Did anyone check if the USB keys had a distribution license that would permit the songs to be hosted on web sites? Was there a license that said they couldn't? If NIN, their label, lawyers, etc didn't want these tracks to be leaked out, they should have made it explicitly clear what their wishes were.
But also for Americans. More and more of us are going to schools, universities, and workplaces that install and use content filtering/firewalls. Where I work most of/. isn't blocked (obviously), but curiously enough, the games and ask sections of slashdot are blocked.
Most blogs and web forums are blocked as well. The sad thing is, a major part of my job is research, and more and more important information is coming via those venues (at least in my field), and other sites that being blocked.

Being a hacker is not a punishable offense.

Not yet anyways. But being a tinkerer and an "outside-the-box" thinker, non-comformist, etc is certainly NOT something being encouraged today, vis-a-vis things like the DMCA, the Patriot Act, etc, etc.
Kinda sad actually.
The experience we get from a mission to asteroids could serve us well in the event that one heads towards earth. I mean, Bruce Willis isn't getting any younger.
While Linus didn't save a sinking schoolbus of children from drowning, I believe they he is being deemed a hero for two reasons. The first is that his contributions to technology has empowered a multitude of people to go on and do good works, like, for example, the "one laptop per child" project.
The second is that Linus is a hero via context. Linus is a symbol, a figurehead of the FLOSS movement and ideals, even if he himself doesn't embrace EVERY aspect of it.
in the right hands, i.e., that of adults, myspace is actually quite useful.
At 26, I simply posted minimal information on my page, and I don't do the obnoxious, barf-all-over-the-screen personal page.
But it is easy to keep in touch with old classmates, and friends in various parts of the country.
I think you're underestimating the momentum this monster has. I mean it really is the easiest way to "social network" right now.
Even if something better comes along, it would have to be VERY appealing to slay the beast. I mean look at how long AOL overstayed their welcome.
Genius - Used to be someone who was consistantly and spectacularly intelligent (Einstein, Fermi, etc). Now it is anyone who happens to figure something out or is relatively smart. "My 3 year old can hum the national anthem, isn't he a genius?"
Or Genius: the stoner-esque dudes at the apple store that fix iPods
It really has lost all meaning.
And those wanting to blame Republicans, Bush, the Devil, et al. are just plain wrong. WE handed over our freedoms and liberty in the name of security and protection from the "terrorists." The cruel irony is that Franklin warned us us centuries ago that trading one for the other results in having neither.
At least I got to live somewhat free for a few of decades.
Oh really? How about the times congress has tried to sneak in things like the broadcast flag?
And you're assuming there's no value in discussing the issue, debating it, etc.
Were it not for/., I wouldn't have heard of this bill (I don't read "Wired" and this will probably slip under the mainstream media's radar, probably intentionally so).
Yeah, myspace pages can get pretty bad, although many of us have been using CSS techniques and div overlays to make the pages decent. And for me, being on myspace is more of a matter of convenience. I can send a bulletin out to friends all out once quickly (and vise-versa), and if I meet someone, I can tell them to send me a "myspace." Little commitment or risk, and a universal medium. Pls I don't have my cell phone number out there to the world.
Well, you can get a Star Trek Skin for it, and getting a ringtone to match would be trivial.
Of course, what I really want is a bluetooth communicator a la ST:TNG. I'm sure all the ladies would be impressed when I wear that bad boy in public.
I think certain extensions, like adblock or anti-phising for example, would be something useful for dear old mom and dad to include in the base installation. They won't need or want greasemonkey, etc.
But yes, when they start loading it up with skype, etc, they will have lost me as well. Then again, couldn't someone always fork it and start a minimalist version?
The only thing I could see this being helpful for are cases where the media is unpopular and there's a fair use need to circumvent the DRM.
Or it's usefulness lies in the fact that it shows people are going to continue to "break" (or fix, depending on your POV) DRM. People want free music, but there are a lot of people that are willing to pay for music (no really) but want to be unemcumbered by DRM and make the process of transferring music to their MP3 player to work, etc.
Obviously anyone that is going to break this DRM is already paying a monthly serivce fee for access to music. If they didn't want to pay for the music, then yes they'd be using bittorrent sites that host music.
was OSS about marketshare?
If you build it, they will come.
In my heart I've convinced myself this is true. And when I show non-nerdy friends Ubuntu running on my computer, they are impressed. Perhaps Some distros (like ubuntu) will have enough good things going for it to increase adoption (even dual boot, toe-in-the-water users), that it will compel support.
Oh well, one can dream and fight the good fight regardless.

If you or I "pretext," then its hacking and social engineering and we get thrown into pound-me-the-ass prison.
oops, should have checked if the preview button still worked. ;)

let me know when they can do "free bird."

On Slashdot? Unpossible.
Clunkier than an ipod. Crippled wifi. Lame.

'Nsync cameos as red shirts?

I'd invest in XFGW, but I have my money tied up in helping a former government minister in Nigeria get his millions out of a bank.
actually they do sometimes catch them.
In all seriousness, I'm actually considering ditching my iPod mini for an iAudio
