  1. Re:MMMM... Oklahoma on Surviving Tornadoes · · Score: 1

Absolutely! We hadn't watched Twister until we moved to Oklahoma, and the people doing the weather reports in the movie were the exact same meteorologists on the TV stations. Living in Phoenix, my wife and I still break out into a "This is Gary England with the DopplerXL 9000" report whenever we get a "sever thunderstorm" which isn't too severe when compared with the F5 (yes, we were a mile away from the path in 1999). This last tornado hit some of our friends homes and would have hit ours as well.

The more alerting I can have, even if it's 30 seconds more, may be the difference between life and death.

  2. Emulation in the future on Searching for the Oldest Running Application · · Score: 1

System emulators are going to be more and more necessary to run these legacy applications that can't run on new hardware anymore (for whatever reason). Maybe this was why Microsoft snatched up VirtualPC as a way of maintaining their user base by allowing them to run the latest hardware and software as well as their older software in an emulated, but still very usable, mode.

I've heard many conflicting reports of whether they (Columbia) could have done an EVA due to limited equipment, whether another shuttle could have even been ready to go, etc., but is ther a list of things Columbia was actually capable of in orbit? Docking with ISS was out of the question--no docking capability, but getting close enough (not enough fuel?? wrong orbit?) and then doing an EVA with the few suits they have on ISS??.

What comes to mind is the scene in Apollo 13 where the Engineers get a bucketload of parts on a table and have to come up with a way to get the CO2 out of the air. They did it, but they at least had a parts list. Does a list of ALL the realistic options (even some too risky) exist in this case?

  5. Snakes in Space on The Demise of Model Rocketry? · · Score: 1

Oh great! Now how are we going to give poor unsuspecting snakes (albeit the smaller variety) the ride of their lives, or at least until the engine burns out? I swear that snake had a look of sheer terror on it's face when it came back to earth, so maybe there is some truth to this story...

  6. BSA voodoo doll Advertisement on Is the BSA "Grace Period" a Scam? · · Score: 1

Oddly enough, a web page I visited had a BSA add with a voodoo doll telling you to stick you boss "where it hurts" and then to select a pin. Selecting any of said pins then stabs the doll and you get to go on to the "whistle-blower" page. Not only was I disgusted with the add, I was also disgusted with any of their affiliates who enjoy this tactic of extortion, intimidation, and blatant "protectionism". Isn't that what the Mafia does, "protect" you from harm they may inflict?

Considering that most of the children in schools will only minimally be exposed to even another language (speaking, not programming), we're doing them a disservice by NOT exposing them to another OS. I prefer OSX, I work with NT and W2K, and my children are going to be exposed to a multitude of OSs if for nothing else than to show them there are options for everything.

Mostly, though, it'll show them that consequences come from those choices as well.

Funding is everything! Teachers and administrators ALWAYS look at the bottom line and by using Open Source materials, you are way better off financially (and technically as well). Show and prove that the techniques you are learning in the existing classes could easily be taught with Linux, FreeBSD, etc. And best of all, bring a working example or just happen to install Linux on a spare partition and show them what it can really do!
