How is DRM any sort of issue with the Zune when you have exactly the same situation with every mp3 player, particularly the iPod? They all play regular mp3's ripped from CD's just fine. The only thing I'm irritated about on the DRM front is the lack of PlaysForSure - I think that was a big mistake - but iPods don't exactly play those either.
Such as? Lets see, you can burn your purchases to CD. You can have them on multiple computers and iPods.
Such as put them on my Zen. Vendor lock-in, whether it's with.doc or Fairplay, sucks.
And yes, I could burn them to a CD and then rip them back... but that's really inconvenient for any significant amount of music. Honestly, why should I have to go through all that just to put the music I purchased on the player I own?
You know, it's up to the oil company to make sure that no one gets their hands on the software, just like Coca Cola makes sure no one finds out about the "secret formula".
And thus, the company never publishes the things they discovered and society has to keep reinventing them, since everyone who discovers them keeps them secret. Whereas with patents, the company gets a monopoly on that particular thing for 20 years and then society is free to use it for eternity. What you propose just results is massive duplication of research.
How are they supposed to distribute the contents of your page (including any code you post) to those who view the page if you don't grant them the rights to? What's the point of putting up information if you don't give them the right to let other people see it? As another reply noted, it's exactly like any forum.
I understand and agree with the point that many of the places where these are going already have fresh water, food, etc. and investments in education are absolutely critical to their growth. But how are laptops really going to help at all? Computers are magical educational devices. You need good teachers for computers to be effective at all in the classroom. I don't know how much training teachers in these countries have using computers as educational tools. And then, why not just have a few shared computers? I don't think there's a single Western country that even approaches one laptop per child, and that's because they aren't the alpha and omega of education like some think them to be.
How is this insightful? She was "associated with" people who tried to blow up several airplanes. I use quotes because it sounds like they're saying she was a collaborator, or part of the cell. These aren't people "the government doesn't like," these are people who demonstrably tried to kill hundreds of innocent people.
My principles of saving money are worth exactly as much money as they save, of course. To put the question back at you: if you had just flown from the UK and found that the guy at the bar at the UK airport had overcharged you a pound, would you a) fly back to Britain for the dollar or b) say "so what, it's just a dollar"?`
I can't live without Slashdotter, I'm on a blazing fast university connection, and I do the latter. I wasn't even complaining, I was just observing that > 4 seconds loading time can be acceptable if there's a way to amortize it over multiple page loads.
It takes a lot longer than 4 seconds for a Slashdot story to load, particularly with the new AJAXy discussion system. I usually open up several things at a time in different tabs, which decreases the average loading time since I can read one thing while another loads. What browser were these people using?
Who cares how fast it's rendering something when it's not rendering the correct thing.
I do, since it works well enough. I still use Firefox because I haven't bothered to try out IE7 yet (and I use a lot of extensions), but I would love better rendering speed.
You've ignored the possibility that Chavez actually despises the actions of the Bush regime and genuinely would like to see a better US foreign policy.
Not everyone is solely interested in power.
Yes, I would ignore that possibility.
Another reason not to upgrade. I shouldn't have to do shit like this, it should be in the options menu. I can do that, but I really don't see any reason to bother to upgrade.
Clearly that statement was designed so all the iFanboys would know to stop reading :P

This article was accepted just because it lets kdawson put "Quantum Vortex Cores" on the front page.
Maybe they don't want to sync repositories that quickly. This prevents newly introduced bugs from quickly interfering with everyone else's work.

I wouldn't be so harsh about the brand.
But sharks can't breathe vacuum...
Sites which require logins for visiting should be boycotted and not promoted on Slashdot.

I mean, seriously, is that just a random marketing buzzword to make them sound special? Are other BIOS's not "production-quality"?

I've never used Quicken or any other money-managing software; what advantage is there over a basic Excel or Calc spreadsheet?
Google Earth wasn't developed at Google, either. They bought the company that developed it.
Not on slashdot, they don't. You must be new here.
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/26/123823 9This is an example of an article deserving itsatrap. This article doesn't.
Why do the editors abuse this category so? What does this have to do with my rights, let alone my rights online?
I do, since it works well enough. I still use Firefox because I haven't bothered to try out IE7 yet (and I use a lot of extensions), but I would love better rendering speed.
