I think by "Karma-to-Burn" he was making a joke. The moderation system here lets people rate comments higher or lower based on how much they add to the conversation. Your "first post" comment probably got moderated down for that reason.
Overall, the more negative moderation you get, the lower your Slashdot karma and the less likely you are to get picked to moderate in the future. On the other hand, comments that add a lot can bump you up into a higher Slash-karmic plane.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. But don't expect people to react well to "first post" type submissions.
I had the text overlap problem myself. For me, the solution was to check for duplicate fonts in your ~/Library/Fonts folder. There were several Microsoft web core fonts (like Arial) which duplicated OS X fonts of the same name. I dragged the extra.ttf files out of the folder and both Firefox and Camino have looked great ever since.
The relevant links are 316366 and 288047. Links to bugzilla from slashdot are blocked, so you might have to copy/paste the urls.
Some part of me is almost disappointed that a couple of adolescents with an axe to grind/haven't/ yet found way to exploit the rootkit and thus come into posession of the first corporate-created zombie botnet...
So if someone actually did this and used it to DDOS Sony, would Sony be guilty of hacking their own site?
If something like this were adopted industry-wide (admittedly HIGHLY unlikely) then people would be faced with the same three choices they have today:
1)comply - fairly Big Brotherish, but probably the majority response.
2)evade - break the protection to legally or illegally watch DVDs without oversight.
3)tune out - skip the whole deal and go back to reading... or maybe TV.
I wonder how far this stuff would have to go before people would choose option 3?
According to a different article on the same study, the dinosaur mass extinction at the K-T boundary doesn't fit the pattern.
We've still got at least 10 million years before we enter the next cosmic ray cycle.
You give a gun to chimps and then wonder why someone got shot. I look at the Constitution, the 10th Amendment, etc, and wonder why the chimp is armed.
Because the chimp has Second Amendment rights, of course!

Intel, Limp Ahead -- It has a nice ring.
Anyway, thanks for a pleasant discussion.
:-)
Likewise.
Wait a second... this is Slashdot! You guys can't have a civilized discussion where you respect each others' differences! We won't stand for it!
HA! Thanks! Didn't mean to be cheeky by the way. ;)
On one hand, people will think "Gah, I don't want to buy a Mac, they don't have IE!"
When I switched over to Macs a year ago, the LAST thing going through my mind was "Do they support IE?"

Remember their press release announcing a trademark on the frowning face and that they'd be licensing it?

That's actually supposed to be Tarkin himself, played by Wayne Pygram (Scorpius) of Farscape fame. http://scifidaily.blogspot.com/2005/03/scorpius-me et-tarkin.html

Then I, for one, can't wait for the next version of Mosaic.
