  1. Windows VM performance boost on How Much Virtual Memory is Enough? · · Score: 1

Remember to fix your pagefile / swapfile size, i.e. set the minimum pagefile size = maximum pagefile size.

Yes, having a pagefile that resizes automatically is more space-efficient, but this will slow down your system whenever you need more memory. I get really irritated when my pagefile increases in size by hundreds of megabytes whenever I load memory intensive games and when my pagefile shrinks back to normal when the games quit.

Is there really a difference between on-board audio and the audio cards that are mentioned in this article?
There may be a difference in the CPU utilization of your audio (sound) processor.

I have a MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard that came with a Realtek 880/860 onboard sound processor. Basically, the frame rates of 3D games became noticebly lower when I had used the onboard sound processor as compared to the times when I had used a Creative Soundblaster Live! PCI card. I suppose this has to do with the contention of processing resources between the onboard sound processor and the rest of the system. The use of the PCI sound card (SBLive has EMU10K1 processor, a 2.44 million transistor DSP capable of 1000 MIPS for audio processing) perhaps relieved a great deal the sound processing required by the games and therefore allowing the CPU to have more time to serve the games; as a result, the frame rates were higher.

If you are interested about my experience with onboard sound processor and gaming performance, you can read it here.
  3. Reason behind dolphins swimming alongside boats on Goldfish Smarter Than Dolphins · · Score: 4, Interesting

Just to add on. I remember watching this in the Discovery Channel. Most people assumed that the dolphins are intelligent and friendly such that when boats sail in the ocean, they swim alongside the boat or even in front of the boat just to mingle with their human friends. However, this was not the *real* reason. Apparently, they noticed that there are a bunch of smaller, baby dolphins swimming in the opposite direction away from the boat, while those that mingle with the humans are the adult dolphins. This can be seen that the adults are distracting the humans while their youngs can swim off to a safer place. Such altruistic behaviour is hard to find in the aquatic world.

  5. Re:How about eliminating 802.11x on Upgrading Wi-Fi — What, When, and Why · · Score: 1

The IEEE 802.16x standard is for wireless MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) while the IEEE 802.11x is for wireless LAN. The 802.11G + MIMO combination currently available on the market offers bandwidth comparable to the 802.16x networks. Note that the 802.16x does not give long range and large bandwidth; it gives either long range or large bandwidth. This is the same for 802.11x. You get the highest promised data rates (e.g. 54Mbps for G, 108 Mbps for Super-G) at using the best modulation, but this can only be achieved when the SNR is high, that is, you are near to the access point.

802.16x is designed for MAN because it is able to efficiently handle a large number of subscriber stations. One of the main differences between 802.16x and 802.11x is that 802.16x utilizes TDMA/FDMA while 802.11x which uses CSMA/CA (sometimes with RTS/CTS). This gives the former the ability to scale in size. You can deploy a large network that supports 128 subscriber stations with 802.16x without significant performance hit but you can't deploy a 128-user 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN and expect everyone in the network to be satisfied with the network performance. This is due to the inefficiency of the CSMA/CA MAC protocol.
