Exactly money is a big motivator when your talking about billions lost. The problem comes when you try and put a price on things like lives and the environment. How much are those dying birds worth to you etc.
Hallelujah!! I think this every day when i drive to work. Im an electrical engineer, could quite easily sit at home and create calculation records etc. Instead i drive to my cube farm every day and sit at a computer the whole day.. I probably only have about 20 minutes worth of face to face interaction with other engineers which could quite easily be done with teleconference.
I actually spend more time chatting with other engineers on messenger who are sitting in the cubicle next to me than i do spend chatting with them during the day (I know that is a little sad but its easier than standing up and down and i can send them links easily).
wrong i have two 24" monitors on my desk one is mounted vertical and one is mounted horizontal. Works perfectly for all documents. I am mainly working with A3 schematics however.
Good experience i have had with pricing; I was living in Queensland recently and I was able to see $6AU movies with my student card any day of the week. Anyways at six bucks the movies where so cheap i actually found myself going to the movies 2-3 times a week. Now i am back in NSW and the movies here are about $14 except on Tuesdays. Funnily enough i don't even go to the movies anymore as i am not willing to pay $14 unless its looks like a really good movie.
Its funny how a small price difference can change peoples spending habits.
Outside the US this is a different matter. I can get something pretty much equivalent to the 17" macbook Pro from dell (the dell will have a better screen RGBLED) for about half the price of the macbook, as Apple plays funny games with the exchange rate..
I was going to say the same thing. A continuous 5% return on a safe investment is pretty hard to get once you include inflation and taxes etc. I would say something more realistic for a safe investment would be 2-3%..
Was gonna say, even though voting in Australia is compulsory most people don't really pay much attention to politics. Everyone i know at university who was interested in politics always leaned to the extremes....
I read about one novel a week, i have a large book library and a Sony PRS-300, and to tell you the truth i much prefer the E-book reader now as i don't have to worry about book storage or if i have a spare book with me. I tend to load up the next 4 or 5 books i plan to read so i am always ready to go. Plus its light so easy to carry in my briefcase, and i can just pop it out while i am waiting for an appointment.
Only thing i really like now in printed form is my Saturday newspaper and cooking books.
A mate of mine got doored on his GSXR750 on an 80 road! The lady opened the door completely open and he plowed into it all 200kgs of steel and 80kgs of bloke. He was very lucky he was wearing full gear and only had some minor bruises. The lady had a huge cut up her arm where his clutch leaver snapped off and tore the skin open. Imagine what could of happened to her if it was a truck....
Agreed, PdD students are not paid it is not an investment. They basically work for free and are given a small weekly allowance so that they can afford coffee, carbs and accommodation... Think how much money American universities have made off the research of their PhD students.
Have you seen the stuff they teach in general mathematics for the HSC, i remember flipping through my sisters text books a few years ago and thinking that most of the content was stuff children could be taught at around the age 13-14...
The three and four unit courses are still pretty decent though, i found after doing four unit math in high school the first six months of university mathematics was basically repetition, and it was probably about 25% of the math needed for my engineering course. All of the kids i tutored in four unit while i was studying at university where pretty bright kids.
What makes me sad is that i personally believe that most people are a lot more capable than what they come across as, just through laziness, bad parents, bad teachers, scared of making mistakes etc somehow they turn out bad which reinforced their view that they don't need that particular topic. Personally i feel like i was a moron all the way through high school, how i managed to get good marks i will never know!!
If you really want to get upset about a course that has been dumbed down, HSC Physics is where you should direct your anger. They have basically turned it into a 2 year course on how to remember formulas by rote and write essays on physics history....
Two words, Motorola Milestone (I believe its called Droid in the US). I have played with one so far and was really looking forward to the physical keyboard. But after playing with it i don't think the physical keyboard was any faster than the on screen keyboard, so maybe it is better to make the device thinner and have it a bit more portable =p
To expand on this you can even target offers to that user. So a local computer shop could target all users in the local area who are searching for ways to fix their computer. Maybe under certain keywords they would present an advertisement that offers a free "computer checkup". They would probably be willing to pay $0.10 to get that users clicks.
What you are forgetting is that the more relevant the results are the more valuable the advertisements to that user become. Lets say they have a whole heap of data about you. And the Laptop has a built in GPS. You search for a haircut and they know that you are a trendy person who is probably willing to spend $50 on a style/cut. If you where the local Hairdresser 500m away from that user how much would you be willing to pay to have that user see your advert. I would bet it would be much closer to the $1-2 mark...
It is when it makes people change there purchasing behaviour to buy more fuel efficient vehicles
Exactly just look at this WSJ article to see how much FUD is surrounding this issue...

Also if it flies between the lines its wingspan could potentially cause a flashover..
Case in point, the Netherlands.
If so i plan on holding a LAN party down wind... make sure you bring nachos!
It would be awesome if the front seats faced backwards and you could have a table in between the seats!
I hope to god all of these things come true!

I was thinking the same thing! Like the philosopher and the engineer.. I am not trying to out run the lion i am trying to out run you!!
Agreed, PRS-300 is probably one of the best e-book readers out at the moment if all you want to do is read novels front to back.

I am an engineer and can sum up how we think in one sentence. "If you had thought about this as much as i have you would understand why i am right..."
How much is a company willing to pay to be able to deliver there advertisement to not only the right person, but the right person in the right place!
