  1. it's good to be able to choose... on Eazel's Nautilus Preview 1 Released · · Score: 1

wow, I have been waiting for this release for quite a while, basically because I wasn't willing to grab the stuff from cvs to see it... the screenshots look very promising and I sure hope that the eazel guys get nautlilus "done" in time to be released with GNOME 1.4.

When I first started using Linux in 1996 or so, I installed SuSE 4.4.1 and was about to puke when I saw fvwm2 appearing on the screen. Back then I used a Mac as my primary computer and there was a reason for that: the GUI was the best around. Working with Linux was awkward in the beginning, since I wasn't used to using a shell and typing in commands by hand. When GUIs for Linux became better, I bought a better Linux box and then decided to use it as my primary computer... yes, and I am used to the shell by now... I am so used to it, that I never really bother to use gmc for anything, although I must say that I find it easier to remember where what icon is than remembering names.

I like being able to choose between different ways of using my files, I can either use ls and the like, I can use gmc, that KDE filebrowser (don't use KDE, so I forgot the name...), soon I can use nautilus, or I could get the latest efm stuff from the enlightenment cvs and use that... :) and pretty soon we'll have 3 desktop environments that offer good filebrowsers, GNOME, KDE and Enlightenment 0.17. That's what I like. I can choose.

Ever since I had my first "real" computer, an Apple Mac IIvx, I tried to stay away from M$ software where ever I could. Except for Word 5.1 for Mac there was no application that I found usable. There is a reason why I am using Linux now: I don't want to deal with the M$ GUI concept, and I don't need their overpriced buggy software either.

I have high hopes for apps that are currently being developed, like evolution, gnucash, gnumeric, gimp and the "new" GNOMEified star office, just to name a few, that there will be no need for M$ products running on Linux.

I can't wait to get a palm in the colors of my favorite soccer team, complete with a soccer league timetable add-on, the possibilities to expand are seemingly endless for palm :)

although I have to say that my palm III still does the trick and I don't really see the need to update, unless I have a few hundred DM lying around, but then I guess I'd buy a visor, they look kewler. :)

  9. nice tools! on HelixCode Releases Admin Tools · · Score: 1

wow, I like those tools. they are not really that fancy, but still, they do their job. I'd love to see a whole suit of gtk/gnome based admin modules that let me easily configure my system, without any dependency on the config tools that came with the distro.

the new SuSE 7.0 will feature "a much improved" yast2 that let's you configure lot's of stuff on your box. unfortunately, the GUI sucks, the QT stuff looks ugly and the whole thing is a bitch to use. :( this helixcode stuff looks much nicer and has a better interface.

yes, I want easy admin tools for the common stuff and yes, I could also use vi to edit some text-files. But Linux should be about choice, and I think it is great to have a good set of admin tools around so you can decide what to use to get a job done.

I think it is interesting to see that finally lawyers come to an understanding what the net and information techonlogy can mean to them: a wonderful playground where they can find easy prey. I sure hope they try to sue every company that is offering samba support, because I could imagine that IBM and HP could get seriously annoyed by this and get their lawyer amanda to squash their opponents... or else samba has to be renamed... or stopped. I wouldn't mind, I never saw the need for windows connectivity anyways... hehe...

  12. SuSE 7.0 is more like 6.4.1 on SuSE 7.0 · · Score: 3

The latest SuSE release doesn't have any new features that would justify the version number 7. There are a few things that are quite new, like the fact, that you can now get a professional and a personal edition, the personal edition costing as much as the "normal" edition used to cost, whereas the professional version will cost DM 129 (compared to DM 89). The other new thing is "a much improved" yast2, which in my opinion is completely useless. I like yast a lot and use it on a daily basis, but I see no need for a badly designed graphical version of it. Have you ever tried selecting a bunch of packages with a doubleclick for each item? that's fun... my wrist starts hurting whenever I think about that... the graphical installer sucks compared to Caldera's, which is really smooth, has awesome hardware detection and let's me configure things while the installation is running... yast2 in comparison has a GUI that is non-intuitiv, the hardware-detection misses stuff Caldera detects and the installation process takes longer.

what else is new? hmm, a KDE2beta snapshot, a patched XFree 4.0, other than that nothing that I could remember...

Personally, I couldn't care less whether they have a personal and a professional version out, since I always just install the stuff via NFS from fpt.gwdg.de, which is the local mirror and is always up-to-date when it comes to SuSE. I understand that SuSE tries to package a distribution that is geared towards the enduser or beginner and one package for developers or "powerusers", but I think a lot of customers will be confused by the new packaging... oh yeah, speacking about packaging, I wish they would finally get a real marketing team and then get rid of this crappy logo, the weird mathematical figures and the ugly colors.

But I don't understand this major jump in version numbers, for there is not much new in both of the distros... obviously, kernel 2.4 is still missing, KDE 2 is still not done, etc. 7.0 sounds important and like a big step, but all SuSE has to offer is their yast2 graphical install and admin tool, which is a pain in the wrist to use...

hmm, caldera is still at 2.4, does that mean they are about 1/3 as good as Red Hat and SuSE?

So I guess I'll buy the G400 soon, as I really want to get rid of all the M$ crap that I still have on my hard-drive.

NVIDIA is not only moving slow in terms of support for Xfree86, they are also moving into the wrong direction. I was pleased when I heard about the SGI, VA Linux and NVIDIA deal, but it seems that they have not been very productive.

I want open source drivers for Xfree86 4.0 and I want them now! Ever since I first bought my TNT I kept hearing promises about better drivers for Xfree86 and I am pretty much fed up with NVIDIA.
