    Sure they can take off and land. But the the "landing" is of a separated dragon capsule and the two stages of the falcon 9, and there will be a full check and refuel before take off again. Whereas it is possible that the dragon capsule could land on the moon with enough fuel to take off again, being guaranteed to be able to stop and re-ignite will probably be more than a minor tweak.

    Also, the current dragon capsule has an emergency parachute system will be retained as both a redundant backup and for water landings. They would have to be confident enough to work without this backup.

    I was expecting to read one of the usual stories. The proportion of men to women wasn't 50/59 so they must be sexist; the guys don't ask look comfortable taking to me; or the guys are too familiar when talking to me. I have to say though this sounds like a good engineer facing real problems of discrimination.

    Why this vanity project, whereas the same effort could probably save dozens of species from becoming extinct? If anything it will be used to argue against conservation; people with economic interests will say "we can always bring them back" just the same as they say "we can use technology to cool the climate" now.

    I take it he's campaigning for the reinstatement of the red flag law. Seriously how fast does he think cars should be allowed to travel of accelerate? If all were limited to 20mph then almost all accidents would be survivable (though daresay you'd get some drunk idiots driving into rivers or off cliffs even at that speed).

    Is there a good reason I should trust the authors of "WhatsApp"? And even if I did trust them, is there any measure of assurance that they couldn't be compelled to give up my data?

    I think that there is a good deal of assurance. WhatsApp use the Signal Protocol which is open source and provides end-to-end encryption so that they never see your messages. They are using a closed-source version of this protocol, so you could worry that they have some modifications or back-doors. However because people have used third-party clients (which is against the terms and conditions) this seems unlikely, but still possible.

    If you are really paranoid use the open-source Signal encryption software, verify the code, and compile yourself. You could even run your own server (the code to this is also open source), but having verified that the client gives end-to-end encryption this is not necessary.

    Because end-to-end secured email is a pain, why not just use WhatsApp or one of the other messaging systems which provide end-to-end encryption?

    I think the point is that it is not end-to-end encryption, and it could be intercepted by mail providers either end, or by governments with access, etc.

    Elon Musk didn't say that a call for unionisation was morally outrageous. He said that for someone to be "paid by the UAW to join Tesla and agitate for a union" was morally outrageous. There's quite a difference

    So that clutch that needs replacing at the tune of $700-$1500 including labor isn't part of the drive train?

    PS: All my cars are manuals too.

    I've never had to replace a clutch. That's probably partly luck, partly living in a relatively cold climate and partly learning to drive in a car without synchromesh gears , so I am in the habit of matching the engine speed to the gear speed before bringing the clutch up, - the most I have done in one car is 130,000 miles.

    $100 per kw hour is $3,000 for a Nissan Leaf battery. Is that production or retail? If the expected battery lifetime is 8-10 years then that is a lot to spend on an old vehicle

    Overlooked by seemingly everyone who makes this argument, is that using the current cost reduction curve stated in the article, it will cost 80% less in another 8-10 years to replace. Somehow I think $600 will be manageable. And don't tell me you've never replaced a drivetrain component on your ICE car in 8 to 10 years (damn transmissions...)

    Honestly no, never. I have replaced coil springs, shock absorbers, wiper motors, as well as many tyres, brake pads and bulbs. could be because I always get manual transmissions. I have had a big end bearing go in an old banger when I was a student, but basically that was the end of that car - I could get an equivalent car for less than the repair bill.

    And if you go to the security section in chrome and check the slashdot cert you see "and an obsolete cipher (AES_256_CBC with HMAC-SHA1)" ! So slashdot should really update to a better than sha1 certificate to be really secure!

    That may be the reason that they hid it. Naive users might get worried about this sort of warning. Of course SHA1 is still good enough for sites like Slashdot, nobody is going to use the immense computational time required to break SHA1 so that they can mess up your karma.
