They would probably just change the contract, which they are allowed to do, and then the consumers, if they are savvy. Problem is, most consumers don't:
1) thoroughly read everything that comes in their monthly bill
2) realize that the phone companies can change the contract at will
3) realize that the consumer can void the contract if the change has an adverse effect on them
That with newer games that online play has to be confirmed. I mean, this game is follows in the footsteps of a great game to play with other friends. What happens when your friends move? You can't just drive over, you need online play if you want to play with them.
Not judging what the cops did, but in regard to the "I will get up and leave" statement, he had already been asked, multiple times, to leave, be quiet, etc, and he didn't comply with those requests. Why should anyone believe that he is going to do something now?
Just like a poster said a couple weeks back, just because you sign a contract doesn't mean can't break it at a later point. Nothing says a contract is inviolate. Granted, there may be repercussions, but thats what a contract is all about.
What were you doing being social in the library? I thought the whole point of them was to actually get away from distractions and be able to concentrate? In all seriousness though, just because someone isn't being social the exact same way you were doesn't necessarily make them anti social people. I honestly would never go to a laundromat to meet someone, partially because I never had the need to, but also because I just don't think thats a great way to meet someone I would have a lot in common with. So what if someone wants to have a get together of friends and play some games rather than going and tossing the disc in the park. Of course, you always have the people who take it to an extreme on either end. Don't let them be the base of your judgments.
Both you are your parent are wrong. Neither one is definitively better than the other, for simple fact that people like different interfaces. A lot of people I work with seems to like the nub mouse on ibm laptops. I personally can't stand using it. Does this make the touchpad style of laptop control better or worse? No, it just means they are two effective methods of input that people can use, similar to the Rio / Apple issue.
That clause doesn't seem like it alleviates YouTube from any legal situations. You can't give YouTube rights to something you don't have them for. As far as it not being a necessity and a completely voluntary activity, that doesn't mean the contract still can't be unconscionable. See the standard for US case law on unconscionable contracts:
http://www.scu.edu/law/FacWebPage/Neustadter/e-books/abridged/main/cases/Williams.html
Thats just the first full free copy of it I could find on google. While the case was never finally decided, the fact that it went through at least 3 courts without getting thrown out means that the contract could conceivably be unconscionable. Granted the two issues are seriously different, but again, IANAL.
It's still kind of annoying to have to include accessories into the cost though. They seem to be getting better about the screens, which leads me to believe you could do away with the sleeve/case. Why can't they just toss in a wired remote too? The cost to them wouldn't be much, and it could I'm a lot of people, like GPP, would appreciate it.
IANAL, but that may be able to get deemed an unconscionable clause, seeing how one-sided it as, as well as the position that YouTube is in over the "signer". It's still one more thing in the way of getting a lawyer to actually take the case.
Regarding the carpool lane, some places actually enforce it, especially via commuter call ins. I know in Washington, specifcally around the Seattle area, there are the signs every so often that designates it a carpool lane, but it also has a number to call in and report violators. Actually, thats kind of a strange resemblance to the panopticon design.
(why people on slashdot, who surely must earn at least $50/hour grouse that Apple is more expensive amaze me. 20 hours of aggravation is $1000 bucks of your time lunkheads.)
Not everyone who reads/. is lucky enough to work at a job that pays them 100K a year gross. For people that do not, the trade off of price vs time spent could be a better fit for them. But in concept I agree, a lot of times people do not realize that the time they spent doing something to save a bit of money could have been better spent doing something else.
Holy crap. Assuming that wiki page isn't lying, which would be hard to pull off with some of the hawks watching political pages, that is pretty amazing. A politician with balls as big as maddox's.
In regards to the other poster who replied saying that MS does hamstring their more intelligent programmers, this is partially true. When I was recently visiting my brother, who works as a dev there, some how some open source project came up, and it eventually led to my brother actually saying that he's not allowed to work on FOSS/OSS projects, because of the possibility for unintentional inclusion of code that is partially or wholly derived from those sources. Now whether this is just a CYA for MS so they can scapegoat someone down the road or my brother mis-interpreted some portion of his contract, it does bring some light into what the other poster says, especially with regards to stuff like this:
We should incorprate this feature or programming method into the next version of Windows/Visual Studios.
You are true in that they may not know every applicable law every time, but they should know some of the more basic ones, such as when it is lawful for them to demand specific types of identification.
So, are you disagreeing with my statement that in this case, the DMCA was used incorrectly? I'm not defending Scribd or any other places do make it kind of a pain in the ass to take something down that is obviously copyrighted, such as Pournelle's works. He, along with others, went to SFWA, and then they acted. Except they included the works of people who did not even ask them to act on their behalf.
Just because someone can't give a better system currently doesn't mean we can't criticize the current system, especially when it is used so egregiously incorrectly.
After all, I have no recollection of mere conversation being considered an undue safety risk in regards to driving.
Neither did that driver have any recollection that a car was in his blind spot, but he found out real quick that it was. Just because you don't remember anything happening doesn't mean that someone else's quick reaction didn't save you.
I don't know if I would personally call the whole series "polished" I hated MP's control scheme so much that I stopped playing it after about 15 minutes and never tried again. Not being able to strafe unless you are locked on an enemy? wtf mate. That being said, MP3 controls feel very nice comparatively, and I'm not a huge fan of the Wii controls either.
Did you happen to notice the green text in the bottom left corner of the screen during the match making lobby? Looked like debugging output. I wonder how close that build was to the gold build.

That and it's probably more likely to break coming from IKEA than a quality furniture place :)

I wish I had mod points.

err, why the quotes? It is older. Not saying thats bad, as I prefer it, but there is nothing to put the proverbial air quotes around here.
I guess you missed the part at the bottom of every /. page
you don't even have to read TFA, TFS has it all
