  1. Regardless... on New GPU Testing Methodology Puts Multi-GPU Solutions In Question · · Score: 4, Interesting

As an owner of a Crossfire setup, it's obviously not a 2x improvement over a single card; however, it's also a marked improvement over a single card. When I first set up this rig (August), I had problems with micro-stutter.* Now, though, after AMD's newer drivers and manually limiting games to 59 FPS, I don't see it anymore; games appear smooth as silk.

At a mathematical level, it may not be a perfect solution, but at a perceptual level, I am perfectly satisfied with my purchase. With that said, buying two mid-line cards instead of one high-end card isn't a good choice. Only buy two (or more) cards if you're going high-end.

*I was initially very disappointed with the Radeons. That's no longer the case, but I will probably still go nVidia the next time I upgrade, which hopefully won't be for years.

All games that have the budget for graphics these days are targeted at console limitations. I can't really see any reason to spend that much on a graphics card, except if you're a game developer yourself.

I'll bite. I've owned both the PC and PS3 version of Skyrim. The PC version has better graphics, hands down, and that's well before you start loading up all sorts of visual enhancement mods. So no, games aren't just targeted at console limitations, at least not in the texture arena; I'm not sure if Skyrim PC uses different models with a higher poly count.

The original trilogy was more kid-friendly, but it was also adult-friendly (though the ewoks were pushing it). I don't think it's unreasonable at all that adults should expect to enjoy the films.

For the record, though, I think that $60 would be a reasonable price, so long as it has full compatibility and the majority of Office's desktop features.

    2. "KiB" is much more annoying to type than "KB". I would have preferred some sort of alternate notation, e.g. "sKB" for SI kilobyte and "bKB" for binary kilobyte.

The main frustration I have with the two competing standards is with Apple. Apple adopted base10 measurements a while back. This has the advantage of having marketing measurements and OS measurements matching up (though I'm actually unsure of what "4.00GB" means in terms of system memory in Activity Monitor--is that base10 or base2?). It also has the annoying disadvantage of having the OS X measurements and the measurements of every other app and OS out there not matching up.

Even more bizarre is when you get into the concept of fate. If everything is preordained (as I understand many/most/all Muslims believe; someone correct me if wrong!), then that means Allah willed the "blasphemy" to happen. In that case, fighting against the "blasphemy" would itself be blasphemy, as you would be acting against Allah's will (of course, he willed you to fight it, which means we get into an insane feedback loop).

The problem is, for every person who has problems with a new release, you have ten or more who have none. I've bought every major release of OS X on day one since Tiger came out, and never had issues. I've even ran the developer previews of Lion and Mountain Lion--again, without issues. Ditto for iOS 6. Waiting for an update may be somewhat prudent, but it isn't necessary in almost all cases.

I thought the M$ thing was cool when I was a kid. Then I realized that Apple (and later Google) were all about making profits, too, so the whole $ thing seemed rather juvenile. No company is perfect, either with their products or their business tactics.

Anyway, to the topic on hand: As far as I know, it's a relatively uncommon issue. I haven't noticed any battery problems with my iPhone 5; I still recharge it every other night, and LTE/3G seem the same speed as usual. I'm not claiming that some people don't see the problem, but that it may not be as big a deal as the article/summary/headline makes it out to be. As is common for modern /., the headline itself makes it seem as if it's a problem with every iPhone running the new update. Also keep in mind that people will post complaints, and be more vocal about them, more often than they will post compliments.

For those who are experiencing this issue, though, I hope Apple fixes it soon.

I'm using it right now (though posting from my desktop). Honestly, it's a lot faster than the old site, and navigation is more friendly to touch devices. Most importantly, comments load better than before. With that said, two things bother me about it:

    1. The aesthetic is completely different from the desktop site, to the point that I wouldn't know it's Slashdot if it didn't say so at the top. This isn't a huge deal, but brand recognition is important.
    2. The article summaries are shortened on the front page, and you have to tap the headline in order to load the whole thing along with contents. This breaks up the site's flow and makes it harder just to peruse articles. Take, for instance, the following excerpt:

The shortened summary offers nothing of value to me; the headline is actually much more informative. What I think needs to happen is either enable full, unshortened summaries, or write a summary of the summary for mobile devices. One of those options is silly, the other is reasonable.
