  1. the reason for AMD combining cores on Reverse Multithreading CPUs · · Score: 1

AMD is planning to increase the number of cores on a single chip. I would expect to see hundreds of cores on a single chip a decade from now. The question becomes, how best to allocate cores to different processes. Should each thread just one core? Should the cores run at different speeds and some threads get faster cores than other cores?

From a design standpoint, it is better to run every core at the same speed. It makes design much simpler because every core is the same. The problem then becomes what to do with a thread that needs a faster core. It would be very nice to be able to combine multiple slower running cores to form a virtually fast running core.

  2. more to the story.. on Computer Jobs -- How to Resign Professionally? · · Score: 1

I thought this was an interesting tidbit from his blog..

Well. . . I finally did it, I put in my resignation officially with the company I work for yesterday evening. By 10:00 AM today, I am at home, nothing to do except write in my blog. Yup, after giving the customary, and somewhat professional (I honestly don't mind giving 3-4 weeks notice), I had my accounts disabled, and my permissions removed from the system today by the CIO. I understand my position, and I understand that there are possible bad things that I could do to the system, but if I'm courteous enough to give notice that I was resigning, why would you kill my account and permissions, without forewarning? I immediately went and spoke with the HR Personnel person, and I explained her my situation, and she said, well. . . go home, and collect your pay, you will get paid for the next 2 weeks of work that you are missing. I was more than professional with them, and I was proper in giving them notice of my resignation, and how do they pay me back? They immediately take away any and all permissions, and accounts that I may have access to.

The HR person told me that this was a very unprofessional move on their part (the CIO's part), and that they don't condone that activity, she notified the corporate headquarters, told them the situation, and they agreed with her assessment, send him home, and send off his pay (continue paying me for as long as my notice was). The HR lady said it made them look bad as far as their corporate policy goes. I spoke with the co-worker that was responsible for disabling my account (he also is very close to the CIO) and he didn't see why I was so upset about the situation. I feel as though that is a terribly bad judgement call, and that it lacks a sense of professionalism. Anyways, as of right now, I'm unemployed. . .

  3. risk benefit on Computer Jobs -- How to Resign Professionally? · · Score: 1

Your manager has to weigh the risks and benefits. The risk is that you might steal trade secrets or try to sabotage the system since you have nothing to lose. While this is unlikely, if it did happen, it would cause your company huge problems.

The benefit of you working, is that you will do some work. However, management probably assummes your work won't be as high of quality as normal anyways.

Nothing is very unusual about what happened to you. I've heard of people being shown the door, immediately, and they aren't even allowed to pack up their belongings.

Today, many are scared of AI for scary but very unlikely reasons. They are scared of a Borg. They are scared that robots will take over the world. They are scared of being secretly controlled by an AI super race.

Much more likely is an AI super corporation. One company discovers AI. This AI is something like google's technology, but 100x stronger. This AI is used to develop even better AI. This companies market cap shoots through the roof as almost all patents and key innovations come from one company. .

  5. a new API for search on Google Base Launches · · Score: 2, Informative

Think of this as a different API for the search application. Google base often points to data outside of google. The only requirement is that everyone labels their data and gives the labels to google.

Going through cars, there are pull down menus to select the year, price range, etc.. Previously, you could either 1- go to google.com and hope you get lucky or 2- Go to every listing service and do searches of their databases

The main advantage is that this gives access to the deep web or the hidden web. It gives the google user the ability to search databases that were previously invisibile.

There is no way that some computer programmer is going to spend 90 days trying to crack each hard drive that comes through. That means each computer scientist could only look at 4 hard drives a year. That would cost a fortune!

I think they will detain somebody. Wait 89 days, send the hard drive to someone, and then look at the result.

  7. great online class... for free on Online vs. Traditional Degrees? · · Score: 1

There is a great class online by MIT for linear algebra. The amazing part is that it is free. Just do a google search on mit linear algebra lecture video.

Why aren't more lectures online for free? The basic core of lectures for math and computer science could be made for very little money. Once on the web, the best lectures would rise to the top. For example, for computer science, you could listen to a stanford professor explain binary trees and a MIT professor explain operating systems.

If any of you have good presentation skills, and a deep knowledge of a particular subject, I would encourage you to make a lecture and put it on the web. You could even host it for free on services like google video.

I finished a masters degree doing it partly online and the rest in person. In my opinion, you learn the same amount either way. You do the same homework and you listen to the same lectures. The only disadvantage is you miss out on the college experience. After taking a class online, you will realize how much you miss having classmates to complain and talk with.

  9. consider electrical engineering on Computer Science Curriculum in College · · Score: 1

If you are interested in software engineering, a degree in electrical engineering is a great option. Electrical engineering might seem very different from computer science, but it requires a very similar set of logical skills. I have worked with many software engineers who had degrees in electrical engineering.

In addition, once you have an electrical engineering degree, you have many options available. You can go into software engineering, embedded systems, IT, digital design, or traditional electrical engineering.

An electrical engineering degree, in my experience, will give you more job options than a computer science degree.

Someone will soon offer an operating system for free. Not Linux, but something like the Mac. Most likely, Google is going to release their own operating system. It won't have more features than Microsoft Windows. It will however, be more stable, and similiar to the Mac which is based on a UNIX core.

Since it is free, Google won't need to protect a monopoly unlike some other companies. That will encourage further innovation

I've used Windows, Solaris, and Linux. But if google made an os, I would switch to that pretty quickly.
