them sign some sort of an agreement where they would get a break on their licensing fees in turn I would complete the project on company time for them.
The good thing about this is this is a smaller company and they have never written in IP rights into their contracts. I am already at odds with them about my pay scale (not getting paid enough to take their abuse). My other problem is that I depend on this job to pay my bills and feed my computers electricity.
This product was conceived, started, shelved, restarted and shelved before I worked for this company. I recently re-started the project (3 months ago) when I was able to find time to write more code and had learned more about the product market I was producing this for. The biggest point about this post is that this product was started before my working for this company so in my opinion it should be mine. I have debated on taking the time off to work on this, but the company is a little cranky about their sysadmin taking a week off. Hell they yell at me if I am 2 minutes late being back from lunch when the other employees get back 20 minutes late with no management complaints.
Long story short I feel no company loyalty or obligation. I would quit right now if i had a small amount of money saved up, but I don't think I could find a job in the 2 weeks I would have left of my last paycheck.
Computer engineers deal with logical bits and gates: they build the I/O that computer scientists talk to, and they design things to work better and faster than before. Computer scientists (of which I am a part) deal with the same type of information, but we deal with it on a different level: we study programming language theory, algorithms, data structures and the like. How do you contain that data? How do you sort it? Etc.
Sounds like what I am dealing with except I am doing the systems work and getting no respect. My whole company seems to despise the programming team and distrusts us. The design team is perfeclty all right and never gets watched over, but if programming does ANYTHING wrong we hear about it for weeks and months.
I had/have the exact same problem. 21 years old and the IT manager for a small/medium web hosting and design firm. When the old sysadmin walked I was offered the job (at considerably less pay I might add). I was about 50% up to speed on our servers and how they needed to be maintained. Now a month later I feel 100% up to speed and am not making any mistakes anymore, not to mention increasing the productivity around the office by leaps and bounds (gotta love scripts).
But I was always treated as a child, always had someone looking over my shoulder, double checking my time sheets, yelling at me when i did do something wrong (even though the old sysadmin would do the same thing and not get in any trouble). Also I had an "Intervention" when I messed up once. I made the mistake, 10 minutes lager fixed it, the next day I had a meeting about how I should "Always double check your work" and how we are going to now "have a system of checks and balances in the IT department". So essentially now every time ANYTHING craps out on the server (even if i am at lunch) they think it is due to something I did.
I messed up once, a simple error fixed in no time, but now they seem to think of me as a pleeb. I could right now go find a job and get paid twice what I am getting now, leave them without ANY IT person (linux/sun/freeBSD boxes) and they would probably choke. But since I am 21, dropped out of college to take this job full time, and HAD long hair (down to my shoulder blades but I recently got it cut) they were/are always watching me like hawks.
Well since I cut my hair (last Sunday) they seem to be treating me better and I have a review in 2 months to get more money and accept the position officially. When that time comes you can bet I will have a job offer or two under my belt showing them what I can get paid at these other jobs. They better compensate me accordingly or I won't be around past April.
But yes I do get treated like a child even though I know what I am doing and repeatedly show that to them. They only focus on the one error I made my first week on the job. And lets be honest with ourselves here how many people have made a typo in the DNS records when you are setting up new domains. Especially when this was only my third time EVER dealing with BIND and NAMED (which I have updated to the latest versions on our servers)
