I didn't catch the humour in the Rolling Stone article. Seemed like run-of-the-mill paranoia.
That article is ridiculously one-sided. Arghh. I wont even go into it... A couple people can live quite comfortably off of a small solar panel in a temperate climate...
I'm an environmentalist, anti-Bush and all that but, the author of that RS article really does seem to have undergone some kind of liberal brainwashing!
Can anyone honestly say that you'll be able to read a CD 60 years from now to get the pictures off?
Yes. Consider that a 3.5 floppy is still easily readable. It's got to be 15 years old. The number of floppy disks that ever existed PALES in comparison to the number of CDs that are out there. You can still buy a record player because a few people still like records. Someone will make a CD drive that can read the trillions? of CDs that exist becuase the market will still be quite large. - And the only reason the market would possibly not be large is if everyone has migrated their infomation to another medium.
I think the imperfections or the speed wobbles or whatever adds to the... I dunno, I just like the sound!
They are not very portable though. And they are more easily destroyed than a CD by far.
FWIW - my compaq presario laptop definately "compresses" the sound of DVD movies. Whenever something loud happens, it automagically lowers the volume. Kinda sucks IMO but, you might dig it.
I generally agree that the home theater experience is preferable but, your post is rather slanted!
Decent home theater cost is far more than you are ever likely to pay at the theater. DVD rentals are $4 where I live and then add the cost of a widescreen HDTV and surround sound... $5 for the matinee feature is a great deal!
But, I will shell out for the convenience of the home theater.
A user has to go out and install some 3rd party media player. But why would a user do that when MS bundles their media player with the OS? This is one of the many advantages you get when you are a monopolist. They are using their desktop monopoly to squeeze out 3rd party software.
Its the 3rd parties that are screwed initially. Eventually, users will be left with only one real choice for media players since MS has killed the market
Preventing forest fires in the U.S. over the last 70 years has had a negative impact on the environment.
Fires are a natural part of the environmental cycle. They create habitat for animals with large antlers (such as moose) because moose otherwise could not get through thick underbrush.
Certain types of trees require that the underbrush be burned away so that they can grow with enough sunlight too.
Praries are another habitat that require occasional fires to prevent them from becoming forests.
If you stop the natural process of fires in Australia, there will be a significant change to the land (obviously).
Well there you go. $1.1k for a TV + $300 for a console = $1.4k. No way you will get a comparable PC setup for that cost that will match the performance.
BTW, the resolution you listed for the Syntax Olevia is just one of the resolutions supported for the VGA input. There are higher. I have tested them. They are listed in the manual if you wish to see them. It is available for download from the manufacturer web site.
I have no idea what the true resolution of my TVs 1080i input is but, the component input resolution is plenty high for me. I have never owned a PC capable of smoothly rendering a recent game at higher than 1280 x 720 (I bet my geForce 4200 could play the original Half-Life at a high resolution but... who cares).
Anyway 800 x 600 seems to have always been the sweet spot for me. And if a console can give me that cheaply, I'll get one.
What are you smoking?
I paid around $1500.00 for a 30" Syntax Olevia like 6 months ago and it does 1080i.
I'll sell it to you for only $2500.00 though!
yeah you have to set up something better than a coffee table. On my current windows gaming PC I have to stick a piece of wood in the drawer to support the joystick (to fly heli's in Desert Combat). Ironically - it is the same piece of wood I use to put the kdb and mouse when I use the linux box which is hooked up to my HDTV in the living room.
With a PS3, it gets hooked up to the HDTV and the linux box goes back on the desk where my Windows gaming machine is now.
hear, hear!
Everyone seems to be missing this simple point.
Spend $300 for a console
or:
Spend $800 for a new CPU, MB, faster RAM, GPU, Windows OS, etc... Screw that!
I run Linux. There are very few games that run on it, so, I dont use it for games. I use a Windows PC for games. But that's all I use it for so, I will be switching to the PS3 platform for gaming. It is more cost effective than constantly buying hardware to support Windows.
Plus, the games that get ported to Windows will continue to shrink to the point where Windows gaming will resemble Linux gaming. There are games but, you can't use it for your primary gaming platform.
I am sure FPS games for PS3 will allow keyboard and mouse input via the USB ports.
Sorry to be a grammer(sp?) nazi but you were looking for the word "too" in the sentence:
"So don't give to much credibility into the result of polls like these in the future."
It is simple.
If you really would rather the little girl not have to die alone, go ahead and open the door - everyone can die together!
Ridiculous.
A locking door would have prevented 9-11.
You cant wipe out 150 passengers with a few knives. Some of them would rebel - as happened on one of the flights. I bet the idiot terrorists decided to "Teach them a lesson" by executing a passenger. All that did was cause them to lose control.
Monsoon wedding (which is a great movie) is NOT a typical bollywood movie and, yes, typical bollywood movies suck - big time.
Lagaan (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0282674/) is a pretty famous example of a bollywood movie. Very popular among Indians but a complete waste of 3.5 hours to anyone else.
You would have wanted to take along food, water, and oxygen to last you 20-30 years. That's a helluva lot of weight. Sure you could generate or recycle those but then you are reliant on a lot of delicate machinery with rather large power requirements.
There was no game-boy to pass the time back then either. You would almost certainly go mad within a year.

Window AC units are getting really really cheap and efficient. $100 and you are set for a small apartment.
FWIW - my compaq presario laptop definately "compresses" the sound of DVD movies. Whenever something loud happens, it automagically lowers the volume. Kinda sucks IMO but, you might dig it.

Fear of still being a virgin when they turn 30.
Sounds like someone was deflowered at 29!
Thanks for the rebuttale link but, his argument (the rebuttal) is full of holes. I dont have time to enumerate them but... just my $.02.
At right I read that as "ambling down streets and sidewalks" ... which would be about right.

Donny Darko ... I didn't like it.
It's one of those movies where you have to go to a WWW site afterwards to get the plot(s).

For example, Battlefield 2, due... soon.
