  11. Bastardization of a great work on Dune Scores Huge Ratings · · Score: 1

If the original novel was good enough to sell MILLIONS of copies and inspire a movie and a television miniseries then why change key elements of the story?

Paul had his sons in the next book and not one of them was killed in the first.

The emporer's daughter was created solely for this television adaption.

There were no weirding modules in the television mini as there should have been, nor did Paul use the weirding voice to crash the ship that was taking he and his mother over the desert! Key to the development of the character's awareness of his abilities!

Duncan did not rescue Paul and his mother from the deep desert.

They never attacked the Harkonans until Paul was Moadib and they had the weirding modules.

He DID NOT marry the fabricated emporer's daughter in the book! Complete garbage!

Oh, and the guy playing Gernie sucked a dead donkey's balls dry. He was horrible!

I thoroughly hated this series. There was absolutely no need whatsoever to alter the story from the original in any way. They had a six hour canvas to treat it with respect and do it right. But, like all television projects based on books, they failed miserably.

  12. Re:There is no such thing as a free lunch. on Should Voice-over-IP Be Regulated? · · Score: 1

Kiss, if you do not connect using the telco's equipment, then they are not entitled to regulate the connectivity. Given that, it would be impossible for them to regulate it effectively given alternate connectivity methods. Therefore, it is wrong, unjust and unfair for the telcos to essentially regulate nothing more than a protocol that may or may not run on their equipment.

Furthermore, 900 number and other telephone sex services, telephone mail order companies, phone chat lines or other telephone based services (virtually anything you order over the telephone) do not have to share a portion of their profits with the telcos for using the telephone. They simply have to pay their phone bills. ISPs should, and are, no different. They are providing a service that may or may not make use of the telco's infrastructure just like the florist that takes orders from land lines and cell phones.

The attitude you are inferring from this story is not the usual /. socialist ranting (I'm getting quite tired of it myself, watch me get moderated into oblivion now...); it is the expression of shock at having one type of business (ISPs) being treated unfairly simply because a keyboard is involved.

  13. No way in Hell... on Should Voice-over-IP Be Regulated? · · Score: 2

Cable modems, satellites (yeah, I know I spelled it wrong) and any new methods of connectivity not yet developed are not under the control of the telcos.

For those using voice over IP on telephone dial-ups, then perhaps the telco will have a legitimate claim. However, I do not make any use of the telco's infrastructure, and I would gladly take them to court for stealing fees from my ISP!

Just more people that don't understand making laws that they can't fully comprehend...

  14. Comics are NOT a genre! on Review: "Unbreakable" · · Score: 2

The movie is a bit dawdly in parts, but the story-telling really is astonishingly faithful to the comic-book genre: simple, improbable, fantastic.

    Wrong.

Comics are a medium, just like film or television or a book. Within that medium there are different genres. In comics, you have the superhero (just the American version/bastardization of all the world's hero myths), drama, spooky/suspense/horror, kids' and humor.

Your review, except for this misstatement of yours, is exceptional. Thank you for taking the time to write a careful review without giving anything away.

That, or you're dealing with some very stupid merchants (more than likely).

You see, with telephone or Internet or other non in-person transactions, they don't need much in the way of proof of ID. Visa, and other credit card companies will pay all theft claims. It's very expensive, and that's why the credit card rates are so ridiculously high.

They simply do not need your picture with the credit card. Hell, you don't even have to do that with PayPal.com!

You'll notice that Napster and its users charge no fees like eBay, newspapers and those who sell your products in meatspace. What's the difference?
