If MS are so sure about Vista's security and anti-piracy abilities, they should release the image in P2P networks. That way, it'd be quick for legal customers to download and then purchase.
The whole "if we reduce the length of copyright, they'll make more stuff" argument only holds up for certain examples.
The downside to this idea is that 5 to 10 years won't be enough time to make a worthwhile profit on certain material. If an artist decides that a certain creation is going to cost too much to make a worthwhile profit within the time span, they might not create it at all.
Market forces state a popular creation will profit faster - but some of the most ground-breaking music/writing was definitely not popular when it was conceived.
Copyright should be there to help promote innovation by helping the innovators to make a profit on what they have done.
While I can't think of the best solution, a blanket 10, 20, 30 years won't solve the problem. Which takes more effort: an author writing a short story, an author writing a novel, an artist taking a decade to write a ground-breaking new album, a computer generating a new techo album in a few hours?
It's a flawed implementation of a necessary concept.
"We think Cisco's trademark lawsuit is silly," Yeah, who would ever try to trademark and enforce an every-day word by putting a lowercase "i" in front of it? Tsh! Cisco are so silly!
Tsh! And where's Quantum Leap in all that? Sliders? Come on! I want/every/ sci-fi (soft, hard, slap-stick or other) listed pronto!;)
I find it strange that you've ranked the new BSG so highly - Apart from the high budget, there's no originality in it and they've lost key plot points that made BSG so intriguing. (IMHO, of course) But, then, I thought the story alone in B5 made it one of the greatest sci-fis (save for mid-series 5).
I think he was referring to no moving parts and cost per GB.
Using these criteria, flash is less likely to fail from careless usage and much more expensive per GB.
However, the maximum writes per block (albeit approx. 1 million in high-end flash) might be a limiting factor. If you think about how much HDD work any OS performs when doing normal work, the lifetime of these 'drives' is significantly lower than a physical HDD.
As soon as some of the newer flash tech becomes commercial viable, things are going to get very interesting for the HDD market, though (oh, the speed!)
But the point is necessarily to use rooftops to do away with power stations, but use them to supplement and assist them. Assuming you have a similar system to the UK, don't you sell back the power you aren't using for the providers to sell to others?
Think about it: If all roofs were photovoltaic, how many power stations could be retired?
You're not alone.
Like you, I can see the difference with HD to SD, but I don't have a +40" screen or sit close enough to my 28" to actually care.
Though, I do like the improvement with programs being filmed in HD; you can see the improvement even on an SD TV.
When I can justify buying the 50" in the shop down the road I'll start to care.
But if they didn't have access to a gun, it would have turned out very differently, anyway. What is inherently more violent: a videogame depicting violence, or a handgun with ammunition?
It's a sad truth that there are people out there easily swayed and who just "snap" and commit such atrocities; but I don't believe banning violent videogames will solve anything.
Well, it would be nice to see a non-commercially and non-politically incensed organisation looking after the rather important lists.
I may not want the USA government to be in charge of the root DNSs, but it could have gone horribly wrong if an agreement wasn't reached. If I couldn't have got to Penny Arcade or PvP... No! I can't think like that!
What are you people on?! What exactly do you think a desktop system is?
I'm with the guy that said all desktop Photoshop users have an illegal copy. A 'desktop' user wouldn't need the power of Photoshop, they'd only need something like IrfanView or the GIMP (and even that would be too much to view/crop/print pictures).
The desktop users I know want a browser, an email client, a picture viewer, perhaps a music player. Most modern Linux distros come with those as standard.
And, back on the Windows Update thing, apt-get (even automated in distros like Ubuntu) will update the/applications/ automatically... that's not what Windows Update does.
I think that for desktop users, there are some stunning distros available (Gobo, Knoppix, Ubuntu, KUbuntu, to name a few) that are install-and-go.
If you start talking about Photoshop, 3D graphics, etc, you've left the desktop market and moved in to specialist areas.
In my office, we were wondering if Lucas would want it to fit with 1 as badly as he made 3 fit with 4. If so, he may turn it in to a soft-core porn with the conceiving if Annakin.
A colleague pointed out Annakin was supposed to be conceived by the force, which brought out disturbing thoughts that perhaps Yoda got his mother drunk and... I'm sure you can imagine the rest *cringes*

Sounds about right.
On that note, EA should stop crying - imagine how much Duke Nukem Forever is costing to develop!

My entire universe has been shaken.
I go on holiday for a couple of weeks, and when I return Slashdot has had a facelift. Slashdot... I may go in to shock...
(sorry for being off-topic - completely took me by surprise)
What a load of twoddle! If you ask me, they're too proud to accept that some non-MS ideas are good ones.
guys, if you're reading a satirical British website and you don't get something, ignore it.

I'll spell it out: it - is - a - joke
Sorry if I'm condescending you, but I thought that such net veterans as yourselves would be used to this kind of thing by now (refer to the classic "Is Your Son a Computer Hacker?" page: http://www.adequacy.org/public/stories/2001.12.2.

This must be related to your location, because (for me at least) Yahoo's results are comparable with Google's.
Both of the top results are generical SNES hacks with links to SMW
Why not an alphabeta? Oh, wait...
