  1. Re:This article is more than a bit flawed. on Leopard as the New Vista? · · Score: 1

The networking on Leopard is flawed. I work at the IT department for a small university. We, along with many close by colleges and universities, are having trouble with Leopard dropping network connections (both wireless and wired). It will work great until you turn off the computer or let it go into sleep mode. We had 3 Apple Engineers come to our campus last week and more or less said "Oh Crap" and said the problems will need to be addressed in future updates. Check Apple forums, this problem is being complained about all over. The premise that "it works for me, you must just be doing something wrong" is really flawed. Also, I myself have experience multiple crashes while using Leopard on multiple different computers.

The College I go to is a private College. We also have a internet filter on the student VLANs. Most of the reason for this filter is due to the fact that the college is christian and does not want to promote offensive material. (The college also has a no alcohol policy). If students do get the "Site Blocked due to ___" page for a legitimate site, they can send an email and get it unblocked (within 2 hours during the work week). Also an interesting fact from the network logs, before the filter was put in place 5 years ago, 63% of all student VLAN web traffic was p0rn. If you throw out moral reasons, does a college really want to pay for that much bandwidth for p0rn?

At my school a couple of my friends who liked to poke around on computers found the instant messaging function on the novell system. The system admins had no idea it was there, that the functionality had been turned on, how to monitor who started the IMs, and how to turn it off. When one of us would send a bunch of IM's it would give the person who received the IM the ability to IM anyone else logged into the system. The school administration could not control it and they threatend the whole school with disciplinary action.

Why is this a big deal now? IE 6 defaults to MSN search if you type in the wrong web address or put in a search term in the address bar. this did not create a monopoly for MSN. And these computer users who do not know how to change their homepage and who want to keep their homepage on MSN after they switch to firefox are the same people who will not know what the search bar at the top of the screen is for anyway. They will still type www.google.com in the address bar when they want to search for something. And why in the hell would MS want to default their search engine to google anyway? It is already possible for anyone who knows a little about software to change their default search engine. Isn't that enough. Why does MS need to cater to google? When will everyone stop thinking google is a company not out to make $$? Google just wants people to use their search engine so they can make more money. Soon google will be a monopoly just like MS and people will change their attitudes about google (hopefully).

Actaully arcing capacitors just mean that there is a design flaw in the capacitor, not the TV itself. This has nothing to do with the type of TV it is. All electronic devices have capacitors. An arcing capcitor just means that the insulating material inside the capacitor does not have a high enough insulation constant to prevent the amount of voltage in the capacitor from sparking. Either phillips overloaded the capacitors or the manufactorer of the capacitors did not spec them correctly.

If there is anything that is slightly wrong we medicate. We medicate because of little things in our lives. We medicate our livestock to the point where antibiotics don't work anymore because the diseases have become ammune to it. It all comes back to the fact that we need a quick fix.
