You look like the perfect person to answer my question.

Why pay for music from allofmp3? It's (sort of) legal, but the artists still don't receive anything. Which means it's like buying from the RIAA, only cheaper. Which means it's like p2p, only more expensive.

Downloading from allofmp3 is about as "moral" as just straight downloading. What's the point in paying for it?

I've always wondered what Katapult did, and when you mentioned it as being useful I decided to look it up.
It allows the user to quickly launch applications or open files by pressing Alt + space and typing the beginning of the file or application name.
I realized that's exactly the same thing I do with Alt+F2 (Run Command), except the Alt+F2 box is built-in and does more stuff. Katapult just launches applications, Run Command can open web addresses or do searches with the syntax you have defined in Konqueror. For example, to look up Katapult, I hit Alt+F2 and typed "wp: Katapult" and then I had a window with Katapult's Wikipedia entry.

So unless there's some unmentioned reason that Katapult completely owns the Run Command box, it's redundant.

Nobody has mentioned yet how fucking awesome this is. I expected you would, with your "seriously radical" subject line, but you didn't.

It's a huge tsunami of terrible nuclear fire. A gigantic shock wave of deadly radioactive plasma. Large enough and forceful enough to sustain itself across the surface of the sun, obliterating the few visible features it has. You're in awe when somebody says "the explosion would be visible from the moon" but this is unfathomably larger. It's immense enough to be an astonishingly big statistical anomaly on an object more than a million times the size of the rock we live on.

This is... like... the coolest thing that ever happened in our solar system.

In my experience running just one instance of CMD.EXE is enough to create a "high-stress condition". The Windows computers at my school constantly use 100% of the CPU if you open an MS-DOS console. (They may only be SP1, and I wouldn't know if this is fixed in later versions. I don't use Windows at home.)

Also, the absurdity of their example made me laugh. I can't imagine a situation which would require the use of 500 instanes of CMD.EXE...

  12. Re:Slashdot story with a site hosting BMP's on Seeing the Earth Almost Live · · Score: 1

First, "PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a bitmap image format that employs lossless data compression", so a PNG is always as good as the original. Absolutely no information loss, just like zipping the BMP only (usually) at a (slightly) better compression rate. On the other hand JPEG provides lossy compression, so quality inevitably decreases with JPEG (whether you observe it or not).
I know it's lossless. It's just that a JPEG provides quality good enough to be indistinguishable for most purposes from a PNG, and it achieves a much smaller filesize. Sorry for the wording, it does say what you say it says but that's not what I meant.

Second, you imply that with this kind of images no compression can be achieved.
I said nothing of the sort.

So I just downloaded the BMP and compressed it using different lossless methods. Here are the file sizes:

    [snip]

Sure, the file sizes are still an order of magnitude larger than the JPEG and this is unavoidable with loosless compression in this setting. However, they they easily reduce the size of the originals to around 60%. That means that they could store them for 50 days instead of 30 using the same space. This also means I could have waited only 3.5 minutes instead of 6 minutes for it to download.
So, why don't they just use bzips? Because most of the world (Windows, unfortunately) has no commonly installed extraction utility. Windows also currently has pretty sucky PNG support with its native viewers. TIFF has support problems too, and many utilities only offer partial support (and, LZW was patent-encumbered until just a few years ago). gzip has the same problems as bzip. BMP, however, is extremely well supported everywhere. The only problem here is the size. Most people shouldn't be using the BMP links anyways as the JPEGs are good enough for the casual browsing from Slashdot, which is what really brought the server down. I suspect that even if they had no BMPs they would not have survived.
  13. Re:Slashdot story with a site hosting BMP's on Seeing the Earth Almost Live · · Score: 1

PNG wouldn't solve anything here, it works better for simple images with lines and large areas of color (vector rasterization, GUI screenshots, etc). Using it on things like pictures just results in a large filesize with a quality no better than JPEG. Their choice of JPEGs with temporarily available BMPs was a good decision.
