Cynical-C has done a few of these, where he posts one star reviews of commonly accepted "greats". His list includes not only books, but also movies like Jaws, and albums like Revolver. Amusing stuff.
It's a combination of many reasons (some covered here already), and recently there were studies released that showed a few.
The first is from a month or so ago, and found that while both boys and girls are lacking in math compared to the rest of the world, girls are much harder hit.
In elementary school, girls do as well as or better in math than boys. In middle school, Mertz and her colleagues suggest, girls with an inclination for math begin to lose interest and fall behind, mostly due to peer pressure and societal expectations. Throughout middle and high school, social stigma and lack of appropriately challenging educational opportunities for the mathematically precocious becomes a hard reality in most American schools. Consequently, gifted girls, even more so than boys, often camouflage their mathematical talent to fit in well with their peers.
It falls back on the whole societal stereotype that math, and by extension science, isn't cool and certainly not cool if a girl does it.
As for women leaving, The Athena Factor is a study to read. They researchers found that hostility of the workplace culture is the most important factor driving women out, with "63% of women in science, engineering and technology have experienced sexual harassment." The whole thing is worth a read, and can give some insight into why women don't stick around in IT or any science career.
I'm lucky in that I've worked in the public sector for most of my IT career, and I've not seen as much as what the study found.
He was having issues with PayPal and had to suspend the softcover sales to get the process to work with the hardbacks. He has posted that once he gets the hardbacks shipped he will start up paperback sales again.
Our toddler is terrified of anything that has human qualities and talks, and she's had the TME around for almost a year now. She can play with it, as long as we're in the room with her and it's turned off, but as soon as she hears it, she will run to one of us (although she loves watching Elmo on TV). Same thing with a doll that talks. Once I accidentally knocked it and it started singing, and even though she was in the other room taking a bath, she was scared and had to be reassured that it wasn't coming in.
It's just amazing to me that it's only things that look human, or at least human-ish with a face. We think she's just got some kind of knowledge about fearing robots for when the Robot Overlords come.
I never went for the Joel vs Mike debate, instead breaking it down into times before and after TV's Frank and later, Clayton Forrester's departure. To me, Mary Jo just wasn't as good as Frank and Trace, although there were a few good Pearl episodes. The episode when Crow's voice changed, there was a good back and forth with Mike though. (Yes I know Mary Jo had been with them for a while, but in the Evil role, just not the same.)
My Vista laptop was frustrating me with its freezing and blue screens (driver issues!) and I wanted to try something different. I did try Ubuntu, but found that Mandriva was easier for me to adapt to using. As an IT worker who deals with Windows and fixing problems all day, I just wanted to go home and have my personal computer Just Work(TM), so I didn't have to spend almost my whole waking time trying to fix computer problems. I do have a hubby and 1.5 year old who also need my attention!
Anyway, the install went great, even getting the wireless working was just a matter of pointing to the correct.ini file for my model of wireless adapter. The only problems I've had were getting qComic working (turns out I had to install unrar for it to read the file types I had) and figuring out other Linux specific things I'm just not used to. My next project, when I have time, is to get Civ IV running under Wine. I found a great how-to, and it looks easy, just a few steps.
I still have to use my XP desktop for a couple of things, mostly to synch my Nike+ Nano data and for iTunes. But my long term goal is to strip out the DRM from the few songs I bought there and use my laptop exclusively. Although I'll still have to use the desktop for the Nike+ stuff, it will be just my backup/file storage machine.
Long story short, I hope the next distro of Mandrake does keep impressing me.
I pay tax everywhere I get my food. Grocery store or restaurant, it doesn't matter. The amount varies, depending on what the city's local rate is, but it's at least 7% - 8%.
It is the taxpayer's money, and it's expectd to be used.
If it's Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF, or welfare if you will) money, a lot of it comes from federal block grants. I'm not familiar with Illinois TANF policy, but according to my state, Oklahoma: "Federal money is provided by block grant funding in accordance with federal laws and regulations relating to the TANF program. These state and federal funds are used for assistance and administration under the plan."
IANAL or work in auditing, but the Governor could get his state into a lot of trouble spending money that was earmarked for that federal program, methinks. I'd hope that during their next federal audit (which happens every year here) they get to the bottom of it and punish just the people responsible, while not impacting the needy families with fines or cuts to the state's grant.
It was originally part of Teen Talk Barbie in 1992. From the Barbie Wiki (so you know it's true!)
In 1992 Mattel released Teen Talk Barbie, which spoke a number of phrases including "Will we ever have enough clothes?", "I love shopping!", and "Wanna have a pizza party?" Each doll was programmed to say four out of 270 possible phrases, so that no two dolls were likely to be the same. One of these 270 phrases was "Math class is tough!"
None of the major computer sellers offer home use PCs with XP. It's Vista only for not only Dells, but also HP/Compaq, Sony, Toshiba, etc. The only way to get XP is to go with a used, refurbished, or off lease machine, or like another person said, go to the business machine section.
Agreed. We bought the FLCL soundtrack just for them. Another band I enjoy is Asian Kung-Fu Generation. I found them via Rewrite, the theme song on the later episodes of Full Metal Alchemist.
I had to do some digging, but I believe it was with CryoBanks International. I called the toll free number, and was sent a questionaire asking about both of the baby's family health histories. Once I sent it back, I received a packet to bring for collection at the hospital. They even sent a courier to pick it up after the doctor collected it.
I just wish more places were available for donation. Hell, I'd take just one place in my state.
When I was pregnant with my daughter, I knew from the start I wanted to donate the umbilical stem cells. It wasn't an easy search to find somewhere that would take them. All the advertising toward pregnant women are for banking the stem cells. They scare parents into thinking their child's stem cells could be used for a cure on the chance the child develops a disease. I think this is a horrible practice to do on parents, most of whom probably are just throwing their money away in the belief it could save their child.
None of the hospitals in my state accept cord blood donations, nor are their any cord or blood banks here. I found only one cord bank that accepts donations from out of state (their name escapes me), and at no charge to my doctor, the hospital, or me. From what I've read, I know that the cord blood stem cells aren't able to be used like embryonic stem cells, but since they were just going to be destroyed anyway, why not donate them?
No, not all Christians believe in the rapture, but that's what the Left Behind series is about. Hence my statement about those who play this game and read the series believe in what they are playing on screen.
Although those who 'snap and kill people', don't need to play GTA, watch a violent movie, read a comic, listen to heavy metal, play D&D, [insert society blame here] to do it. I'd argue than most of the people who committ the crimes you mentioned haven't played GTA.
And like I said earlier, I actually agree that Wal-Mart has a right to sell it. I'll just use my right not to buy it, just like you. I surely don't want to be responsible for making everyone have good manners, etc. I've already got one kid, taking care of her is enough, thanks!

The Digital Archive Project is still going strong.
People have died from using it! (That's my favorite part...died I tell you!!!)
Should have read the comments better before hitting submit.
Just breaking Looking for link to roll call now.

I'm happy I am one of the 300!
for gender or age. How can the same weight be ideal for an 18 year old guy and a 45 year old woman, just because they are the same height?

about women from? Soap operas and crappy reality TV shows?

she voted to renew the PATRIOT Act not one year ago.
Now everyone knows Oregon is Idaho's Portugal!

Yes, but I'm not using it as an argument to ban it. Just making an observational comment.
