I believe he's talking about the GE Reveal bulbs. And I'd have to agree. A few months both bulbs in my office went out, so I ran down to the store and picked up a four pack of the 100 watt Reveal bulbs (only 2.99$). Brought em home, pulled one out - saw the weird pinkish coloring (could be pink, i dunno - im colorblind), decided to give em a try anway... And I was amazed.

The colors now are crisp and clear, and the price is just pennies or so above the normal cost of a 4 pack of regular bulbs. I went out and switched most of my house over, and will never go back! I used to think the headaches I got from staring at my PC all day was eyestrain, after I put these bulbs in they went away.

Amazing what a 30 cent change in lighting does, eh?

  5. Why not IDE DVD-R's? on Affordable SCSI DVD Writers? · · Score: 4, Interesting

At work I use a Pioneer DVR-A03 IDE DVD-R. Currently the fast spec DVD-R can write is 2x. That's roughly 16x CD-ROM speed-wise (2.76mb/s write). I have no problems with it, and I write a lot of files to each DVD. In the range of 40-60,000 small files. Occasionally I've burned large multi-gig files to it to, without a problem. I've had it 4 months and only had 1 disk not burn properly. I also use my pc while its burning, and that hasnt caused a buffer under-run for me yet

Before that I had a SCSI 1x DVD-R, and it was hell to configure it, what with ASPI and what not. It would easily take me a week to set it up right, but with the A03 it was literally plug it in, install the software, start burning.

Don't dismiss IDE, it has it's advantages and with such a low data transfer, it doesnt make much sense to go SCSI for this.

  6. spindle speed doesn't mean faster access speed on Drive Speed Comparisons - 7200RPM vs. 5400RPM in RAID? · · Score: 4, Informative

That's the biggest myth out there. The faster the hard drive spins, the quicker the access time. Well, that is (for the most part) true with SCSI, it isn't with IDE. Let's take a look at 2 ATA/100 40gb drives by Seagate, shall we?

    U Series (ST340823A) 5400 RPM seek time: 8.9ms

    Barracuda (ST340824A) 7200 RPM seek time: 8.9ms

Wow, they are the same - so why should I go 7200 then? Simple. That 5400 RPM drive has a transfer rate of 376mbits/sec while the 7200RPM guy does 500mbits/sec. A good deal faster.

If your going to be moving a lot of big files, then the Barracuda is obviously the better choice. For a lot of small files, either one is fine. Or opt for a Cheetah 15k rpm SCSI drive, with a seek time of 3.9ms and 690mbits trans. rate.

But overall, the price between the 2 IDE drives is so slim as to be a no brainer, you can't go wrong with the 7200 rpm drive - whereas you could cripple yourself some with that 5400. So get the 7200.

But for our "desktop" servers, which is basically what you are describing to me, we use the Adaptec AAA-131U2 RAID controller.

It's fairly inexpensive, it does RAID0, 1, 0/1 and 5. It's single channel (all you need with 3 drives). It will take almost any EDO SIMM up to 64MB for it's cache. The only real downside is it only supports NetWare 4.11, 4.2, 5.0 SCO Unixware 7.0, and it's not hot-swappable. And the OS req. that's mainly for it's CIO Manager software, which only really alerts you when there is a failed drive. If you going to build a Win box, it's really the simplest choice.

Honestly, we have several years of use of these array controllers, never had one fail, never had one quit. In fact I've never had a problem with any of our Adaptec controllers.

Thats the frustrating part. With a dialup, if your connection slows or drops all together, you just dial back in and hope to connect to a diffrent modem. With Cable, if you lose connection, you cant do much besides unplug your modem and plug it back it. If you dont get synch badck, oh well, wait. Same goes for DSL, but I've noticed that DSL is a lot more stable then cable overall. And I think it has a lot to do with the fact that you KNOW the bandwidth of your DSL, and it's harder to overload then with cable. From what I've seen, cable companies basically add on customers till the lines drop, then get more lines. Rinse, repeat.
