Here's the point you are missing. How much would your Dad's employer pay if there were NOT a union shop accross the road? So it's all about competition and competitive bargaining in the end. And your father did not have to pay union dues to have them effectively represent him.

Excellent post... However maybe there could be some good out of this. If I could just make Excel autmatically default the cell allignment to top, and left justifified instead of the stupid MS defaults, a lot of my frustration would go away..... :)

Hah! I have exectly the opposite problem. Our 'network team' (with their CSAs who manage our Cisco routers) 'don't know how'/'are not ready' to manage the Cisco switches on the blades, so guess who gets to do it while they get some special training to be 'ready for it'? Here is the issue no one is addressing. They are not reducing the # of server images, just putting them on the same hardware. As a System Administrator, I stil have to patch the same # of systems, backup the same amount of data and system images, etc. Not only that, I have to patch the VM software and I have to handle the complexity of bringing down ALL the images in a hardware partition for some patches, firmware, hardware changes. This doesn't help me at all and involves more work! An I haven't addressed the application/business complexities of putting the wrong s/w partitions together on the same hardware partition... etc

How about your chair? I hate people messing with my chair. It takesa a while to get a comfortable leg height, etc. I also and very particular about my work area, placement of monitor, etc. A 27" dual-home monitor and a real keyboard and mouse at a desk and chair the right height for me makes me a lot more productive. Anyway, how can you release gas without complete embarassment in any open plan office?

Back in 1988, the company I worked for moved us all to a new custom built datacenter which was designed to use the waste heat from an IBM mainframe to heat the building. Only problem was... the mainframe was back ordered. We had to have floor heaters put in all our cubes until the 'big iron' arrived. Nice conccept though.

  11. Re:Missing info on Deprecating the Datacenter? · · Score: 1

What's the use of having your Datacenter 10k miles from your customers? Unless you can make the photons go FTL, you will have ~100ms network response - as long as the users are in the US/Europe. However, in a few years, there will be only executives and serfs in the West so maybe that's a good idea.
