Actually, you should know "tan" trick before, along with a number of well known methods.
Integrals and differential equations are too hard to get the answer by sudden enlightenment. As a teacher one can't just write anything and make his students solve it during 60 minutes of exam.
As for Europe, of course they are already sustaining a great research community,; however, governmental control is too prevalent to keep the top tier talent there. They simply can not pay enough to keep top tier researchers from emmigrating to US universities. And so their growth is not as great as in the US.
So actually, if science in the US eventually would be made less and less important, the money flow would stop and being a scientist in US will not be as attractive as it is now. Then, these well-educated people will start emigrating to China or rather stay in Europe.
British voters demand a level of oratory from their politicians that US voters simply do not. That said, its an open question whether this means British politicians actually make better decisions for all their streetfighting smarts.
Whether or not, I like watching British politicians talking, especially Blair. Maybe it's just I have only occasional access to coverage of those Q&A sessions. Anyway, high level of oratory somewhat implies intelligence. Soon there are elections coming in my country and right now there are many TV debates. These people don't know how to express themselves in their own language:(. They don't know how to properly ask questions. They are unable to give clear answer or avoid it in a clever way. And yet, they are leaders of their parties.
You quote South Koreans. North Koreans have (or at least that's what they talk loud) quite different opinion. 50 years of indoctrination means two-three generations risen and educated in North Korean madness.
Some time ago I coupled Perl Eliza module with IM account registered as "Irene17". That module works only for English and my IM network was for non-English users so Irene would welcome anyone with message that she understands English only. I set her status to available for conversation and left it running for a week. That IM network has central directory of users so I was sure that sooner or later someone would find her.
Then I looked at logs of conversations. It turned out that there were people who actually talked with her for quite a while, struggling with English. The scheme was more or less the same. First some usual phrases to start a conversation, then trying to get some information about her and finally realizing that she is unwilling to tell anything about herself:) frustration with "Good bye" or some insults.
So, in a way, she has passed a Turing test, but the knowledge of English was poor on both sides.
Why can't a binary driver be accepted? I understand the implications. But seriously there are times when you need to look at the bigger picture.
I thought that Xorg's (or was it in XFree86 already) binary module loader was partially written to deal with this. So vendors could provide binary drivers that will just work. However I don't think that X developers would want to keep such driver within their project.
actually volcanic activity is the cause. A volcanic eruption will release 60,000 times as much co2 into the atmosphere in the space of said eruption as a major city releases in a year.
It's popular here to bash cellphones with cameras, but they are actually useful. Of course not as a device to make photographs, get a real camera for that.
I use camera in my cellphone mainly to take snapshots of useful information like public communication timetables, 1-2 pages of book in library instead asking for a copy of them, etc.
I agree with GP. I have followed discussions about udev vs. devfs and still I don't see how udev is much better than devfs. These discussions along with final reason for pushing udev were concentrated on devfs weaknesses rather than udev superiority. E.g. messy code, race conditions and lack of maintainer. That only told me that devfs was in bad shape, nothing more.
Devfs served me well. I'm not going to upgrade to a kernel without it anytime soon.
Yeah, it is a big mistake, but not because the reasons you just gave. It is mistake because the labour is not cheaper than in India. IT pros here will not run after $190/month salary. They are already better paid. You might hire some students without experience for that.
Creepy. The next thing that pen might do with my hand is to poke into my eye or try to strangle me, like Dr. Strangelove's hand: http://imdb.com/title/tt0057012/.
That's hardly unique to the States, and it's hardly a new thing.
Here, in the middle of Europe the reaction to introducing myself as a mathematician has three steps:
1. "You must be really smart to understand all this"
2. "I was never good at math"
3. "But what do you do for living?"
Unlike GP observations, the other side doesn't try to express superiority. However people who would be ashamed to admit that they don't know some classic literature titles are somewhat proud that they have no idea what a logarithm could be.
Theory of GP doesn't explain why Russians (who are not Asians) kick ass in maths and engineering. Because they do and other Slavic nations don't have as many famous names as Russians although languages are similar.
I completely agree. LOGO and BASIC can be used in immediate mode where computer responds to your action immediately. Couple that with LOGO graphics and as a result you get kids' attention. They can make computer do something, see the results immediately and tinker with it. I love LOGO:).
And to nitpick - mathematicians who cracked Enigma were from Poznan University (UAM), not Warsaw.

Read again my post. I never said 'honest'.
So how about you Europeans repay some of the war debt we forgave you after the Big One.
In my part of Europe Stalin told us that we don't need your dirty capitalist money.

Space travel should be a private enterprise, possibly assisted by government funds, but essentially researched and implemented by private companies.
What is the benefit for private enterprises to go to space? Where is their profit?

Unfortunately, the people who have the expensive SUVs aren't necessarily the ones who are most negatively impacted.
Everyone is affected. Transport is everything.
I don't think that graphics is the most important problem with latest games and many comments to the story you mentioned agree with that.
Two nitpicks:
- he was referning to EU, not Europe
- both of you listed Luxembourg
Some of reactions to the article are scary: http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0508 .3/1699.html

Yes, blame volcanoes. Blame dwarves, blame Canadians, blame communists. Blame anyone but yourself.

Yeah, we too.

Actually, it's not IR but the other side of spectrum - UV responsible for tanning.
