Rehabilitate him, you say. Is he ill? Is he handicapped? Is he being manipulated? No. He made his choices and got caught. Now it's *retribution time*. Yeah, revenge. Criminals commit crimes deliberately, I don't see why we should assume that they are somehow to be "saved", saved by what I ask? Their own decisions? I lead a somewhat free life just like they do, they have always had a choice, they chose to commit crimes, and now they get caught and suddenly it's "think of the criminals" time? No way. Rehabilitation works for people who *care* about social acceptance. This kind of people obviously do not care.
However I believe that spamming should not be a crime. In the grand scheme of things... robbing someone is much worse.

The geeks on /., debating contrasting viewpoints in a relaxed atmosphere... kind of.

The people who take GWB as your representative are the ones that hate you unconditionally. They're a lost cause and you can't possibly hope to win them over. They're fueled by the EU propaganda and the fashionable antiamericanism that pervades our life - and they are blissfully oblivious to how American they themselves are in their everyday life.
But there are also smarter people, like me, who don't need to oversimplify and hate. You can rest assured that some people assess your actions critically and logically, and guess how you come out of that? Average.

Of course there's also the scenario where supply grows because suddenly the market is more profitable, so new investors enter it and drive the price down to where it was before; but this can never happen unless the gov't fully deregulates the market itself and we all know this will never happen.

E.g. the USA do NOT enjoy freedom of speech currently (no other country does, either). It's got to do with the whole "slippery slope" argument which is, unfortunately, very correct.
BTW the gov't is VERY OBVIOUSLY the only thing in life that can imperil my freedom, seeing as it is the only entity that passese LAWS regulating my private life and property. This guy collected PUBLICLY available info, just like the anti-abortionists did, so there's nothing wrong with that. Nothing else needs to be taken into consideration - intent does not mean anything, I might wish to bash the anti-abortionists' heads, for example (and in fact I do), but that does not justify my imprisoning or anything UNLESS I also ACT on my desires - in which case I am punished because of my ACTS, not my INTENT.
