You're right! I will consider myself educated with your thanks. Reading through the rest of the article did provide me with a few chuckles by way of all of the spelling errors throughout. I love how you can tell when someone used spellchecker but they still aren't that great of a writer. Everything is spelled fine, but words are used horribly wrong in a few places in the article. I love it!

Seems you can get these babies at a lot of game shops, practically anywhere on the internet, and probably Radio Shack, which is where I got my adapter to turn a PSOne/PS2 controller into a USB game pad.

Maybe not solid blue per-se, but I'm getting pretty damn sick of being generalized as a stupid hillbilly because the number one industry in my state is agriculture. Guess the parent's comment struck a nerve with me.

IIRC, our vehicle only made it five miles or so last year, but this year they've improved the tracking technology to a high degree. At test runs in March, they were able to run a MTVR through a 20 foot wide test course with various obstacles a number of times with only one error of six inches. I tried to get on the DARPA Grand Challenge team this year, but I was too late. I'm going to try again next year though!

I too think this is a fantastic idea. I moved a few years ago from a large Midwestern city to a relatively small town in Wisconsin. The job market in rural areas of the country is very poor. Those lucky enough to have jobs these days are counting their blessings. I think it's great if a company is going to move into a tiny community and bring jobs to those who need them right here in the USA.

Then I'm presented with a list of thousands of useful and excellent programs that I can install. I can even point it at SuSE's mirror in nearby Madison and get even more great software, fast as hell. I've noticed that Windows hasn't changed their bundled software offering much between Windows 98 and XP, and the software that is bundled is just plain useless. Every piece of Microsoft software on my Windows machine has been replaced by a better, free alternative.

I've never used Debian personally, but there are thousands of Debian users out there who swear by apt. Seems easy enough "apt get name-of-your-software" and it's done. Let's see Windows do that.

I said the PS2 hardware was aging. As I write this I'm in the middle of a heated dogfight in the gorgeous game Ace Combat 04 from 2001. I still play a great many of my old PS1 games on a regular basis too. I'm not saying the PS2 isn't a valid piece of machinery with plenty of punch left in it. What I'm saying is that I, like many other consumers, are ready for a little more, and the PS3 and 360 promise to deliver that. I plan on keeping my PS2 (even if PS3 is backwards compatible, I can't remember offhand if it's supposed to be or not) and expanding my library. Some of my favorite PS2 games are titles that came out shortly after launch. Hell, I never give up on a good game. I played Metroid earlier today too!

Somehow I don't think HD-DVD will be limited to movies. If Microsoft decides to use this as a format for deploying their games, they will gain an edge over Nintendo at least, and Sony if they decide not to take the same route. All that data, however, will be limited by Xbox 360's lackluster hardware specs, so it remains to be seen yet what exactly they will do with HD-DVD (other than movies).

Dreamcast was not a Sony product, that was Sega right there, and it ended up being the death of them as a hardware company. They are all software now, and doing much better in that arena than they did with their ever-failing hardware lineup.

  13. Xbox 360 Flop? on Sony May Delay PS3 Until 2007 · · Score: 3, Insightful

IF the 360 flops? Of course the 360 launch is going to flop. Let's not forget that Microsoft announced that 360s will ship with standard DVD drives and the HD-DVDs will be coming later (next year most likely). I was going to go out and get a 360 at launch, but now I'm going to wait for HD-DVD, as I suspect many other people are. A bad move on Microsoft's part is going to end up giving Sony the opportunity to delay their console without losing much market share. I do think, however, that the aging PS2 hardware is nearing the end of it's lifecycle. Consumers are ready for something new, and as far as I'm concerned, the PSP is a niche market.

You can kill all the services in Windows and all you're left with is a cruddy GUI that doesn't do much. Same as with Linux. You can't kill the GUI and keep the services in Windows, you can do it in Linux and still have a useful machine in front of you.

  16. Another thing to consider... on Retailers Press For Unified HD DVD Format · · Score: 1

Here's what strikes me in this whole fiasco: TVs generally last a long long time. I realize nowadays we have become accustomed to "throwaway electronics" such as DVD players, VCRs, cellphones, etc. But TVs are generally not considered such. Hell, the 19 inch set in my bedroom was bought by my parents on the day I was born now more than 23 years ago, and it still works great with my now 18 year old Nintendo system. A good TV set can outlast a new car, and therefore many many people (myself included) aren't keen on jumping all over a new standard that requires us to invest in yet another new TV only a few short years later. The only way I'm going to upgrade to another new HDTV standard so shortly after the current one is if a standard becomes established and popular, and the equipment comes down to a friendly consumer price point. My estimate: 5 years. I mean I just bought my HDTV in March and I'm not planning on another new TV purchase anytime soon. New standards be damned, I won't help line the pockets of movie studios that seek to undermine my rights as a consumer by buying a new TV, a new player, and all my favorite movies all over again that I have spent 5 years working on buying on the current DVD standard. It took me long enough to ditch VHS for good, and a great many people still have not. The industry needs to slow down before they realize that they have left more consumers behind than they can afford to.

Most obvious comment ever has been taken. On November 12, 2001 (61 days after the WTC attack in NYC) American Airlines flight 587 took off from JFK and promptly crashed into a Queens neighborhood. "This is not a very good time for something like this to happen."

So my question is this: when is a good time for an airplane full of people to crash into a residential neighborhood? This guy should designate a day for us so we can make sure all the airlines and pilots know when the good day for crashing is. Morons.
