  1. Ungrateful on NATO Exercise Banned From Jamming GPS · · Score: 1

The US military developed, launched, and maintains GPS for military purposes. They allow everyone else to use it for FREE. Now those same users are screaming because the people who PAID FOR GPS want to turn it off for a few days in a limited area. "How dare they stop providing us free service! We demand they continue providing us free, uninterrupted service!"

  2. 16 Mexicans on What Does Your Dead Man's Switch Do? · · Score: 5, Funny

"Every Setpember, 16 Mexicans have a great party celebrating the revolution of Mexico but the fact is, that the revolution was not complete. " Is it the same 16 Mexicans every year? If you are one of only 16 Mexicans to attend this great party, you really need a Dead Man's Switch giving some one else your party spot!

  3. Re:Summary on Antispyware Shootout · · Score: 1

Of course the entire study is only valid for people who want to protect themselves from the 10 specific malware variants that were included in the test. Seeing as how there are tens of thousands of spyware programs in the real world, I don't think you can get an accurate representation of the solutions tested by using such a small sample size. Also note that even if the test results are representative of real world performance (I doubt it), you still would want to use more than one solution. 9 out of 10 doesn't sound so bad, until you realize that scales to 9,000 out of 10,000. Meaning you are still vulnerable to lots of bad stuff.

  5. Re:Before you complain . . . on The H-1B Swindle · · Score: 1

Of course manufacturing jobs are not the same as IT jobs, but why should the rules be any different for one than the other? Are you suggesting IT workers have more rights than manufacturing workers?

  6. Before you complain . . . on The H-1B Swindle · · Score: 1

I bet people raging against the "unethical" hiring of H1B's for less all behave the same way in other areas of life. All these companies are doing is what we all do when we buy something - look for the best deal we can get. Is it "unethical" for me to buy a PC with IC's made in Taiwan, where wages are lower for the fab workers, because it is cheaper than one made all in the US? Some people would probably say so, but how many /. ers complaining about low H1B wages wrote their post on a Taiwanese computer while drinking coffee grown and picked in Brazil and wearing a shirt made in China? Unless you are ready to put your money where your mouth is and start buying 100 % Made In The USA products regardless of the quality or cost, don't criticize the companies for taking the best deal available for labor.

  7. Sadly, this actually matters on How Would You Define a Planet? · · Score: 1

Does it really matter to scientists? I mean, really, regardless of how we define "planet", it is only semantics. The definition is not going to change a single scientific property of a single object in the universe. So I'd say from a purely scientific standpoint, it is irrelevant. On the other hand, from a PR standpoint, it could end up being very important. If I was an astronomer, I'd vote for a definition that is as broad as possible without over-doing it. Think of it - you are asking a funding agency, congress, etc for money to study object X. You are much more likely to capture the agency's (and the public's) attention if you say you are studying a planet. Should any intelligent society be ignorant of the planets in its own solar system? What will our galactic neighbors say! On the other hand, try getting funding to study "one of the several thousand objects beyond the orbit of Neptune". Just doesn't drum up the same level of excitement, does it?
