In your other 3 examples, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the so called Somali "pirates" have been thoroughly solved as a problem. Both Iraq and Afghanistan are now liberated and governing themselves, and who even talks about the Somali pirate problem anymore? That's like saying Watergate isn't over yet.

    ...

This is going be controversial on Slashdot, but keep in mind that the initial military incursions against Iraq and Afghanistan must be considered successes. The later violence that marred the US occupation couldn't be solved with conventional military operations... at least not without inflicting a lot of collateral damage.

Reminds me of a story a friend told me from way back when Magic Johnson first told the world about his HIV. (And yes this is an extremely tasteless joke, but that's not the point.)

A joke was circulating that went like this:

"Hey, did you hear that David Copperfield got AIDS?"
    "Wow, no... I didn't know..."
"Yep. Got it from doing Magic."

So my friend told this joke to a guy he works with. This guy wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. My friend overheard him repeating the joke:

"Hey, did you hear that David Copperfield got AIDS?"
    "Nope, I didn't know..."
"Yeah ... He was fucking Magic Johnson!"

Here is what happened to me.

I had a job maintaining websites, which also included several custom web applications for B2B purposes. (The company was an affiliation of distributors and manufacturers that shared some data.) I was essentially the only IT guy. We were always developing new projects. It was pretty fun.

Then my direct boss at the office where I worked dropped out of the affiliation. I was giving an option of moving to the new office, and my direct boss also offered that I could stay on at his business (same physical location, but a distinct and different company). I didn't want to move, so I chose the latter.

Well the "new" job didn't have much for me to do. Basically I ended up doing a little support work (one sales guy couldn't read his email if his preview pane was gone... or minimized... stuff like that). Then I was asked to move stuff around, help with cleaning up, etc. I could see what was happening. My skills were languishing, and I was transitioning to general manual labor. I got another job pretty quickly (thankfully), and thanked them for all they had done. Don't let it happen to you. :)
