Detergents don't become obsolete. If your analogy held, there would be no pressure to come out with a new OS, since a large portion of the market is buying a Microsoft product. The reason this is relevant is that the percieved failings of the newer product reflect badly on the continued success of the company that produces it. Let's illustrate.

Say I own a 1965 Mustang. Love it, the handlings great, the lines are sleek, I can pick up any woman in this car. Then Ford releases a newer model. Boxy, underpowered, horrible color schemes, all around a BAD design. Does Ford care if nobody buys the newer model? Even if they were still selling the 1965 model (to keep my analogy valid), this still would result in a lack of faith in Ford. You would hear customers saying, "They used to make such good cars....what happened?"

So I submit that XP having a stronger customer perception is NOT something Microsoft wants. Not if they want to stay relevant.

So, point made, grammar checked....I even got a car analogy in there. I'm proud of myself.

Good references to previous Dr. Who history...this is the same universe (Um...Universe1, not Universe2...you know what I mean). 8. Re:Increased sales, but what about profits? on iTunes Sales Ban Does Increase CD Sales · · Score: 1

Thats certainly one big factor. The math shows that theres a certain threshold where online profits outstrip physical media. Given the sales, if these two CDs were priced the same, the online profits creep ahead at just about $13.79/CD. Of course they weren't. It's even more pronounced.

Chris Brown's CD, which lists at $18.98, sold less physical CDs, but ended up making a profit of $8,015,920. Ne-Yo lists at $13.98, making more CD sales, but only ending up with a profit of $7,272,980.

This does not take into account of physical costs like shipping and storing. Nor does it take into account costs of online storage and bandwidth (although probably a lot less than warehousing and shipping).

So just taking the numbers from sales and cost of actual production (assuming $1 per CD actually duplicated, recording, marketing, and associated costs would be the same for both types of sales), the heavier online sales made the difference and actually made MORE profit...just like we've been saying all along.

We're also not taking into account that, to be fair, you'd have to add in the online sales of all the OTHER tracks on the album to get a clearer picture of what's going on. This comparison is merely single vs. album in differing media. Once you add in online sales of other singles (I dont know if they're available), the online sales figures rise...while the CD sales stay the same.

There's more information to be had here, and focusing on initial sales is rather misleading. But as the RIAA et al. try to claim postponing/banning online sales drives up CD sales, they fail to notice that it actually makes them LESS money.

That's fine and dandy, except that when you force western morals onto a nonwestern audience, you're committing a moral fault in and of itself.

So what you're saying here is that the Chinese WANT to be suppressed? This is moral and right for THEM? Hm....seems to me that this isn't really that kind of arguement. If the Chinese wanted to be suppressed that would be one thing, but somehow I'm not seeing that.

I'm tired of excusing the actions of corporations in the name of 'business'. Yes, I understand that they exist to make money....but if Hershey's were adding body parts to their candy bars (Now with METATARSELS!), or Enron cooking the books and embezzling millions, or Ford installing faulty seatbelts.....you'd probably scream bloody murder.

Or is this acceptable business practices since they're in China and it's none of your problem?

Maybe I should start selling my Baby Finger Candy Bars over there....

Were Yahoo to balk the Chinese, they could be told to pack up shop and leave, which would do nothing to promote free speech for the Chinese people.

I know we've been over this point before (wrt Google), but there's a very big step between passively complying with local laws banning information and helping to find political prisoners. If I had a choice between no Yahoo or a Yahoo that is actively aiding the suppression of free speech, I'd gladly tell Yahoo to take a hike.

Of course, the Chinese population won't know Yahoo is selling them out, since all reports of this will be blocked from Chinese servers. Move along, nothing to see here...

Um, no, implying his brother could not be the perp. You share 25% of your DNA with full siblings. You share 50% with your parents and 50% with your children.

The amount of genetic material you share with your siblings is an average which theoretically would lie at 50%. Since there are millions of combinations of different genes that could conceivably go into a haploid cell (sperm/ovum), the chances are wildly improbable that you could have exactly the same genes from your mother and father that created you actually happen again. Were this the case, you'd essentially have an identical twin not born of the same conception. Conversly, having a sibling with NO common genetic material is also highly improbable. For siblings of the same sex, its actually impossible (You'd both get Dad's X or Y chromosome, since he has only one of either.)
