Someone has already explained that the arctic icecaps will have little effect on sea-levels because floating ice displaces exactly it's volume of water. But I have heard (and correct me if I'm wrong here) that the rising temperatures could have a huge effect on sea levels, because as the water heats it expands a little. Multiply that by a gajillion times and you'll see venice sinking quicker than a lead zeppelin!

The telecommunications industry is huge, and there is a ton of money to be made. That being said though, it's so easy (comparitively) to get into this business that it would be foolish to invest in a single company. I think it will be just like what happened to AOL. People will go with the cheaper provider eventually, and there is just too many competitors (there will be many).

This site could be some random pop-up from a spyware program that asks the user to then write down the word in the Captcha image. The bot then uses the entry from the Spyware affected person to enter the original website.

  24. Re:My Prediction on Sony and Toshiba Give Up On Unified DVD Format · · Score: 1

What? Maybe the first 2 times you play the tape on a super-expensive VCR. Most people would rather just do it the easy way and pay $3 more for the DVD. Kind of like LPs vs. music CDs. Sure a record CAN sound better, but CDs are so much easier which is why they caught on.

First 2 times? I have 15 year old tapes that look just fine actually. Sure my VCR costed me more than my DVD player but it is also 10 years old, and I've gone through 3 DVD players in the last 5 years. And, I've gotten tapes for only $3 (not $3 more), when the DVD would have costed $20. Used DVDs would have also been less likely to play than the used tapes I've bought.

So, while I'm not saying VHS tapes are better than DVDs, they're still useful.

Oh, and who else is hates the fact that DVD players generally suck for fast-forward/rewind?

  25. Re:My Prediction on Sony and Toshiba Give Up On Unified DVD Format · · Score: 2, Interesting

I even know a well-off kid with HDTV and all of the latest computer "toys" who still buys VHS movies for some stupid reason. Besides price I see no difference.

Then wouldn't the stupid reason be the price? I still buy VHS because the movies are always cheaper, and with a good VCR there is little difference in quality.
