    less arbitrary from what point of view? what does 1 meter measure? 1 centimeter? 1 anything-o-meter, nothing found in nature, it's just an effectively random measurement, is anything 1 meter? no, you use either parts of it or multiples, and not base 10 multiples either, i stand about 2 meters tall, 200 centimeters, didvide that by any number other than 5 or 10, ooh goodie, fractions, or decimal places, ok, in feet i'm 6 feet tall about, well that divides by 2 and 3, but in inches i'm 72 inches tall, well now we're getting somewhere, 2,3,4,6,8,9,12,18,24,36 now thats a useful measurement

    i'd like to see a base 120 system, it's a low enough number to be useful yet alot of stuff divides into equally, i have these conversations all the time on why the metric system stinks

    and i usually get to throw in a jibe at the french while i'm at it too

    The basis for it? One office I used to work in, a friend's office I used to vist, a school where I used to go, my roommates Mac while I was there, out of all the Mac's I've ever seen set up outside a showroom, maybe possibly 1% didn't have MS Office and a MS mouse on them, and about 50% had some kind of virtual PC software (which is itself not necessarily Microsoft, but usually is), even where the user had a PC sitting right next to the Mac, I've seen lots of Macs

    I doubt that, the first thing that gets installed on a Mac is an MS mouse, usually wheeled nowadays, second thing is MS Office, then often times some kind of Windows emulator is installed

    this isn't apple who's confused as to what to call their os Mac OS X (pronounced ecs), and some people insisted on calling it Mac OS X (pronounced ten), which kinda got screwed up when it became on apple's website no less, Mac OS X 10.2

    how about 120 centuries from now, rustling cattle wouldnt be too uncommon in immediately pre foundation days in asimov's foundation series, gotta feed those trantorians somehow, and at least not to the death swordfights have got to be a better way of settling differences than blaster tag

    ALT-F4 closes an instance of the application, if you open powerpoint 1000 times, you have to close each one, just like word, i just tried it, i opened word twice, each time i had to ALT-F4 each one, if i have 40 word documents open under 1 instance of word then one ALT-F4 closes them all, if i have 40 documents open under 40 seperaet instances of word, i need 40 ALT-F4's, and it's application specific, WordPerfect ALT-F4 does something different, from it's dos roots

    If you want to get to the root of the problem, it was the Versailles Treaty that allowed Hitler and the Nazi's to come to power, if the rest of the world hadn't punched Germany so hard they would not have had to fall back on hatred to get themselves out of it, reperations yes, but the Versailles Treaty went way too far, it even took the aspirin and heroin trademark away from Bayer (a German company)

    IT's job is to make sure the lan is up, not to police it, if users need winxp for whatever reason, tough for IT, if one of the guys needed a dos box because that's the only thing that runs his software, then thats what the user gets, IT can make suggestions, but they shouldn't be dictating commands to people like gods

    i'm a hardcore bsd-er, i won't touch linux with a 10 foot pole, it's mostly a horrid hack, and most of the useful features in it got in a year after they were in freebsd, usb off the top of my head, even with freebsd's really open license no one could be bothered to port it, now useless things like having a program that syncs with an ipaq using a palm cradle, that's cool, so that's in linux tomorrow, plus the gpl is quite distasteful, and just to prove i'm weird, i love my win2k boxes, i use whats best for whatever i do, for video editing, word processing web browsing, it's windows, for firewalls, web serving, programming, it's freebsd, tho i do have an ultra 60 sitting here, not really doing much, and to add to the fun my ftp server is actually a windows one, it had every feature i wanted with easy configuration, so i just do a little port forwarding

    i wasn't being funny, i was being serious, oh well now i can't even see my own post as i mod funny -5, perl is a hack, itunes is a hack and macs are just bad hacks, osx may be halfway decent as x is such an incredible hack, but the hardware sucks terribly

    no, not really, you want your rights as a software professional respected, why shouldn't music artists be accorded the same rights, not the riaa, but music artists, and quicktime is a nigthmare, breaking all of apples own rules about gui design, why would he want to make high bitrate mp3's? mp3 sucks and is proprietary, your argument is pretty much baseless, i want drm, i'll never use it, but i want it

    why uncompressed, use monkey's audio or a similar lossless codec, there are quite a number out there and do a pretty good job

    and there are alot of bad wma encoders out there too, the poeple i mean, a well done wma done in the current codec sounds as good as an mp3 with half the bit rate
