  1. What is this crap? on J.J. Abrams To Direct New 'Star Trek' Film · · Score: 1

Kirk and Spock? The future of Star Trek rests on a movie that sounds completely lame and will only interest a select few Star Trek fans? It annoys me that I've waited this long for ANOTHER movie about Kirk. When can we find out what happened after the Dominion War? I'm thoroughly disgusted.

  2. Re:Off topic: what is a good star-trek to get into on What's up with Star Trek Online? · · Score: 1

I have to agree. Rick Berman took Gene Roddenberry's vision and went in the completely opposite direction. I know alot of people loved the last three or four seasons of DS9 with the Dominion War but I hated it. It was like Star Trek for people with ADD. It was all about destroying ships and killing. I know I may get lynched for this but I felt that Voyager was a much better series because it was more about exploration and meeting new species. Sometimes there were even character driven plots. They did over do the time travel thing and the last episode SUCKED, though. I hate time travel episodes because they make me think in neverending circles. Like if Janeway came back in time to help her younger self get home faster, she would be changing the time line so much that she would never go back in time in the future under the same circumstances, if at all.

A few years ago, before I had any idea what I was doing, I got this annoying virus that began a countdown to restart my computer every time I connected to the internet or went to Microsoft's website. I can't remember what it was called but apparently it caused some havoc. When I found out how easy it was to stop, I was so embarrassed. That was the first day I found out that Windows XP has a built in "firewall" that could be activated. Later that month Microsoft released an update that activated the "firewall". Thanks for the foresight, Microsoft!
Anyway, with that being said, a searchable database would not be used by the average computer user. It may help those of us who know what we're doing but I think we're in the minority. It surely wouldn't have helped me back then.

considering the rarity of ebola, what's the point of a vaccine? Who do you even give it to? From wikipedia: "Of the approximate 1,500 identified Ebola cases worldwide, over 80% of the patients have died." Maybe we should be working on a cure for fan death instead.

It could be used to help fight an outbreak. Right now the only thing we have is isolation. If we could send health workers a few dozen miles ahead of the outbreak to start innoculating people, that might stop the outbreak in its tracks. Of course, it may take a while for full immunity to take effect but I imagine even partial immunity is better than nothing.

You just have to wonder though, does it have the potential to mutate and develop new/different strands?

Yes, there are already multiple strains of the virus. Their mortality rate ranges from "might survive" to "A snowballs chance in hell" and any virus has the potential to mutate.

There have been outbreaks in the US but fortunately it's been the far less virulent Ebola-Reston strain. I really don't think Ebola is a doomsday virus (yet) but for those that get it, I don't think there are many other worse ways to die. Remember, viruses can mutate under the right circumstances. If it ever became airborne, we'd be in some trouble. Another problem is that the symptoms aren't very apparent at first. They mostly look like the flu. The bleeding doesn't come along until later.

I really don't understand why so many people, who are normally thoughtful and rational, automatically go against cloning and stem cell research. The possibilities are endless in these fields. We could help so many people.

I can understand why people are upset about embryos being aborted (kind of) but why can't we just make it so the doctor has to ask the mother before they can harvest the embryo for stem cells? In my mind, it's no different than organ donation. It may be a difficult question to ask but I'm sure many people would be willing to try to turn a negative thing into a positive. I'm sure many would be opposed to it and that's fine too. If you're truly opposed to it, then you shouldn't use any of the medical breakthroughs that science creates from stem cells but stop trying to ruin it for the rest of us. How many of us reading this right now are going to suffer from alzheimers or parkinson's or even a spinal cord injury in our lifetimes?

Cloning is another thing that I think has been villainized over the years. Obviously, in the future, I'm sure cloning could be used for evil purposes (our own government will probably be behind it) but there is also potential to help people too. Cloning can lead to other breakthroughs in genetics than could end suffering due to genetic conditions. I really wish this country would stop being so scared of science and embrace it. Unless you're signed up for auto-renew or something, why do they even need to keep that kind of information on file? "It seems like your hatred of the rich, and jealousy of the succesful has clouded your opinion of the facts of this incident. Kids shouldn't die because their parents have German cars." Being rich doesn't automatically mean you're successful. I may drive a Toyota but I'm fairly successful, but not rich yet. :-( The car doesn't make the person. Anyway, I don't hate the rich, I just dislike how their precious children do something stupid and it gets blamed on everything other than the cause of the problem (the parents, OH THE HORRORS!). When my father was teaching me how to drive, he made sure that I understood that a car can be a lethal weapon and that once I lose control of a vehicle, I could kill somebody. To this day, I've never had an accident and I've never even had a speeding ticket. Although I may have went a little far with the Ford comment, I do feel that all too often parents give their children cars that are capable of reaching great speeds and don't even bother having a discussion with them about it. I will admit that people can die in any type of car. "In fact, a 95 Escort is a lot more dangerous around 100 (or 90 or whatever the top speed) is than a Mercedes. Also, Mercedes (newer ones) have a ton more safety features than many other cars." OK, but what about the soccer mom driving her kids to practice?
