  1. Re:Limitations of Linux on ZFS On Linux - It's Alive! · · Score: 2, Informative

People do not complain because they realize that the lack of openness that you greatly exaggerate is only to require GPL'd code to remain GPL'd. GPL is not a license of "openness" -- it is a mechanism by which to counteract copyright (by means of copyleft). It is restrictive in the sense that proprietary software has restrictions, but in the opposite manner. You must keep it free in the same way that you must keep propietary software closed and proprietary by law. My opinion is that this is a good thing for furthering the Free Software movement. Stallman tries to make it clear that the number of people using your code is of no importance, but rather that it remain free.

  2. Re:Grub on ZFS On Linux - It's Alive! · · Score: 2, Informative

Getting GRUB to load ZFS was easy since Sun released GPL boot code which could minimally read a ZFS partition. The hard part is making it so that the kernel can use the filesystem as root, which requires ZFS to be built into the kernel. Unless you are using an initrd or some other FS for the boot partition. Direct booting is extremely difficult.

  3. Re:Why not in the kernel? on ZFS On Linux - It's Alive! · · Score: 3, Informative

It has been decided that the deciding factor with the GPL is whether or not something links to it. Instead of a userspace program which simply makes a system call by tripping an interrupt or using the SYSENTER opcode (which would not require kernel source code to do), a kernel module (which, without FUSE, a filesystem must be) actually gets linked into kernel space, and has its symbols added to the kernel. Any calls to other parts of the kernel directly call the kernel. That is the distinction.

The summary makes it sound as if ZFS will ever be included in the kernel. Anything FUSE will never be in the kernel, except the FUSE driver itself. Userspace programs and kernelspace are considered separate for a reason.

Of course, this will all change if both Sun and Torvalds switch to GPL3...

I think you are trying to make a sarcastic remark on how we all want capitalism (I'm American), yet despise this DRM situation. However, one important note is that legislation like the DRM is hardly capitalistic -- if anything, its socialism, enforcing a policy. With a more pure system of capitalism, you would never find the government essentially protecting corporations with legislation -- that leads to monopolies.

This would true except for the fact that our market is NOT a 'zero-sum' system. Just because someone makes money does not mean someone else has to lose money. Investors are investing in these companies for their own benefit, but what does the company do with this money? They use it to expand their business, fund things, etcetera. This creates wealth -- when a company produces a product, that is wealth, in terms of stock. Nobody lost money in the production of that product. In fact, others probably gained wealth as well, as that company may have bought materials and parts from other companies, with them making a profit off of selling their created wealth. Just because there is a static amount of physical cash in this system does not mean that the amount of wealth is static.

The libertarian belief is that there should be less government, but we do understand its place, and understand that some government is needed. Just spouting that you hate government and how we are all "fucked", without any connection, any evidence, even some analysis as to how you came to this conclusion... I hope nobody actually think's libertarians are like this.

About ISPs -- ISP's provide connectivity between points. It's what they do -- they are the common point in the pipe between Google and the enduser. Are they supposed to be paying Google for it's content? No, Google pays them for the connectivity that gives them the users that watch their ads and creates their profits. Google, nor the ISP, is "evil" here, theyre just providing a service, a very much needed one.

If you go to a porn site using a browser like firefox, and dont allow any executable programs to be run (which is really quite simple, just click cancel if one attempts to download), nothing at all will happen, i assure you.

I will admit that some p2p programs do come with a payload of spyware, and other goodies, but if you pick right, you are in the clear: For example...Limewire has nothing of the sort.

I have been going back and forth between gentoo and windows xp for years, and other than a close encounter with the blaster virus (fixable by downloading a program called fixblast), i have never had any problems: Windows itself is not that insecure, unless you really are running an old unpatched version that can be attacked through a security whole (on dmz, because if your natted with no port forwarding I would say you're safe), you are safe.

All the problems result from ignorant users. For example, with the recent aim virus going around (the one that im's a link to a virus), if people would see that it attempts to download a "com" (executable) file, it would be pretty obvious.

I believe someone above said that if you dont automatically open executables from friends, stay patched, and use firefox (and gaim instead of aim), you are relatively safe.
