I'm excited about this and the prospect of more powerful low-heat CPUs. Soon there will be computers everywhere... oh wait. But really. There can be PCs everywhere.
I've long been an advocate of dynamic slashes. The slash should be fetched over the internet. There should be a default splash for no connection. Then the slash can change like the Google images for special happenings.
I supposed downloads beyond 100 Mbps don't matter as I have ZERO interest in moving to a gigabit-home network. That said. I would love to see ANY increase in upstream bandwidth.
It would help things like my home FTP server or such.
If they were going to do it, the thing to do would be a new Sputnik. A radio broadcast that HAMs could listen to (Adam saying "Myth Confirmed" over and over) and maybe a flashing light (I don't know how bright it would have to be) to be seen from earth.
I would think, with modern circuits and chips, that a radio emitting payload (only designed to stay aloft for minimal time) could be very small and thus much more launchable.
Hmm... upon considering the plausibility of this, I wonder exactly how hard it would be to calculate the orbit it would have (you don't want a low earth orbiting cannon ball taking out satellites). I'm sure you could get FAA (or whoever) approval and maybe even blessings.
Anyone recall the success of the haphazardly thrown together civil war rocket? It could be done. It should be done.
Go to the moon. Just do it. It would make for 5-10 days of the best reality TV ever. 1/2 the people wuold be hopinh you die, 1/2 the people would be hoping you make it.
Partner with Virgin Mobile (or whatever their rocket company is) get some big time sponsors.
I'm pretty sure they could make something in their shop that would launch Buster into sub-orbital space or beyond.
In fact, given funding, I know they could.
Yes it sort of stinks. But I don't care. I don't see Google ads. I just don't. It's some type of physio/psyco -logical effect. I'm POSITIVE I'm not the only one. I'm just so used to seeing the parts of the page that I want to, I just don't see the other parts.
It's true for me with all pages, including/. and CNN and other sites that I visit 5+ times a day. The pictures might distract me for a while, I'll tune those out soon enough.
Pop-up ads (remember those?) worked until I stopped getting them thanks to things like pop-up blockers and Firefox and anti-adware programs.
Intellitext, or whatever, I ca't ignore. It drives me nuts that when I leave the cursor in the middle of the page and scroll down with the scroll wheel, I hit them sometimes. Some sites are worse than other. If I notice them I instinctivly throw the cursor over to the far right (where there is a scroll bar and no text) and use my scroll wheel.
It's instinct. Just like cat's land on the feet, I ignore ads. Its one of many accrued computer instincts that I have, like typing. Or running from a DOD:S granade when I could toss it back.
Nonetheless, these ads will be no more effective on me. But if it gives Google more money ro devop fun things, I'm for it.
I was hoping for an ion drive for my spaceship before an ion bit in it's control system but we make due with what we have.
Having not read any of the linked papers, is there a binifit to this ion bit over a photon based bit?
Now I feel like a super-shab for having my "Google announces m.gmail.com gmail access from mobile devices" story rejected.

I can't help it. I never bought a Dell, but with a new job I didn't have time to build a rig so I bought an XPS 400.
Anyone with half a brain and some hardware knowledge knows you can't just remove Dell's included software. You just format the disk and install a new one from scratch. You are paying for an OS and hardwarem, but atleast in my case, I just wanted the hardware.
Nuke the OS and start from scratch, it's a wonderful thing.
Perhaps I'm not enough of a power user. I do multitask but ususally not hard core.
I don't need and (unless it was the norm) wouldn't use a 3d environment. I don't even make use of KDE's multi desktops.
I would like a wider screen. I know I can do dual screen or wide screen. I have. But I would like a great deal more desktop space.
I agree with perivious posts in that there needs to be dramatic input device movement. http://money.cnn.com/2005/12/15/commentary/game_ov er/column_gaming/index.htm?cnn=yes says that the Nintendo Revolution's new controler is actually intutive and pretty nice. Maybe someting alond those lines would work.
I'd certainly like to see neuron-induce input but for some reason I think that's far of. With all these multi core CPUs, we could devote one to speach (recognition and output) can't we?
I build KNO3 rockets for a while with a buddy in high school.
We molded them in 1.5" ID PVC pipe with one end cap. Post 9/11 we decided they looked too much like a pipe bomb we we stopped.
If smart and safe, KNO3 rockets can make for a really fun and nerdy hobby. It just go too sticky for me with the local fire department (while not fobidding me) frowned upon it.
Anyway, I made a small concrete slab for a launch pad. It cost me about $25 worth of quick-crete. It had a channel to vent exhaust away from our "control center" I thought it was snazzy.
Massachusetts isn't as close to the equator as I hoped, so we never attained orbit (actually we sayed below 1000 feet for FAA reasons). But it gave me the idea to "launch" my own reality TV show con-ing people into thinking they were astronauts... oh wait that was a different/. article.
What I was wondering (just yesterday actually) was how good home Wifi is.
I mean, I know (from wardriving) that few have any security enabled on their APs. I also know that even enabling it really doesn't do much other than hopefully make your neighbor look like a better target.
But for those with WEP enable. I wonder how often people change there key or ssid or anything that may help even a little.
Once I have a better warrig set up, I plan to map a small area (lots of APs near my house)then remap it in incriments (maybe weekly) and see what, if any, changes are made to existing APs.
If there was a viable option for a touchscreen to emulate a mouse. I would convery mt car PC to linux based.
I would LOVE to have a small distro load to RAM and run from there as I'm running a ~900 Mhz EPIA w/a 4200 RPM HDD and this would (or could and should) boost performance.
A dream becoming a bit closer to reality.
Oh, and it's nice for those Knoppix Kiosk lovers.
Assuming they really have discovered a way to lower power consumption (forgive me for not understanding semi-conductor principles) would it not be applicable to other semiconductors?
I immediately thought about cell phone/mp3 player battery life and other such things. Even so far as to think about laptops.
I (roughly) understand the not-so-much-wasted-power train of thought, and heat reduction from a CPU core and all, but wouldn't this have just as much effect on battery-powered devices?
Or am I just being an ass again?
If g00 doesn't fix the bug and something bad happens to enough (or enough loud) people, it looks really bad for them. Especially when they could (apparently easily) fix it.
maybe now we'll get a full-featured cell browser. I want lots of plugins built in.
I'm excited about this and the prospect of more powerful low-heat CPUs. Soon there will be computers everywhere... oh wait. But really. There can be PCs everywhere.
11: the number of days before the official Vista release that it will for some clever people to get RPC1 drivers working.

12.5 x 5 x 1 ???? Sold! Perfect for my carputer and other small-footprint applications.

I thought I read (on here) that Google was buying up dark fiber... isn't that counter intuitive to buying an AOL share?
Hmmm... could give new meaning to RED Hat... since they hate MS almost as much as Massachusetts.

There's no faster way to get around than to be /.ed
Um... I didn't RTFA or all the comments. what I have read is that is web-based and independent of handsets http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=28293
Of course but I would think it would be pretty easy to emulate a mouse. Thus no compatability issues.
What I was wondering (just yesterday actually) was how good home Wifi is.

You're looking at $250 to $500 for a 7" 16:9 LCD with USB touchscreen. That's not toooooo bad.

They did this to cover their own butts.
