This is two products bundled together, Google Sidebar and Google Desktop. Desktop allows you to type in a single word and search all files, emails, songs, videos, etc. on your computer, similar to Beagle. I run it with the sidebar turned off, and then just click in the taskbar to open a browser to use it.
No, this case has little to do with Monteray. SCO tried to bring in a third ammended complaint to do with Monteray, and the Judge said no. Just to let you know. All relevant info can be found on Groklaw.
Sorry, my bad. I thought you were talking about Slashdotters who were posting on this article saying bad things about Microsoft. I have no problems with big companies myself, as long as they got to their market position ethically (or almost ethically at least).:)
It really is none of our business at all, but I really think Bill is trying to establish the image of Robin Hood For Himself.
He is robbing the rich (basically everyone on the planet who is 'rich' enough to buy his software, not to mention large corporations through law suits), and giving the money off to the poor.
No one around here has many problems with IBM, who is much larger than Microsoft. It is the tactics that made Microsoft large that people dislike. IBM cleaned itself up in the 90's and is no longer like what Microsoft is becoming (has become).
Perhaps, if you would do some research instead of just pretending you know what you are talking about (wtf am I talking about, that is the norm on Slashdot???) you would notice that SCO paid MySQL money for this deal. Read it up on Groklaw.
And if you had bothered to read and actually comprehend his comment, you would see that he never said otherwise. He was saying he hoped MySQL got their money from SCO up-front, or else the effort for porting the database could end up being a write-off. Which would explain why he posted a summary from an IBM filing talking about SCO running out of cash.
I'm assuming he didn't use actual company names in his comment because he figured people on Slashdot had brains. He obviously hasn't been around here long:-P

Doesn't matter. I formatted my computer the other day, so I had a barebones WinXP install. Obviously, I only had IE, so I used it to download Firefox. So that would count as 2 downloads for 1 computer.
Everyone seems to forget that IBM has 20 some odd claims against them from IBM, Novell and Red Hat.
Damnit...meant to say they have 20 claims against them from all 3 companies, not IBM. Slashdot needs an edit function:-P
Ummm, if SCO loses the IBM suit they will also lose the counterclaims and IBM will literally eat them alive. This is because if they lose the suit, that means they lied and IBM will be sure to win their Lanham Act claims. That is if Novell doesn't get the first helping. All leftovers will go to Red Hat. Why do you think they are delaying so much in the IBM suit?

This was modded funny, but I don't think the guy was trying to be funny, he's just confused, or needs a grammar lesson. Maybe I'm wrong though and he really was trying to be funny.
For my online correspondance, I used to use WebCT. It was ugly and a real pain in the ass to use. Some examples.
Each course had its own email account. This meant that if I wanted to read an email from Course A and I was working on Course B, I had to open another window, log into Course A, then open the email. On Insight2Learn (my school just switched to it, it is a competitor to WebCT....or else custom built by the school, not sure which), it is one email account, so I could just click email in Course B and read email from Course A.
No Paging Feature. Email is sometimes overkill. If I want to send a quick "Will do" to my teacher, I don't want to have to open another window, sign into webct, and then email the teacher. In Insight2Learn, I click the pager icon, type the message in the new window that automatically pops up, and click send, to any teacher or student in any course.
STUPID LINKS!!! The way the javascript is set up on this stupid thing, if I want to middle click Email in Firefox to open it up in a new tab, I get a blank window. I have to either manually open a new window and sign in, or else click on email and leave the page i am on.
Missing Emails. Assignments got lost all of the time. Don't even get me started on this.
Flash. I am retaking a course that I originally took in WebCT, and am now taking in Insight2Learn. Flash content only occasionally loaded in WebCT, it always loads in Insight2Learn.
Shitty Compatability. If I want to use Opera for homework, I get a stupid message every time I open a new page about how I'm using an incompatable browser. Literally. A little box comes up EVERY TIME. This is despite the fact that all of WebCT's features work with no problem in Opera. I mean, seriously, pop the box up once when you first log in saying it might not work, and then leave me the fuck alone.
All in all, I hope WebCT dies a horrible death. Maybe students all over the world will luck out and blackboard will kill their products. Even my teachers hated it, they are the ones who recommended changing the system.
He stole the code. He electronically hacked into systems and stole code. This is completely different than normal copyright infringement, where you legally have access to something and then copy it illegally. He obtained this source code illegally (hence, he stole it). See the difference?
Slashdot has an RSS Feed for front page stories. I think they should add a second one for Google stories. It would look something like this:

Lol, the whole point of the program is for it to index your files so you can search them, just like with Beagle on Linux.

Name me one browser that can search all files, songs, web history, IM conversations, emails, etc on your desktop by typing in a single search word.
Last I checked, Google trademarked the word "Beta"

A modern day Robbing Hood if you will
Which lawsuits would those be?

Holy fuck, I'm scared now. Forbes is coming. I'm pulling my blog off the internet right this minute.
Google hires two new key executives.
Did you RTFA? I suggest you do, MySQL's CEO addresses that concern.

This would be targetted at normal consumers. Trust me, Paris Hilton saying "That's Hot" would mean way more to them than benchmarks.

Replying to myself here. Desire2Learn I meant to say, not Insight2Learn (need to sleep more lol).

Copyright law allows you to make a backup copy.
The GPL with an exception would allow it. Or they could just choose another license, or even make their own.
