    It is standard practice. Charge as much as you can possibly get away with and plea bargain down from there.

    Intent matters, she shouldn't get off scott free but an outcome that leads to many hours of community service with the charges expunged afterword would be appropriate. As far as the expulsion goes, again, 10 days suspended would be more appropriate if this student hadn't ever caused trouble before but the trend toward "zero tolerance" is loved by school administrators because it removes from them any responsibility.

    I have lights on timers, light sensors, motion activated. I close and lock my doors at night. I have a small dog that can bark up a storm. I have a fence around my back yard. If all that isn't a deterrent or one of those fail, I have a gun in a similar type safe mentioned above to fall back on as a last resort but hope it never comes to that.

    I have a S&W pistol with a magazine disconnect and it has no requirement to dry fire to rack the slide or anything. If the magazine is removed, the trigger is just squishy and doesn't do anything (It has a safety which acts as a de-cocker), other than that everything else is the same. You do have to put in an empty magazine to dry fire but I don't see that as a major disadvantage.

  13. Re:Gun Safes on Using Technology To Make Guns Safer · · Score: 1

    "Note: magazine safeties prevent you from clearing the firearm, which means you can't guarantee it's not loaded."

    I have a Smith and Wesson model 3913. It has a "magazine safety" which makes it not fire when the magazine is removed. It doesn't prevent someone from racking the slide to eject the round in the chamber. It is a trade off. The use I could see is that in the even that a person gets into a physical struggle over the weapon, rather than fighting for possession of the weapon, one could opt to try to eject the magazine instead, once done you can let the other person take the gun and when they try to use it against you and find it doesn't work, you can use that moment of confusion to take the magazine and do what you will (throw it away, stomp on it to deform it, run away with it, whatever). The disadvantage would be in the case of a tactical reload (reload with a round still in the chamber) the weapon is disabled until the next magazine is installed.

    I personally like the magazine disconnect, I think the advantage outweighs the disadvantage in my situation.

    Do they offer the 3-way LED bulbs yet? I'm not talking about dimmable ones (I know they exist), but rather the ones that work in sockets designed for these kinds of incandescent bulbs, providing three levels of light. My floor lamps are all of this kind, and I use each of the settings in different situations.

  19. Re:Competitive does not require equal on Toyota Abandons Plans For All-Electric Vehicle Rollout · · Score: 1

    15-20 mins is not competitive;

    The prior poster said it was "acceptable given the other advantages of an electric vehicle" and I would agree on that. If an EV was able to be fulling charged with say, 100 miles in 15 minutes (perhaps at a specialized speed charging station), that would be acceptable given that most other charging could be done during downtime at home or work. It is a trade off I think most would live with since filling up at the quick charge station would be an occasional thing. What makes EVs so impractical is that the limited range makes the vehicle effectively unusable for any driving that would exceed the limited range so even a day trip to another city just out of range becomes problematic (for me, a beach trip is 150 miles, not feasible with a EV100 but quite doable if there were a quick charge option about halfway).

    Obviously, the other issues you mentioned, the voltage needed, the limited number of plugs are an issue too but ultimately, to make the EV as flexible as a normal car, the ability to quick charge on trips must be available.

    You wake up in the morning and find yourself back to back in bed with an unconscious violinist. A famous unconscious violinist. He has been found to have a fatal kidney ailment, and the Society of Music Lovers has canvassed all the available medical records and found that you alone have the right blood type to help. They have therefore kidnapped you, and last night the violinist's circulatory system was plugged into yours, so that your kidneys can be used to extract poisons from his blood as well as your own. [If he is unplugged from you now, he will die; but] in nine months he will have recovered from his ailment, and can safely be unplugged from you.

    Do you have a moral obligation to spend nine months hooked up to this person to keep them alive because you were selected to loan out your kidneys by a third party?

    The simple answer would be that you have no obligation because you were forced into the situation that is described. With the exception of Rape, the pregnant woman chose to engage in activity that could lead to pregnancy, one could call that consent given for what ever pregnancy may result.
