So.. kinda like if Google did nothing?

No, not kinda like that. The comparison being made was having a single, commercial organization have sole control, versus a (presumably) non-commercial organization composed of or otherwise beholden to a group of commercial organizations. Google does deserve some "first mover" credit, but so does most any company that establishes a monopoly early on. The issue being raised is the potential for them to abuse their sole provider status for these works and the desire to ameliorate that by spreading the responsibility and control around--no one is saying that it would have been better if Google hadn't done this at all.

What exactly makes Bing an inferior search engine? I generally use Google, but I've found, for example, in tracking down some old friends from high school and college that I was able to find them on Bing whereas I was not on Google or Yahoo. Also, I like Bing's video search better because the video "thumbnails" start to play when you mouse over them, which makes it easier to find what you're looking for. I know this article gives you a chance to take your daily shit on Microsoft, but maybe when you're done with your two minutes hate you might want to consider that Google hasn't done much to improve their core product lately so a little competition might not be a bad thing.

People have come to accept far greater abuse from their government than what Amazon did, so it's just a matter of time before this relatively trivial inconvenience is similarly accepted.

I don't know, genius, but maybe the fact that UN headquarters and a ton of foreign consulates are in NYC has something to do with it. How about hacking to get the itineraries and NYPD protection details for foreign heads of state and other dignitaries? What about getting the plans for coordinating with federal and state agencies in the event of a terrorist attack or other emergency? So maybe it's the international arena reaching into NYC, but either way the NYPD doesn't have to do anything outside of NYC to have international implications.

The fact is, though, that these models were stress-tested. Management just didn't want to hear that their money-making machine might come crashing down. Senior fixed income risk/trading experts like Michael Gelband at Lehman Brothers and Jeff Kronthal at Merrill Lynch were forced aside in 2007 because they made too much noise about the risks being taken. Guys like Roger Nagioff (a former equity--not fixed income--trader) at Lehman Brothers and Osman Semerci (a fixed income salesperson--not a trader) at Merrill Lynch were put in their place. A year later after the disaster started, Nagioff and Semerci were thrown out, and both Gelband and Kronthal were re-hired by their respective firms in an attempt to clean up the mess, but it was too late. The net result is that billions in easy money make it easy to ignore the models or easy to demand that only the "right" numbers be put into them.

  25. An unintentional goodbye email... on The Art of The Farewell Email · · Score: 5, Funny

The funniest "goodbye" email I saw occurred about 10 years ago. A guy down the hall from me was responding to a personal ad--probably in a "casual encounters" section. He gave, shall we say, a very elaborate physical description of himself. He also went into details about his various fetishes and sexual proclivities, as well as some choice moments from his sexual history. He also described exactly what he hoped to do with the person he was writing to, complete with various sexual acts and positions.

Unfortunately, when he clicked send, the mailer garbled the "to" line in such a way that it went to the company-wide email list. (The company-wide email alias was "world"--the email address he was sending to had "world" in it, and I assume he had accidentally put a space the middle of the email address, causing it to be mis-parsed.)

When the email hit everyone's inbox, there was a moment of silence on the whole floor, followed by phrases like "holy shit" and laughter. The last anyone saw of him was him ducking and half-running down the hallway with his backpack. He apparently thought he'd never be able to live it down, called HR later in the day to resign, and never showed up at the office again.
