  2. Re:Coming Soon on What's Not To Like About New iPad? · · Score: 1

Worst of all is how quickly it drains the battery. On standby it loses 50 mA+/hour. In actual use it loses 1000 mA+/hour. So it gets less than 100 hours on standby, and 5 hours in normal use patterns.

That should probably be mWh, as mA is just the momentary flow of current.

  3. Flicking back and forth on Animating From Markup Code To Rendered Result · · Score: 1

It is actually quite hard to follow where each part of the text takes its new place in the transition. You can focus on one point ok but seeing the whole text is tough. If I would be using that, I think I would spend a lot of time flicking back and forth between the two views.

That being said, the code behind that gizmo must be quite sophisticated. It's pretty cool accomplishment.

It could be cool though if integrated into something like Wikipedia, which I think might be the target demographic, but I got bored of the video after about a minute so I'm not sure.

  7. Why do they make crappy displays? on Windows 8 and Screen Resolution: WXGA Still Most Popular · · Score: 1

Especially amongst the professional crowd, there's clearly a demand for displays with more vertical pixels. If someone just created laptops with 1920x1200 and 1280x1024, matte coating, hell, put a IPS panel there (they are cheap enough to make). It would sell like hot pretzels in Oktoberfest.

What is interesting is that 320x200 has actually the same aspect ratio than 1280x800. Well, to be honest, I think it was designed to be used in the 4:3 format with non-square pixels. However it's nice to run games in DosBOX with sharp quad-pixeled graphics.

Back in the Windows98 days one could make some good arguments for Linux in terms of stability, security and such, but those days are long gone and Microsoft and Apples OS offerings are just as stable as your Linux box these days, if not even more so.

That is true — actually Linux has become more buggy than Windows.

My experience is that Windows is missing lots of features. No SSH support; no support for filesystems other than NTFS and FAT; no low level disk tools (dd); poor NFS support; doesn't come with a decent text editor.... I could carry on, but you get the idea.

It's interesting how Windows carries a lot from the same bag of clunky applications that were in Windows 95. Are they still very cautious of being too competetive by including "too good" tools?

  20. Re:Finally get good doc support? on LibreOffice 3.5.1 Released With Fixes · · Score: 1

I've tried to introduce people to OpenOffice (and LibreOffice after they forked from OO). I've had more than a few instances where a friend tries to open an old college assignment or something in OO/LO and the formatting is completely fucked.

Works other ways too: last autumn a schoolwork doc of mine including charts and line art was all Looney Tunes when afterwards viewed in MS Word. For this kind of quirks LibreOffice is too dangerous to be used in the real world.

The thing is, as a word processor, LO is excellent. But the compatibility with Word needs more work regarding the accuracy how documents are displayed and opened/saved. This is important thing to get right.
