Of course there is no absolute proof of detrimental effects on wildlife. But it is rather telling that there was no comment when specifically asked about it.

My guess would be that if they hadnt bothered to test if there could be detrimental effects the answer would have been along the lines of : No effect on wildlife has been found.

If they had done even the smallest tests and found no detrimental effects then the answer would be : No effects have been found in our testing.

But the fact that there is specifically no comment suggests to me that they have let rip a couple of times and proceeded to bust out the nets and scoop up all the floating dead things to cook up for dinner.

From TFA it seems like it is a fairly focussed blast which would hopefully mean limited damage to wildlife but the fact that they wont say doesnt really inspire confidence.

  13. The problem with the door analogy..... on Wireless Hijacker Dealt First UK Punishment · · Score: 0

is that with a door it is obvious:
    *who owns the door
    *where the door leads to
*if have permission to enter or otherwise regardless of whether there is a "keep out" or "everyone welcome" sign.

It is not that easy with a wireless access point.

    This is mainly because:
    1) the wireless network can extend well beyond the physical limits of the property that it is based on.
    2) The only indication of what the network is for is the SSID which is not usually very helpful at all.

If you turn on your computer and a wireless connection becomes available how do you know if this is a free and open wireless network from a local starbucks or soem freewireless organisation/council (eg http://bayareafreefi.com/article.php?id=96&title=L ondon+gets+a+mile+of+free+Wi-Fi)? or if it is a private network? The SSID most likely will not help and you would most likely have some trouble finding exactly where the signal originates from.

So IMHO an open (unsecured) network is just that. Open for all to use.

If you dont secure your network then you are leaving it open for others to use. If you dont want this to happen then secure it in some way (or stop it from transmitting outside your property - not an easy task).

If there is any security at all then it is closed and private.

Whether you agree with that or not I dont think the door anaolgy can be used to argue this case one way or the other, it just isnt the same thing. The door doesnt extend way out past the property, you can easily see what the door is connected to and who it belongs to, there arent "free doors" available in the same area. doesnt work.

the only reason I would care about this in the slightest is if everyone bails out of hotmail and starts using the same email providers as I do (yahoo + gmail). Then all the spammers start to target those providers specifically, ignoring hotmail (particularly if hotmail blocks all spam). This means I get more spam. Although perhaps yahoo and gmail will be a little more pro-active with spam control than Hotmail was (which is why I bailed from them originally) and this wont matter too much. Time will tell I suppose.

At the moment I am quite happy with Hotmail attracting the majority of the spam. Unless of course Spam is spread more evenly across providers and it just seems like I am getting less on yahoo and gmail because they are better at dealing with it than hotmail.

I would much prefer to use it in the reverse. Have this as the main and a small air tank as the reserve (as it shows in the diagram). Thousands of people a day use things where a single failure can kill them (e.g. current SCUBA tanks, parachutes, Bungy jumping, abseiling).

I imagine a few divers could use up the dissolved air pretty quickly. I would hope there is some kind of sensor/monitor keeping an eye on how much air/oxygen is in the surrounding water so you know when to move on.

Another thought, what about the effect on the sea life at high traffic dive sites. Usually popular dive sites have a lot of sea life, which also rely on the oxygen levels in the water. You get a lot of people in there using up the oxygen as well the little fishies mightn't like that!
