I'll tell you what *I* think needs to be done: integration of iPod with a full Palm OS capability.
Look at what they've done by adding iCal and iDirectory (or whatever it's called) to the iPod. Looks like all they are really missing is a good input interface on the iPod.
I'll be getting an iPod to replace my elderly PalmPilot (says USRobotics on it, if that gives you an idea), because all I need is to reference my calendar and look up the occasional phone number.
...it looks like its up by the CD/DVD drives. What's up with that?
Burners generate quite a bit of heat, especially under continuous use. Two burners mounted as closely as it looks like Apple will let you begins to approach Pentium heat generation levels.
It's market share is minimal, and I have understood the users (exactly one that I know) of MacOSX are already used to not being able to view everything similarly as the majority.
Now when the teacher will ask my kid how he made his video presentation, he will say he made it on heroine with his father at home on linux...
Can't wait to have the feds pick me up.
If you're lucky, you'll get Feds that can spell. Then they'll just laugh at you.
Could it be that management has finally caught on to the trick of buying hardware and software that requires constant expert maintenance? As an IT dept. head, wouldn't you rather buy stuff that you know would keep those under you busy and employed? You sure wouldn't want to be the one that made the decision to buy hardware/software that made the IT dept. unneeded.
(I'm not saying this happens often, but it does happen. Ever had to try to convince some MSCE to let you buy the right tool for the job, instead of the electronic version of the spork?)
Unfortunately, thanks to M$ licensing schemes, hardware that's outdated 3 minutes after the box is opened, hardware that is underdesigned and runs hot, vulnerable software, etc., IT is a money pit. This especially true in those organizations where some PHB just has to have the latest/greatest as determined by some marketing wiz.
It's a pendulum that has swung way to far one way, and will swing far the other way. Hopefully it will settle in a comfortable position soon.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but: Don't you think the LCD projector manufacturers are using the best light source for the application?
Having said that...
The only high color temperature light source you'll find suitable for this type of work will be arc lamps. HMI, MRI, HID, etc. In terms of heat:light output ratios, arc lamps put out the most light per btu of heat of any other point source lamp. Point source is important. Light from a diffuse source (flourescent, multiple LED, etc) is nearly impossible to deliver through optics in an orderly fashion.
As you've probably found, getting the lamp is easy. Matching it to a suitable power source is difficult.
Additionally: No matter what lamp you use, your LCD panels and optics will also need some cooling
These forums are not about gaining karma. These forums are about speaking the truth, opening an informed dialogue and not shying away from contentious issues.
Informed dialog? I'm ready when you are.
Obviously, your only intent is to preserve your precious karma.
If that were true, I wouldn't be making off-topic replies to off-topic replies to off-topic replies to trolls.
You only say what you know will be popular. The consummate politician. Your posts are popular but are filled with nothing but populist drivel. You have never taken a stand for anything you believe in. You only parrot the party line.
No, my posts are not always popular. I'm a Mac user, remember. However, many people have difficulty grasping the concept of an intelligent Mac user.
If I were concerned about being 'popular', I'd buy a PC like all the rest of the sheep.
I sure wouldn't be posting to Slashdot as a Mac user if I were worried about popularity.
Spineless.
Right, whatever.
"Whoa, dude! My Karma is, like, "Excellent"!
We don't care.
This is a discussion, not a popularity contest.
Karma does not get you elected.
Your focus on karma at the expense of the discussion is sad.
That's my sig. Learn the difference. It's humor. Get a sense.
You own a Mac.
I own 180 Macs.
Their cost is non-trivial.
Their performance is substandard.
Let me guess, you've got 180 Macs that:
Are poorly maintained.
Are expected to perform beyond their designed and/or advertised capabilities.
Are older than dirt.
There are plenty of knowledgeable Mac techs out there. Ask for help.
Their OS is the best on the market.
Probably. There are plenty of OSs that aren't "on the market."
You are likely to be content with your mac's performance.
No, I'm not content with the performance of anything I own. That's why tinker, modify, overclock, etc. Much of it on my Mac.
I could care less.
I'm guessing that you couldn't care less. Or do you really care that much?
Apple will not get another dime from me untill their harware is held to the standard their OS is.
Well, since their hardware already outperforms (MTBF, useable life, ROI) nearly all x86 hardware out there, I'd say they have a good head start.
Even Steve Jobs prefers the performance of x86 over PowerPC. Pixar uses x86 linux clusters.
Since their in-house software (written long before Jobs was back in control of Apple) was designed for x86 hardware, I'd expect them to stick with their investments.
Shut the Fuck up.
Ah yes. When running out of valid arguments, always go for the expletive. Congratulations.
Now what incentive do I have to write decent comments?
Actually, they seemed to have taken away the "I've got karma to burn, so I think I'll be an asshole today." option. Not knowing exactly how "Excellent" I am keeps me from being the troll I'm capable of being.
It happens automagically on your machine? I have to drag that damn CD icon into my mp3 collection!
iTunes. You can set prefs to automagically import the songs off the cd in a choice of formats and qualities upon insertion, and then eject the cd when it's done. You can choose to play the cd or not while it's importing.
If you've got a net connection while it's importing, it builds artist>album directories for the files.
Every time you play a CD, the machine automatically copies its tracks onto its built-in 20-gigabyte hard drive. It will then try to get album track information off the CD or, alternately, you can use the PC link to get titles off your favorite cddb-like site.
I've got one of these. It's called a Macintosh. Does other fun things too.
One shining example would be Southwest Airlines. They are the only major US airline who has recently shown a profit. They have never had mass layoffs. A visit to their offices shows that people are actively encouraged by the corp. culture to express their individuality. The first time I was in their office I wondered if they sponsored contests for how wild you could make a cube or office look with decorations and other expressive items.
Here's why SWA is so successful:
Herb Kelleher is probably the best known example of a CEO (Southwest Airlines) who insists on hiring employees with a good sense of humor. In filling any position, says Kelleher, "what we are looking for, first and foremost, is a sense of humor . . . We don't care much about education and expertise, because we can train people . . . We hire attitudes." In fact, during job interviews, job candidates are specifically asked to give an example of how they're recently used their sense of humor on the job, and how they've "used humor to defuse a difficult situation." This approach has helped make Southwest Airlines the most successful airline in the country. Employees love working for Southwest, and do whatever it takes to sustain high levels of performance and quality service. And they have fun in he process! If it works for Southwest, it can also work for you.
I've met the man and he's just as silly as the flight attendents that sing the safety rules to you. He deserves every penny he's made with that company.
I'll be getting an iPod to replace my elderly PalmPilot (says USRobotics on it, if that gives you an idea), because all I need is to reference my calendar and look up the occasional phone number.
Most of the Mac users I know are using IE, since it has been the "best" available Mac browser for the past couple of years.
Might help you to know your market.
Nice.

heroin=drug

Yeah, think of the millions in research grants they could have gotten if they'd have called it a Laser Medical Dildo instead.
Tell me, how does Japan's ID plan affect their privacy any more than the US social security number system affect ours (in the US)?
1000 points for a bumper?? What the heck is that about?
The best pinball machines have only 4-digit scoring systems.

Once again, I've been of no help.
Please lookup 'censorship' in the dictionary.
Thank you.

Is the whole of his experience with Apple based on his use of the Apple ][e?
Careful, you'll get stories of "homebuilt PCs" that were nothing more than snap-together kits built of parts from the WalMart bargain bins.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. ^_-
