Well, a simple Netcraft query tells us that the website itself is Microsoft IIS probably on Windows NT. Part of the basic Microsoft ecommerce package is SQL Server, so I'm speculating that was the database that was compromised.
There definitely should be some litigation regarding this case. 10,000 to 20,000 possible credit card numbers?!? That is a lot of people and now they have to go thru the hassle of cancelling their credit cards and getting new ones.
This is Western Union, for crying out loud. A company that makes money by helping people transfer money. You think they would take better safety precautions and use encryption on their database. Or better yet, have the database server offline without a connection to the Internet.
Nobody in the "scene" has been able to find a way around the WON authorization for Half-Life mutiplayer games. Always think twice before you say "all".
Why is the above comment moderated to 5? Is it because it's in bold?
If you guys would READ the article and USE your brains, you would know that just because something Bad (tm) happens, you can't sue. There has to be negligence or malice involved.
Slashdot posting a link within the context of a discussion for its readers is not malice or negligence. Nobody is going to fscking sue for "slashdotting".
Network Solutions, however, may be sued for negligence by Nike because they were directly liable for the domain hijacking.
This Greg Smith guy doesn't exactly have the best credibility in the world with his Amazon.gr stunt. However, if he can prove damages (in this case financial) and Nike's liability, he will win the case. If THAT happens, don't be suprised to see Nike go after Network Solutions.

Um, I dunno about the UK, but the Right to Live (tm),is a genuine right in the United States Constitution. IIRC, "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness".
So your analogy doesn't work. I don't give two shits about what you do with your gun as long as you don't interfere with my basic rights and don't break the law.

That's absolutely correct. If you want to stop mp3s, stop people from making them and downloading them. Don't sue Napster, it's just a piece of software that is used for "good" and "evil" purposes. If you're going to sue Napster, sue every FTP client, AIM, ICQ, Scour and Hotline.
Please no more gun analogies. They really don't apply.

You said "MERs" but probably meant MREs, as in Meals Ready to Eat. Or in real military lingo, "Meals Readily Exitable". You make your own conclusions about the fiber content.
A little boy was standing in front of a mirror in the restroom at John F. Kennedy Airport, when in walked a Marine staff sergeant, dressed in his dress blues. The little boy turned to the Marine and said, "Wow! Are you a Marine?"
The Marine replied, "Why, yes I am, young man. Would you like to wear my hat?"
"Boy, would I!," said the little boy. He took the hat and placed it on his head and turned to admire himself in the mirror.
As he was looking in the mirror, he heard the door open and through a ray of bright light, a man entered the room. But, this was not just a man -- he was more than a man. He was an Airborne Ranger.
The little boy turned and went over to the soldier. As he approached him, he could see the reflection in his boots. His eyes widened as he stared up at the soldier's chest full of medals and combat ribbons. He tried to speak, but he couldn't. Finally, he took a deep breath, and managed to say, "Excuse me, Sir. Are you an Airborne Ranger?"
The Ranger replied with a thunderous voice, "Why yes, I am!! Would you like to shine my boots?"
The little boy smiled, and said, "Oh, no sir!! I'm not a Marine. I'm just wearing his hat!"
That is an excellent tactic. Especially when spammers have toll free phone numbers. I call them up and yell as loud as I can asking them to stop sending me spam. Then I call again and repeat for a few times.
For the spammers that don't have toll free numbers, I use ThinkLink.com. They had a promotion a while back that gave you 200 free minutes of long distance as long as you dialed thru the ThinkLink system. I put it too good use with more verbal harassment of spammers.
Sometimes, violence or the threat of violence, *is* the answer.
New, powerful hardware?!? Too many (Microsoft) programmers rely on this excuse...which leads to sloppy code (Hey, who cares how many debug lines are left in the release canidate, most hard drives these days are 10 gigs!) or don't worry about cleaning up the memory, most users have 128 MB of RAM! Want to impress me? Write an OS that makes my Pentium 60 useful again - not only as a server.
It's true. Nobody has developed anything for the Visor's expansion port. I feel sorry for all the people who got a Visor thinking they could do cool stuff with new hardware coming out. It'll never happen.
Handspring isn't stupid. They saw how the Palm IPO went and they know Transmeta's Crusoe is going to revolutionize the PDA/Wireless market. Gotta cash out while the going is good.
I would not recommend anybody buy ANY PDA for the next 6 to 12 months because you never know what new gadgets will come out using the Transmeta chip.
The Transmeta Crusoe chip is quite powerful and consumes very little power and it's possible we can see PDAs with color screens, voice recording, mp3 playing and have the battery life of a Palm (weeks, not hours).
I just want to say this is a great post. Honestly, there is nothing else I can say. Sports may not be the most beneficial advancement to human evolution, but both LA and Houston had a chance to keep their respective teams.
Interesting how Houston will be the next location for a NFL expansion team.
I have to agree with you here. However, it's also compounded by the problem that most geeks are not that social and never have been. This leads to a lack of developed social skills and just prevents them from forming relationships. I read on Slashdot before that most technical and engineering people score as Introverts on some personality test. I bet that have something to do with it.
In addition, some geeks don't view relationships as valuable as their career or computers. It's kind of weird, but I know it happens. I do think there is hope however. The older geeks that I know and work with are all married so maybe something does happen to geeks when they get older.
