i've seen some of the worst, stupidest comments on this story.
while slashdotters know so much about technology, they sure don't know diddly about pretty much anything else!
#1 Anyone who's seen the clip knows it's not appropriate for prime time television. #2 Anyone who follows all the crap CBS does to get viewers knows that this segment of this show is just another segment of trying to stay the "most watched network" by using the classic "sex sells" method of marketing. After the Superbowl, the forged documents, and now this, it should be pretty obvious that CBS deserves every cent of fines it's getting. Make some QUALITY TV and QUALITY STORYLINES instead of just throwing in random boobies for some cheap ratings. #3 Bush != FCC. So just stop. Blaming Bush for every problem in the world only makes you sound like a complete vagina. #4 It's not just "right-wingers", it's everyone with small kids who likes to watch TV during primetime. #5 And what the hell is so wrong with the "right wing" organizations who complain about this stuff? All of a sudden when left-wing organizations like the ACLU complain about stuff they are doing it for our "civil liberties" that people like...hmmm...."BUSH IS TAKING OUR CIVIL LIBERTIES!!! OMG!!111"
Is it too much to ask that broadcast television be decent? Why do we have to hold our media to such low standards?
There was a reason that before now we didn't have all these problems with network censorship - not just because we were more conservative years ago, but because networks used to write good shows with good storylines and good characters. Now, they are just desparite to hold their own against cable and satellite, and will do it using any amount of indecency possible.
so they're going to promise us fast broadband so we can ignore the fact that the rest of the party is weak, divided, and doesn't even represent most americans on its views?
the democrats right now are having problems with prioritizing, even though the republicans aren't doing so well on their agenda, at least they have one.
broadband for everyone is great, but it's not what i'm looking for in a political party. FIOS is already availible - why should I wait 5 years for politicians to catch up?
although you could argue that M$'s business practices and methods of getting Windows on every OEM out there could be described as innovative, even if their products are not.
8 hours? that can be achieved with li-polymer, without the need to gas up your laptop.
especially since by the time this crap comes out, intel will have it's ultra low power core chips out (45 nm) for laptops that are supposed to get 8 hours or more battery life (late 06)
but since it's not Apple, it's not going to really sell well at all. Plays For Sure doesn't really get you anywhere, either. The device will only sell well if it truly is a good device and is marketed.
If I remember right, Samsung really wanted to make it big in the MP3 market. They had some statement a while ago saying they wanted to eventually be in Apple's position. This kind of stuff makes me think they truly are serious, but what they don't understand is that you can't just follow if you want to control a market, you absolutely have to lead.
Reading the article, and some comments that people have posted explaining why each point he has is wrong, I don't know why he even claims to be a tech writer when his comments are equivilant to those of local news anchors.
"LOL Apple switched to Intel chips and they is teh losing marketshare LOL they will switch to Windows, that will make their core market harpy!!11 ROFL!!11 and Teh switch to Intel means that Windows is on it. Cuse luinx dont run on teh intel iether!?!/111 DVORAK.ORG/BLOG DVORAK.ORG/BLOG DVORAK.ORG/BLOG!!!!!"
This should be "smart" and turn itself off for people with less than a certain amount of physical RAM. And should lower it's priority to other apps. i.e. if the person opens up Photoshop with a 50MB photo, Firefox should yield some of its extra RAM usage back to the system.
i'm going to go out of my way just to find an alternative to skype because I refuse to use the current generation's Intel chips (I like my processors fast and cheap)
seriously, there's no reason for the pretty 3D interface. It's getting pretty old now, it's almost bad that Apple keeps making their OS beautiful and run decently on old video cards (of course Apple has the decency to avoid integrated graphics). Because as long as Apple makes beautiful OSes, Microsoft will try to copy the features even though they don't realize that Apple is just making things look nice and it really isn't helping MS. i.e. Microsoft screws it up, it runs slowly on old machines, and just ends up looking goofy.
So unlike how Apple fans seem to think that Mac OS X is good for computing, it's actually bad because it takes Microsoft away from its best interface - Windows 95
How much did Betamax cost compared to VHS? Hey, guess what, it was more!
People don't care whether it's blu-ray or HD-DVD. They will buy whichever one is cheaper. Plus, HD-DVD has a better brand name by far. People know HDTV is better, what better accessory to their shiny HDTV than a DVD made just for HD! Hey, guess what, that would be HD-DVDs. DUH.
I honestly don't know which side to take on this issue. On the one hand, private organizations can pretty much do what they please. On the other, it's kind of shady.
When you think about it more, most forums ban this type of thing too. Most forums actually just ban the word "gay" because of how often it's used as an insult.
But right now...I am struggling to just care the slightest bit. I mean really, I could care less. I'm sorry gay people. I urge to assist in your cries for peaceful gaydom, but....I just....watching...star trek...
isn't this in a sense like selling out your own subscribers.
i.e. they don't like that the spammers are spamming, but if they are willing to pay them, then they really don't care?
that's why even free mail services beat out AOL (especially GMail) because they just try to filter out everything as spam.
If you're going to pay double the price of other dial up companies, shouldn't you get spam-less email? How can Netzero/Netscape ISP/PeoplePC afford to take in $10 a month and somehow paying $23 for AOL means not even getting the most basic of spam filters. $23 is approaching low-speed DSL rates.
If they don't want Google to use their articles...well...then don't put them on the internet!!
How is even possible to get mad about? If you put your web site on the internet, it's already free. Hey, look, if Google lists your news site on Google News, then you get more web hits! What more do you want? "Oh no, Google News ate my bandwidth!"
It's definatly fair use. I can't even see how Google can make money on the news section, with no sponsored links, NOTHING of the sort. Google has strange ways but I even can't see this one making them any cash at all.
Maybe, I dunno, they could READ the FAQ that Google has posted: I work for a news organization. Who can answer my questions regarding our news content and the Google News service?
Please contact us. We're pleased to work with individual publishers to ensure their content is appropriately represented in Google News.
If after all this newspaperdudes still hate Google News, they have one of two options. #1 Suck it. #2 Make their pages subscription based. Hell, the actual newspapers are subscription based. So if you REALLY want your FREE web page to NOT be seen on the internet, then by all means shut Google News down
i don't think so. it only encourages cell phone companies to keep their slow data networks.
but that isn't the primary reason for me. if my mobile device isn't capable of displaying full web pages (i.e. small laptop) then i see no point in a mobile device.
the two things I want to do on the go are 1. email/message 2. use the internet
of course, if you can do #1 (with java/javascript/dynamic pages/active content, etc) then you automatically can do #2
which is why i have yet to own a pda or smartphone. i think a 12inch ibook is small enough.
and some of those micronotebooks with pentium ms intrigue me. i think there's toshiba one with a 9 inch screen that still has 1024x768 resolution. and a full keyboard (well...a little small...but better than treo keyboards). seemed fast, affordable, too. it could even have a dvd reader if you just attatched a dock on the bottom which made it thicker. i think i'd rather have a brickish thing than a thin slab.

/.ers, but most people in america are very conservative, and i'm not just talking about republicans. the democratic party used to be strong because it had strong conservative roots, and most americans don't really feel like going to environmental rallys and flashing their tits all over the place and bitching and whining about implementing socialist welfares and public services.
i hate to break it to you
the democrats right now are having problems with prioritizing, even though the republicans aren't doing so well on their agenda, at least they have one.

How stupid can you get??
Ban harmless RF signals while the campus still gets radio signals, the earth's electromagnecic field (?), cordless phones, the list goes on.
And then allow students to use microwaves, place microwaves up to their heads in the form of cell phones, let them use TVs, etc.
I would transfer out of this college immediatly. Obviously the people there are STUPID and shouldn't be teaching anything. Ever.
Next thing they are going to ban IR signals in the form of banning remote controls and palm pilots. Cue confusing IR with UV.
I predict that the Ricky Whatever show will no longer be iTunes' most popular podcast after they start charging $7 a month for it.
Dang that's $84 a year. Is that really worth it?
i hate sony, but $900 is not going to be the MSRP, if anything it COULD be the manufactering cost
fun == pr0n
Come on Dvorak said it. Just ignore it.

You missed something very important.

Blu-ray...not so much.

Symantec plans a one-stop software service tying together anti-virus, anti-spam, firewall and a host of other PC optimization technologies...
so basically it's just a fancy name for Systemworks

how exactly can you profit on open source again?
browser marketshare statistics have been obselete for ages now.
it mattered when netscape vs. IE meant that if you chose one browser, half the internet wouldn't render properly.
but now it really really doesn't matter the slightest bit.
How can they even get mad about this?

in IE, if you choose in advanced settings to never search for web pages from the address bar, it will add the HTTP for you
i'll take the $100 open linux powered laptop thank you very much.
hmm an underpowered limited computer that plugs into a TV...wouldn't this be called WebTV 3?
i don't think so. it only encourages cell phone companies to keep their slow data networks.

here's a cheap, easy solution.
make another category of book...
fiction
non-fiction
and partial-fiction
or some other catchy title.
simple, non consumer-deceptive solution. this category simply means that facts weren't checked.
