You're not serious, are you? if you're developing for a large company you almost always have to support IE--like it or not. I've developed for several large companies and all heavily rely on Microsoft tools. Some of the users that I support have never heard of Firefox or are even aware that there is a rift between browsers. Their page needs to display on a browser *period*. CSS looks different on both so I HAVE to develop for IE because that what most users have and know.

  11. it's a shame but... on SGI Faces Bankruptcy · · Score: 1

I find it sad that SGI is going through this situation and I hope they recover from it. But a deeper, darker side is satisfied with this outcome. I am a 3D graphic artist and tried for years to get into situations where I could work with an SGI. Every employer that I approached the idea of doing graphics on an SGI said they were just too expensive and to produce a cheaper solution--I always did but was disspointed that SGI made themselves so expensive and seemed to be an instrument of the elite. I was an SGI shareholder and would ask them why they weren't making plans to mass produce or attain a more competetive market. They never answered. I guess they were too busy to deal with the little guy. You can pick an Indy now for about $100 on eBay and I don't want one anymore. It's ironic that they're in this situation

  12. Where it the mother of invention? on William Gibson on The Age of The Remix · · Score: 2, Interesting

If you think about it, we've been surreptitiously (I surreptitiously copied the word "surreptitiously" from Wired to impress you all) "remixing" technology thought recorded history. I'd hardly call it the nature of digital. Digital techniques have made it easier but the mother of invention still exists in digital media. We also shouldn't confuse inspiration with imitation; there is still a lot of innovation to enjoy. Actually, the only place lack of originality falls apart for me is in automotive distribution and mass production. I'm getting frustrated seeing the concept cars roll on to high-end auto shows only to end up with me sitting in a four-wheeled, archaic, internal combustion propelled vehicle. I want to drive the GM-Hywire. I completely understand that production costs and consumer demand dictate what manufacturers produce. But it still irritates me. kirk out.

Chill out holmes! I'm not confused... I know exactly what I'm talking about. You took what I said out of context. I like a good war just like the next war monger. In fact, I see tremendous advantages to wars. But we do spend alot of money on unnecessary political and social problems. Far too many for many to type here. Besides, we are coming up with other ways to put a satellite in orbit than just brute forcing it into the atmosphere. MONEY and CREATIVITY is required to see these things happen. Expand your level and experience and don't just see 'ROCKETS' as our only solution. There are many.

Of all the things in Science that need to work, I see space technology as something that we're so far behind due to wars, money and simple lack of interest or foresight. I saw myself living on a space station by now when I was a kid. Looks like I'll just be throwing in a 2001 Space Odyssey DVD instead.

When I first read this, I too thought MS was just retooling some form of CMD to compete with the new-found craze in command lines. But then I read about it on Wikipedia.org. It's considerably more than most of you are thinking. I'm not going to point out what it does here, go read about it(if you don't know what it is.). But how much of this is Microsoft bashing and how much of this is a legitimate analysis of the quality of computer user tools? I think we're seeing a world where things are starting to settle in to what they should be. Windows are going to be desktop machines, *nix are going to run servers(not IIS) and Macs will continue to win the hearts and minds of artists, universities and affluent kids. MS is not reinventing UNIX. They're simply providing *NIX-like tool for "Windows" developers'. It's called competition and it's good for us. It gives me yet another option to choose from. Welcome it! you don't have to use it if you don't like it.
