    You hit the nail on the head. Content should be separated as much as possible from presentation. Just think of CSS and XHTML. Maybe the reason why M$ wants to break this rule is that it goes against some of W3C's fundamental philosophies.

    "I ... built up a circuit using discrete silicon elements. Packaged grown-junction transistors were used. Resistors were formed by cutting small bars of silicon and etching to value. Capacitors were cut from diffused silicon power transistor wafers, metallized on both sides. This unit was assembled and demonstrated to Adcock on August 28, 1958."

    This guy was a true hacker! I wish I had the opportunity to meet him. Rest in peace Jack Kilby.

    The key is taking the time to walk through the advanced calibration setup under System Preferences > Displays > Color. When I first got my iBook, it has a yellowish tint to the screen. After some careful calibration, it now looks almost as good a PowerBook's screen (a little less bright though).

    Now to say something about the job market... just to stay on topic ;)

    I just landed a PERL programming job on Friday! However, I'm Canadian, so I guess that doesn't really say anything about the state of job availability in the US IT industry...

    I say start from scratch, and engineer a system for today's hardware. Also, don't try to provide backwards compatibility for X. Just start fresh. Application developers will follow.

    k, I don't know whether this "between 2 and 5(!) times slower" stat is true, but even if it is, it should hardly matter. The time it takes to create a thread should be insignificant compared to the time it takes for the thread to do its work (at least, in a good program). Not to mention that in the case of a multithreaded server (like Apache 2), thread pools are used so that less time is spent creating and destroying threads.
